With exceptional views across the South Downs, RIBA award-winning Jack Windmill brings together a converted 19th-century mill house and granary, with a new house completed in 2016 by architects Featherstone Young. Extensive grounds with walled garden, pizza oven, fruit orchard and rope swings. Glamorous entertaining spaces, including a triple height granary space with grand piano, and 7 bedrooms. Perfect for a family gathering or corporate awayday. Also available for photoshoots and filming.

The space

With exceptional views across the South Downs, this RIBA-award winning property brings together a converted 19th-century mill house and granary, with a new house completed in 2016 by Featherstone Young.

The original Grade-II listed windmill was built in 1866 as one of a pair, known locally as ‘Jack’ and ‘Jill’. The main house, completed in 2016, sits between the two mills and is based on the original dwelling built on the site for Henry Longhurst in the 1960s. The architect's design has reimagined and modernised the original property, adding a punched aluminium facade in a seed-scatter pattern in reference to the agricultural past of the site.

The house uses the traditional black-and-white vernacular of Sussex mills, whilst the converted granary has preserved the original timber of the structure in a modern triple-height space with floor-to-ceiling glass.

There are a total of seven bedrooms across the main house and the granary, sleeping up to 17 guests.

The main house has two double bedrooms (one super-king-size, one king-size), two bedrooms each sleeping four in bunk-beds, and a downstairs single bedroom. There are two family bathrooms, one with a bath and hand-held shower, the other with a shower and double sinks. The main house also has a large kitchen-dining-lounge space with wood-burning stove, and a top-floor bar/lounge with exceptional views.

The granary has two charming double bedrooms which share a wet-room bathroom. The granary also includes an enormous entertaining area with a grand piano, and a lounge area with wood-burning stove.

The 1.5 acre garden includes a flint-walled outdoor dining area and wood-burning pizza oven. There is parking for up to three cars on site, with unlimited further parking in the free public car park next to the nearby ‘Jill Windmill’.

Guest access

Guests will be able to use the Mill House, Granary and extensive gardens. There is currently no access to the interior of the windmill itself.

Interaction with guests

Jack Windmill is our home, and if at all possible, I will be on hand to welcome guests. When I am not available, a trusted local contact will be on hand to answer queries.

We had a wonderful family reunion at the house, with the stunning views and peacefulness being the highlight. The 4 children aged 7-11 spent all their time in the gardens ..there were so many places to hide and run about, then there was endless tree climbing and swinging on the rope swings too. The adults could sit and enjoy the views, and also lose each other in the property, which provided many areas for sitting around and relaxing...we especially enjoyed the fire pit area in the walled garden in the evenings as the days were warm but the fire was just perfect when the temperature dropped.

The views, the windmills, the gardens and the fantastic entertaining spaces make this a very special place to spend a weekend. Everyone's jaw dropped on arrival! Everything about the house was to a very high standard, very clean and comfortable. The fully equipped kitchen was perfect for cooking for a group. There were trestle tables and tablecloths is storage which allowed us to comfortably sit down as a group for dinner each evening. Claire helped in every way she could before arrival and shared tips on the local area and facilities (and even kitchen supplies). On arrival, we were greeted by Simon from Jill Windmill next door, who took the time to show us around and to share lots of interesting history about the windmills and the house. It's worth mentioning that we did a really great walk (around 50 mins) around the back of the house, across the hills and down country roads to the family run Black Dog Hill Vineyard - where we spend the afternoon tasting sparkling wine in among the vines. Highly recommended! We all left Jack Windmill dying to get our next visit in the diary. We will certainly be back!

This is an amazing place to stay, truly breathtaking. Internally it is also well decorated, furnished, clean and really comfortable. We used this for a business trip but I could imagine it being an equally great venue for a family birthday get together. If you are looking for a place that is going to take your breath away and offer you a truly memorable break then I would definitely recommend this house.

Fantastic house with incredible views, right next to two windmills. Only 50 min by train away from London (10 min by taxi from hassocks train station), this beautiful house gives you and your family/friends the perfect getaway to spend some quality time together. Host communication without trouble and delay and will definitely come again!

A lovely, peaceful and beautiful space to relax and unwind in. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend here. Fascinating history with the Windmill and lovely spaces for the kids to play in while the adults can unwind by the open fire or in the truly stunning Granary space right next door. Very good and smooth communication with our host. Thank you!
