The Master Suite at Jim's Place is 1 flight above the smaller apartment listed as "Jim's Place-Garden Suite" on this same web site. The Master Suite has a full service kitchen, a large great room, a master bedroom [double] and guest bedroom [3/4], 1 bathroom with a unique indoor/outdoor shower [rain off the roof option], a utility/laundry room and a large veranda with a "million dollar view" looking south west to the Caribbean Sea. Elevation - 240 feet, a 10 minute walk to the local beach.

The space

The design of our villa is a unique, artist driven "rustic" space, but with many comforts for a relaxing experience. There is no A.C. nor any glass windows, as the building is designed with louvers throughout to take advantage of the fresh, cooling breezes off the sea. All beds have insect nets and using repellant after sunset is recommended. At 240 feet above sea level the south west view to the sea is spectacular over the well treed gardens. Solar hot water, WiFi and/or internet hook up, with a notebook computer [loaded with music and Netflix access] and flat screen available. A fresh water swimming pool is just two flights below with a bathroom cabana and second kitchen/bar on the pool deck.

Guest access

Renting the 2,000 square foot Master Suite gives you full assess to the entire property - the pool, gardens and hammock gazebo. There is a separate, self-contained "Garden Suite" on the lower level which may or may not be occupied. It is listed on this same site and comfortably accommodates two. We also list Jim's Place-Rustic Cottage on the pool deck level which accommodates one [two in a pinch - twin bed]. These other two accommodations can be booked separately or along with the Master Suite to accommodate 6 in comfort [2 doubles and 2 singles].

Interaction with guests

We have a resident caretaker who has his own cottage down by the main gate. He is available to answer any questions ["where", "how", "what"] and is an excellent guide to the local district. He will gladly do your daily shopping for you, with you or show you around the district. He has been with us for 20 years - from day 1. I am always available on the internet or by phone when not on the island.

Other things to note

Bring hats! The sun can be hot if you venture out, but you'll find plenty of shade and cooling sea breezes "at home". We also suggest you bring pool/beach towels. All beds have insect screens but we recommend repellent, especially in the evenings during summers/spring rain season. We do keep a small supply handy and it is easily available locally. Even the local gas station sells it, along with beer, wine and rum. There is an ATM there as well.

We were looking for something a bit more relaxed and low key when we decided on heading back to Jamaica for our 4th trip. This is EXACTLY what we got with the Master Suite at Jim's Place!!! Do not book this place if you’re looking for AC, high end finishing’s or a location that’s deathly quiet. This oasis has so many beautiful trees and plants on its property; it’s crawling (literally) with geckos, insects and all the other little creatures that live in the jungle… and they each make their own unique noises! (Navalee shared an old wives tail with us; when the geckos are more vocal in the evening, it means that there will be rain the next day … those little guys were spot on each time!!!!!) Our first night, we had a cockroach welcome us in the kitchen (thank god, Jim warned me about their potential presence) and only saw one other one during our 9 day stay. Jim did also warn us about the mosquitos; now first let me tell you a little about our Alberta mosquitos … they don’t bother us, we rarely get bites … so when Jim suggested bringing bug spray and told us about the mosquito nets, I half sluffed it off – we’re “Alberta Strong”!! lol BRING MOSQUITO SPRAY!!!! We spent SO MUCH time on the veranda (and how could you not), watching the stars and listening to the fauna till late into the night when the bugs are at their worse … rarely ever did we feel or see any mosquitos, but the constant itching in the morning and 100’s of marks on our bodies confirmed Jim’s warning. After the first two nights, we perfected tucking in the mosquito netting and spraying down to reduce the bites. When we actually used the spray, we had very few bites!!! Again, bring and USE the spray!!! Jim’s Place is beautifully set up and has almost everything you could ever need available in the suite for you. We ended up leaving a few little things there for future guests (mini blow dryer, small blender, extra bug spray/sunscreen, etc.) as we always feel that we should leave the space with more than when we arrived. The property is wonderfully kept by Oney; he made sure to clean the pool and sweep all walkways before we’d even get up each day. Make sure to grab a red stripe and have a sit down with the ol’ boy, he’s been around and has some wonderful stories to share! Take Jim’s advice and have Navalee come cook for you!!!!! She made the most incredible lobster dinner with fresh produce from her garden … you can’t get this experience just anywhere!!! We were lucky enough to have her join us for dinner and it was absolutely heartwarming to hear the stories she shared with us about her family and some of the traditions we all share. It really made us feel like we were at home having dinner...

