Folan’s Cottage is a beautiful architecturally designed holiday home that was rebuilt in 2010 from two ruined stone cottages.

It is only a few meters from a wonderful quiet sandy beach, with views of the Twelve Bens and across the ocean to the Arann Islands. The setting is magical and remote with just rabbits, sheep and Connemara ponies as your neighbours.

This is the second time I've stayed here and it's still perfect! Amazing location and the house is as exactly as advertised. Definitely one of the most beautiful, serene places in Ireland.

Just what we were looking for! Remote, beautiful, and a bit wild. Close to great shopping and everything we needed. Gorgeous home, private beach, amazing views and even a pony to visit. Wonderful, friendly locals and great food at the nearby pubs and restaurants. Cozy evenings with the peat stove. This place is an absolute gem!

The property was exactly as described. The house is well appointed and has all modern conveniences in an incredible setting. No complaints Was al that we hoped for in a cottage by the sea for our family. No problem finding good dining and groceries in Clifden. Would happily recommend to others.

If you've ever fantasized about being on a rocky ocean coast and completely away from it all - but, with all the modern amenities and a short drive to the city - this is a dream come true. The house itself was spotless, is architecturally beautiful and it has everything - dishwasher, fireplace, heated floors, wifi, laundry, satellite TV...the list goes on. Our only real neighbours were the ponies that came by the house every morning and let us feed them carrots. The property is equally awesome. The house is just a few feet from an essentially private, huge beach. We went to bed every night with the sounds of crashing waves and a sky so full of stars you'd think you were in a planetarium - how can you beat that. It's only an hour and a half drive from Galway and about 20 minutes from Clifden which has a couple big grocery stores and lots of shops. Connemara might not be the most touristy part of Ireland but from our experience, it's definitely the most beautiful. Also thanks to Simon and Nora for their detailed guide on the area with lots of suggestions of things to do and see (and, surprisingly, there is a lot). If you're flipping through airbnb listings and thinking about this place, do it! Adam and Eva

What a treasure. Everything is exactly as pictured and we are thrilled to have had the time at the cottage. We enjoyed the access to the beach, the mountains, Kylemore Abbey, Killary harbor, the Aran Islands, and the coastal scenery of the Wild Atlantic Way. We ended up in Clifden frequently and I’d second Simon’s recommendation of Mitchell’s. The SuperValue grocery store there was the best around and I’d start there next time for food shopping. The weather was a bit rough at times, but that was to be expected. The sun graced us at least every other day. Worth every penny.

Simon's instructions that we received were excellent, and full of local knowledge and tips. Simon was really helpful and responsive when booking and promptly answered any of our questions. Folans Cottages are in the idyllic location of Dolans Beach on the rugged coastline of Connemara. The beach and scenery are spectacular, the sunrise over Errisbeg is well worth climbing out of the comfy beds for. The cottage is a modern renovation of two original stone cottages, joined together by a glass atrium which forms the staircase up to the second floor. The renovation brings modernity but remains sympathetic to the locals landscape and scenery. The house has three good sized bedrooms arranged over the two floors with two double beds, one downstairs and another bedroom upstairs which has two single beds. There are three bathrooms, two with bath/showers and one shower room. The water from the taps runs clear and is drinkable, not the usual brown bog water, that many familiar with Connemara, will know. For those who need to do some work while away, there's a desk/library area upstairs. The cottage is very well equipped, we found everything that we needed during our stay. The kitchen has everything for the keen chef/baker including a food blender and processor. The house has underfloor heating throughout as well as a stove fireplace; we found a good basketful of turf and firefighters on our arrival. The house is very cosy as a result. WIFI is available at the cottage with the best reception available in the living room. Mobile signal is limited at the house, but if you walk up to the gate, either toward the beach, or the road, you can get a 3G signal. Tips to other travellers to the area, climbing Errisbeg, the hill behind the cottage, near Roundstone offers amazing views of the Twelve Bens, Roundstone to Recess as well as Dogs Bay and Dolan. The route is a little unclear, as there are no worn paths indicating the way to go, we scrambled up the side in the safest and most direct route that we could find. Coming down, the easiest route we found faced west. My favourite bar in the area is at Ballynahinch Castle, where a warm welcome, huge open fires and a great pint of Guinness can be found. The ponies in the field adore carrots and apples. We found that the best local supermarket was in Ballyconeely and there's a small grocers shop in Roundstone, too. Clifden has the greatest choice in terms of shopping with Supervalue, Aldi and Lidl, as well as a small number of independents. We loved our stay at Folan's Cottage and we hope to return again next year.
