Large colourful bedroom with 3 individual beds and private bathroom. The decoration is typical Guatemalan and the room overlooks our beautiful gardens and Lake Petén Itzá.

The space

Gucumatz Lakeside Inn is situated on the shore of beautiful Lake Petén Itzá just five kilometers from the small town of San José and seven hundred meters before reaching the village of San Pedro.
The Inn has beautiful tropical gardens, eight bedrooms for guests all with private bathrooms and terrace looking out onto the gardens and lake. All are decorated in colorful Guatemalan style.
There is a large sitting room with local literature and book exchange containing a superb collection of masks, handmade furniture and handicraft brought from all over the country. Adjoining this room is a games room with a table for eight people and a variety of table games. This room houses a small museum and is also suitable for meetings and/or classes.
We have an open-air bar with hammock, ping-pong and table football.

Guest access

The beach area has ample space for relaxing, reading and swimming. The water is clean, transparent and warm all year round. Kayaks are available free for the use of our guests.

Interaction with guests

We offer a typical Guatemalan breakfast from 7.30 to 9.30 for Q40 and dinner at 19.00 for Q100. We do not provide lunch but can recommend alternative restaurants in San José for those who remain here during the day.

Other things to note

Cookery classes are available in a local home for those of you who wish to try making tamales, refried black beans or the famous chicken broth and sharing the meal with the cook´s family (price Q70 plus ingredients).
Horse back riding and hiking are other activities we can organize for you.
Guests will have the perfect opportunity to take Spanish classes and put their existing knowledge into practice during their stay here.

Wow. The place was nicer than we ever imagined--at first we were a little daunted because it's a little out of the way, but it's so worth it and getting there wasn't difficult. It's like being in your own little escape, and would recommend setting aside some time just to enjoy the place. The lake is as beautiful as the pictures show and great to swim in and we had an amazing time just relaxing by the water. Can't say enough good things about it!

I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Moya went above and beyond to accommodate us and made sure all our needs were catered for. From lending us cash when we'd run out to preparing us a packed breakfast for our early departure to Tikal - nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent and we never went hungry. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Moya's place is absolutely beautiful (better than the pictures)! My family and I stayed here for only one night, but we all wish our stay could have been longer. From booking this place, Moya was in constant communication and was a great host! I will say it was quite a trip to get there, so I was really glad we had rented an SUV. If you are thinking about staying here, book now! Again, taking the bus seems reasonable, but if you are renting a car make sure it can handle a dirt road :)

Very nice place on the lakeside, very clean and owner Moya is really nice and helpful person. Its very calm here and sometimes during night, you can hear monkeys from the jungle. Lake is much warmer than Carribean sea and you can swim on private molo. Also you can buy here tasty dinner (100 Q) and breakfast (40 Q), prepared with love with moya. Worth of price. We booked just three days, but finally we've spent there a week, because of the atmosphere and calm there. Around here are few small villages, where you can see real Guatemalan life and fell 100% safe. Bus from Flores/Santa Elena is stopping just right in front of the doors to hotel. We did really enjoy that ! Heartly recommend ❤️ !!!

Wow! What a truly special place in this world. What can I say other than I wish my partner and I could have stayed much longer. Moya was a superb host, her kindness and hospitality go above and beyond from preparing us delicious meals to helping us get around with public transport. We spent an entire day by the lake going for kayaks, swims and reading our books that was capped off by a beautiful sunset. The other we visited Tikal ruinas and Isla de Flores with the help of Moya. We even enjoyed an evening with Moya herself hearing of her work in the village, and of her life and travels, which was very special. Our only advice is for people arriving by bus to the main bus station. Don't be fooled by the bus and taxi drivers when you arrive, they appear to be working together, and will try to convince you that the buses to San Jose have finished for the day and will try and charge you 250q just to get there. These taxi drivers also don't give up much information about where "la tranca" is, acting as though it doesn't exist. Just stick to your guns, head outside and catch a tuk-tuk to "la tranca". Once there look for the big blue bus and if it isn't there just jump in any mini van to San Jose. From there you can get a tuk-tuk directly to Moyas. We paid a total of 33q each for the tuk-tuk to la tranca, the minivan to San Jose and the tuk-tuk to Moyas, which certainly beats the 250 that the taxi drivers were trying to get us to pay at the bus terminal where we arrived. We hope that you enjoy your time there just as much as we did! Love Erin and Grant :)

I´m a retired teacher. British by birth, Spanish by nationality where I spent 34 wonderful years of my life. Now I live quietly by a beautiful lake in northern Guatemala trying to lend a hand in the near by village and share my beautiful home with whoever would like to come and visit me. I enjoy nature, reading, music and healthy outdoor life in general. I have an ecological garden and try to be as self-sufficient as possible. I´m a member of the Tikal Rotary Club, working towards a better Petén.