Good place for a couple of days. We were there for two weeks. Not great for such a long stay. Beautiful view and lovely, open living space. Wi-fi is as you would expect - very slow. The pool is great for kids. Wonderful outdoor/indoor shower! Lots of towels and bedding. (Bring your own pillow!) Local beach is quiet but garbage-strewn. Navalee is terrific but it is a long walk for her and not safe for her to walk home after dark. Be prepared to hire a taxi for her or drive her yourself to and from Jim's Place. There are many mosquitos all night so nets must be used and repellent MUST be used (because Jim's mosquito nets have holes). There are no fans. Washing machine is unusual DaeWoo manual with spinner. Must be watched while in use. Works really well! Kitchen has very poor lighting and is not well-equipped except for a fabulous 6-burner gas stove! French press coffee makers, toaster oven and milkshake machine(?). Quirky.

Response from Jim:
Anna Barron and her 4 family members were great guests with many positive suggestions to help us improve our hosting performance and comfort for our visitors. Being in the tropics, there is little we can do about the mosquitos when in season, but the bed nets were new in January. We'll have them looked at for any repairs needed. It's is clear that we are not the Holiday Inn, nor an "all-inclusive" beach resort providing entertainment. We have to make our own fun and accept the real Jamaican experience, a little rustic and off the beaten tourist track. Welcome to Jim's Place!

The house is just amazing like the people which live around it. There are many beautiful spots on the property, so it's a place to enjoy the vacation to the fullest. You can enjoy the ocean view from the balcony, take a swim in the pool or relax in the hammock. If the evening arrives it's getting really loud around it because it is located in a rural area. The ocean view is worth the struggles during the night with the insects, which make a lot of noise. The wifi isn't working that well. All together it's definitely a place to visit.

Response from Jim:
Guest feedback is the best way to find ideas to improve BOTH parties' experience. Can't fix the insect noise - the WiFi works best upstairs or up back in the garden. "Do come back." We have other WiFi options - plug and play n pay. when I am there. best regards, JP

Jim's place was perfect! The view from the balcony was beautiful, and the rooms were great. My two friends and I stayed here for 3 nights as the first part of our trip to Jamaica. We walked to the beach one day, and to the market another. The driver that picked us up from the airport was very kind and helpful. The caretaker who lives on-site is also very kind. He took good care of us while we were there. The structure of the home is gorgeous, and we all loved the big doors that lead out to the balcony as well as the outdoor shower. Jim was very communicative both before and during our stay, and I would highly recommend the master suite if you're looking for a little bit of paradise.

A pleasure to host Natalie and her husband. Good note about repellant use in the evenings! We are in the tropics and it was spring.

I'm not even sure where to start with. My wife and I wanted a true, non touristy, experience in Jamaica and we found that in Jim's Place. From the initial communication with Jim, to the actual day of check-in, we couldn't have felt more engaged and welcomed. As for the house, we fell in love, immediately. It's like staying in a tree house for big people with a view of the Caribbean! We fell in love with the house cat, Big 2. Made a friend with the amazing on premise groundskeeper, Hepburn, learned to play dominoes on the the porch, had a true Jamaican meal prepared, in-home, by a true Jamaican. We will go again.

Jim's place was absolutely wonderful. The architecture is so unique and brilliantly built. It felt like we were staying in a jungle treehouse, with a lovely freshwater pool to cool off in after a day in the sun. The house features open, airy rooms with a large balcony that offers an incredible view of the Caribbean below. Highly recommend watching the sunset up there with a cocktail and friends! Hepburn, the caretaker of the property, is so friendly and helpful. He walked us down to the beach, and showed us some great spots to eat and get a drink in town as well. We had such a great experience, and can't wait to come back to this place!

I wish I'd written this on our AIRBNB web site 2 years ago. Mae [and her party of 7 worker/friends and] has a way of travelling to explore as much as just being there, that we here in Culloden/Whitehouse hope offer. The REAL Jamaica and complete privacy in a friendly district, slightly off the beaten tourist track. Thanks Mae.

I am a semi-retired designer/artist with a 45 year career in architecture, stage, film and television design. Designing and building "Jim's Place" in Jamaica was a labour of love... beginning in 1998 with an empty 1 acre hillside lot, 240 feet above sea level and a dream of creating an artists' retreat. We began hosting non-family guests in early 2014 and have enjoyed sharing our home away with folks from many countries. We can't be there as often as we like and are lucky to have found a special person [Hepburn] to act as host on our behalf.
