The “Captain's cottage” is a beautifully maintained, two bedroom 114-year-old miners cottage located in the awesome suburb of Islington. Within walking distance are a wide range of antique & boutique shops, cafes, bakeries, a hip barber shop, supermarkets and pubs. Down the end of the street is a park with shaded children’s play equipment and a cycle path that weaves its way along Throsby creek past the fish market all the way into the foreshore and beaches.

The space

The cottage has 2 large bedrooms and a comfortable living room with aircon & two lounges. The kitchen is small but well equipped with gas stovetop and oven, a microwave and fridge. There is a tidy indoor bathroom with shower but if you prefer to bathe al fresco there is a vintage claw foot bath on the back verandah connected to the mains water and perfect for enjoying the sunset or watching the moon rise surrounded by vines and treetops.
The house has been simply and thoughtfully decorated with new and vintage wares. There is one queen bed and one double bed, both are very comfortable and have quality linen, duvets and pillows. If you find yourself wanting something to do there are books and games and we are close by if you need suggestions on what to do in and around Newcastle.

Guest access

You are welcome to use all parts of the house and garden. There is no off-street parking so it’s best to leave your car on George Street which is just around the corner.

It was a beautiful house and easy walking distance to shops and train station. The experience was a good one. Our 18month old loved the toys.

Nairn's house is just as seen in the pictures - a comfortable, creative space. We (two adults, two kids) fitted in comfortably and the girls enjoyed the outside bath. The location was a short walk to cafes and restaurants and we made the most of the bikes and cycled our way around all of the beaches. Who would have though Newcastle was so full of hipsters?
