A short 10 minute voyage on our private ferry (we'll send you a guest pass) brings you to our Beachfront Cabin and Annex that are available either individually or together. You'll be perched on the western shore of Herron Island, a tiny private island in south Puget Sound, about 90 minutes from Seattle. Enjoy the view, deer, seals, porpoises, eagles, whales and all the beauty the Puget Sound has to offer. Kayak, paddle board, beach comb and view some of the most amazing sunsets you'll ever see.

The space

Our beachfront property features 2 individual buildings, The Cabin and The Annex that are available either separately or together. We can accommodate parties of 1 to 8 guests.

The Beachfront Cabin sleeps up to 4 guests. Parties of 6 to 8 guests can add the Annex for an additional $30 per person, per night (2 guest minimum). The Annex is in a separate building, just across the yard.

In the Beachfront Cabin you'll find a queen size bed in the downstairs open bedroom and 2 single beds in the upstairs open loft. (The loft is accessible by ladder, please watch young children). The Cabin has a bathroom with shower, washer/dryer, TV/DVD and a fully equipped kitchen plus an electric outdoor grill (you'll probably do your main cooking at the Cabin).

If you add the Annex you'll find a queen size bed in the upstairs bedroom and a sleeper sofa downstairs. The Annex has it's own bathroom with shower, washer/dryer, TV/DVD and a fully equipped kitchenette. The kitchenette has refrigerator, induction hotplate and large microwave (no stove) ideal for smaller meals.

The Cabin and Annex combination are an excellent option for larger groups who want to be together yet still enjoy the privacy of separate buildings.

From the back deck of the Cabin you can enjoy your meals outside or just take in the unobstructed ocean, island and mountain view. The sunsets are spectacular all year long. Watch for our resident deer, heron, seal, porpoise and eagles. There’s a good chance you’ll spot Orca or Gray Whales. We’ve been seeing a lot of them lately. Our location on the west shore is one of the best whale sighting spots on the island. Picture your group sitting around the outdoor fire pit, scanning the the water for Orcas and watching the changing colors of the sky as the sun sets behind the Olympic mountains.
If you prefer to stay inside you can still enjoy the amazing view or watch a movie on our comfy couch in front of our cozy wood burning stove.

With no stores or restaurants on the island you can enjoy a level of peace that is hard to match anywhere else. There are neighbors' vacation homes on either side of the cabin but you'll have ample privacy anywhere on the property.

Guest access

A short walk down the stairs (46 to be exact) brings you to your own private beach, one of the nicest on the island. You’ll find 2 kayaks, 2 stand up paddle boards, a rowboat and crab pots at at your disposal at no additional charge. On the back porch you'll find a couple nice chaise lounges, Adirondack chairs and a Weber electric grill (works great and you never have to worry about running out of fuel).
The water in Case Inlet is exceptionally calm. An early morning paddle is a fantastic way to start your day. The water is fairly warm in the summer and excellent for swimming and floating. The calm waters make for some of the best water skiing, tubing and boarding you’ll find anywhere.

Interaction with guests

You will have the cabin, grounds and beach all to yourselves. Our hostess, who lives on the island, will stop by shortly after you arrive to make sure you get in OK. She'll be available most of the time by phone if you have questions while you’re on the island.

Other things to note

We supply all towels, linen, soap and paper products. Tap water is fine for drinking. Kitchen is fully equipped. There is a house manual with complete information in the house.

You are welcome to use our kayaks and paddle boards. We have plenty of life jackets in a wide array of sizes. If you have kids under 6 years you'll need to bring your own. There is no lifeguard on the beach.

Cell/internet service is sporadic on the island but generally pretty good in the vicinity of our cabin.

Donn's place is exactly as described :) Clean scenic (waterfront) and quiet. The perfect weekend getaway. We did not see orcas but enjoyed everything else...!! Ferry schedule can affect your checkin checkout times- we had some cancellations because of low tide and checked out a few hrs earlier (Donn gave us a heads up well in advance about ferry cancellations) Overall a great property and will definitely recommend the property to others .....

We had a great stay. The sunsets were amazing. There was much less boat traffic than I anticipated. We really enjoyed kayaking and paddle boarding, especially in the mornings when the water was placid. The residents are all friendly, and we didn't get any "looks" when walking along the beach in front of their properties (only waves and smiles). The crabbing was nice in front of the property, but it's mostly red rock crab.

This was one of the most beautiful and relaxing places I've ever been. The cabin and the scenery are even better than the pictures... And the deer will eat out of your hand. Amazing.

We came to Donn's place for our honeymoon as we were looking for a quiet getaway with beautiful scenery. This place did not disappoint! We loved staying here and would come back in the future. Below are some things we liked, suggestions for the future, and things that surprised us. Likes • Deck and THE VIEW! - Unbeatable and we had fantastic weather. • Nice deck chairs - we loved to seat in them and read or eat lunch • Bed comfortable and nice pillows • Couch is nice • TV works great • Really peaceful and quiet • Nice walk around the island. Took a little less than 2 hours and we took our time • Ferry was easy. Nice staff. Make sure you're early. Check the schedule. • Owner and host. Really easy to work with. The host picked us up a citronella candle from the store. The shower wasn't working in the front cabin, so we had to use the shower in the cabin a few yards away, but they reimbursed us partially for the inconvenience no questions asked. • Wildlife. We saw deer, bald eagles, seal, otters, and starfish. No orca siting but we heard they show up Suggestions: • Pots and pans in bad shape. • Bigger pasta pot • Missing measuring cups • Screen door needs repairing • Electric candles are broken • Supply citronella candles • Tea strainer • New wine bottle opener • Print out tide schedule • Say Bluray/DVD on the listing so people with blu rays can bring them • Post a photo of the supplied movies and tv shows • Bring your own binoculars if you really want to bird watch and check out he seals and otters, the ones provided aren't very good Surprises • Stove fan is very loud and turns on automatically with large burner • Smoke alarm is very sensitive. Used the toaster and it went off • Minimal storage for food items • Minimal storage for clothing. No closet and one drawer in the dresser • Layout. Walk in the front door and the queen bed is directly to your right with the bathroom next to it. Then directly to your left is the sofa. Feels more like a studio with a loft. • A lot of jelly fish in the water so we didn't feel comfortable swimming. • Washer and Dryer. The dryer takes a long time (3-4 hours) Thanks again Donn and Sharon for a wonderful start to our marriage!

