This renovated basement studio under my lovely Victorian boasts comfort and privacy in vibrant North Oakland. It comfortably fits two, though there's room for up to 4 with the couch and a floor mattress, and it is located on a quiet block, close to freeways and public transportation.

The space

This studio basement apartment is renovated with a new, fully-equipped kitchen. It has a private entrance and is comfortable and cozy.

Guest access

Guests have access to the side and back yards, and have free wifi. The apartment is under the main house, and guests do not have access to the main house.

Interaction with guests

My partner Dane and I live right upstairs with our three teenage daughters, two dogs, and a cat. While I prefer not to intrude and mostly leave guests to themselves, we are always available to answer any questions or concerns that may arise during your stay. We are happy to offer recommendations!

Other things to note

1) The entrance to the apartment is funky-- you need to go through a dim, LOW ENTRYWAY (duck!) and then into the basement. Once you are in the apartment, you will be dazzled by the comfort and cheer!

2) This is an old house, and we are right above you. Noise carries in old houses! You will definitely hear our footsteps and pawsteps. You may hear our daughter singing show tunes.

3) Our big friendly dog loves people. Our little one can be more skittish and might bark but warms up quickly. You may meet them in the back yard when you enter and leave. Our pets are not allowed in your apartment, but if you are highly allergic, it's probably not the best fit.

4) The apartment is not child-proofed, but there aren't a lot of dangers and kids are welcome. I can provide comfy folding futon-type mats and bedding for up to two extra people.

5) If you are booking the apartment for someone else, please share the link to this listing with them so they can see it and understand the rules. For instance, you may like dogs but your parents may not. Remember that if your friend smokes in the apartment or breaks other rules, I will be writing about that in your review if you booked the apartment on their behalf.

I really enjoyed my stay at Tawnya's, it was my first time visiting California and having a great place to stay which was within walking distance to most amenities and public transit. The apartment was clean and spacious and Tawnya was very accommodating. Would definitely stay here again!

Really nice appartment in Santa Rosa. Clean. Quiet. Close to downtown (10 minute walk). We are absolutly satisfied!

The apartment was just like the photos. It was a little cold at night but there was a heat lamp that helped. Tawnya was a great host as she had milk and granola, umbrellas in case it rained and she even greeted us at the door when we arrived an hour later than anticipated as the plane was delayed. We were warned beforehand that there were some muggings in the area and to be honest I didn't feel entirely safe. The location was very close to the highway and bridge into San Fran. Luckily we had a car and we were able to drive around to many places.

Very close to some great food and shopping in Oakland. If you want to go into San Fran the train is within walking distance. Place is clean and there are all the supplies you need. Overall a good find!

Perfectly nice place to stay. It isn't in the best neighborhood but the place itself is nice. In fact, when I was driving to the house I was like: 'uh oh' and then I saw the house and I was like: 'Cute!' But then I got past the garden and started going into the basement and I was like 'uh oh' but then I got inside and I was like 'Cute!' Sort of a poorly worded way to describe my experience but it's true to form. Check in was super easy. Didn't matter what time I arrived -- all the information to get inside with zero interaction with the host was provided. Very simple and nice. Location is definitely a rough neighborhood but it was like 2 miles from one of the nicest and most glorious vegan meals (Millenium) that I've ever had. Easy enough to get into the city. Toll is $5. Lyft line is $10-$13. Seemed reasonable. Food and coffee that was provided was not great and it didn't *appear* that there was much in the way of cute coffee shops in the neighborhood but admittedly I didn't look hard.

Tawnya's place is fantastic! It really is the perfect place to stay if you're looking for a place near the bay. Their place is clean and extremely user-friendly with signs telling you where everything is and how to operate things such as the TV and heater. Lovely spot. Would stay here again

Tawnya is an excellent host. She does a great job of communicating all the details regarding checking in. As advertised, the room is tucked away underneath the main property and if you're not careful, you will hit your head (which was also clearly communicated). The room is also perfect for our needs: wifi is strong, room is clean and comfortable, the price is reasonable, and towels and other amenities were also provided. I would encourage others to give this room a visit.

A native of Oberlin, OH, I've lived in CA for the last 27 years. For the past sixteen I've made the North Oakland neighborhood of Longfellow my home, and I think it's a mighty special place. My boyfriend and I live with our three teenaged girls, two dogs, and one cat.