Response from Donn:
Jeff, I'm really glad you had such a great time. Thanks for spending your honeymoon with us on Herron Island. Our hostess Sharon said you and your wife were the sweetest couple! Thanks for bringing these items to our attention. We can't address them unless guests like you point them out and we definitely listen. We've already replaced the all the pots and pans with brand new, upgraded/added new kitchen gadgets and repaired the screen door (apparently the guest right before you broke it). We'll move the large 3 drawer dresser in the loft down to the main floor to make it more accessible. Printed tide tables and better binoculars are a great idea. I'm so sorry if the layout surprised you. We do describe the bedroom as an "open bedroom" in the listing. I'll try to find a photo angle that shows the proximity of the bedroom, entry and bathroom and update as soon as our current guests check out. I'll have to wait for a change over day since we are booked solid everyday this summer. Thanks again for your very valuable input. We would love for you to visit us again soon. Let us know if you'll need our baby crib by then ;-). Sincerely, Donn and Betty

It is as he says it is. No surprises. Very quiet, serene, and beautiful. Looking out over the water each day, watching glorious sunsets with great colors over the Olympic Mountains, enjoying the wildlife in the water, on the sand, and in the sky, and yes, even spotting a whale in the water below the cabin; all of it just lovely. The kitchen has appropriate cooking utensils, pots, and pans, plenty of dish towels and cleaning supplies. Coffee filters are on hand for both coffee pots (one in cabin, one in annex), and even a french press should you want a single cup. Kayaks were as stated and easy to use off the beach. Islanders friendly, and meeting, greeting, and feeding the deer was incredible. For anyone looking for a quiet, secluded getaway, with opportunities to kayak, walk around the island, explore the beach for shells, crabs, and driftwood, and enjoying the magnificent view of water, sky, and mountains while you hear waves lapping at the shore below you, great place indeed. Our hosts had someone meet us at the cabin who explained the basics, showed us what we needed, and offered to assist if there were any problems. She, Sharon, lives on the island, can also give you a brief overview of the history of the island. I understand why people come here. Once you go, you know. As an island you don't have a lot of traffic, and there are only so many people who can inhabit the place at one time. Tip: plan out your meals well as there is no grocery story or restaurant; and buy plenty of extra apples as the deer love them.

My husband and I live near downtown Seattle and we wanted to get away from the city for a couple days to be closer to nature. Donn's place on Herron Island was exactly what we were looking for: not too far from the city, but remote enough. The cabin was cozy and had a beautiful waterfront view. It also was well-stocked with firewood, such that we were able to make use of the outdoor firepit and indoor fireplace. One of the days it rained, but we were still able to sit out on the partially covered deck and enjoy the outdoors. Donn actually has two places on Herron Island; and there was a little mixup as we were given directions to his other place. Yet, Donn responded quickly to the mixup and even the caretaker of his properties came by with a complimentary bottle of wine. It actually worked out well for us as we got to see what his other place was like, which just as pleasant. Another thing we appreciated about our stay was when Donn called us to inform us of orca sightings; we didn't see any, but it was nice of Donn just the same. My husband and I very much enjoyed our stay and hope to come back when it's warmer and go kayaking, crabbing, and paddle boarding (for which equipment is provided on-site).

Donn's place was amazing! The perfect getaway from the din of the city to a Secret Island. Both the cabin and annex were very comfortable, clean and cozy. The scenery through the big windows that you wake up to is one that that can only be best experienced in person and futilely described in words. The private beach access, the boat and kayaks, the harbor seal (maybe sea lion) and the deer which walked up to our cabin all made for a very entranced, enchanted and magical experience. Donn was a great host, very communicative and methodically with detailed instructions which ensured that our trip was a comfortable and seamlessly pleasurable experience. The extended patio (deck) has only been recently added and we couldn't be more happier with it. Needless to say that this place is highly recommended and I would certainly be visiting again.

My wife and I have lived in the Pacific Northwest most of our lives and raised our kids here as well. My wife loves to cook, is an avid reader, professional communicator and political "junky". I'm a musician and can bore you to tears rambling on about the completely irrelevant intricacies of my favorite music. We have loved traveling the world but find that as in The Wizard of Oz, there is truly no place like home! We discovered Herron Island in southern Puget Sound about 3 years ago and immediately fell in love with it. We were both amazed that such a beautiful place could exist so close to us without ever even knowing it was in our own backyard. We enjoy sharing our "secret" island with others. We have 2 homes there. We have a friend living there full time who is available to check in with you and assist with troubleshooting if needed.
We hope you will love Herron Island as much as we do- ENJOY!
