Crabadon Manor is a medieval Manor House full of old world charm and character. With plenty of space and beautiful surroundings for any time of the year, and being dog friendly it is the perfect getaway!

The Manor House has 5 Bedrooms and a 1-2 Bedroom Annex. It is situated in the South Hams, not far from Totnes and Dartmouth, Bantham and Bigbury Bay, Salcombe and other seaside spots, with lovely country views and a large garden.

The space
Crabadon Manor is a very characterful and ancient house dating to the Medieval period. It is full of charm and tucked away in a very secluded spot with gardens and trees and fields all around. It is the ideal place for outdoorsy people, especially families with children and dogs who like exploring and outdoor pursuits: country walks, swimming, horse-riding, sailing, canoeing, cycling, visits to some of the many lovely beaches, bird-watching etc. All very accessible. The South Hams really is an area of outstanding natural beauty! If you like, Crabadon is 'The Famous Five' (see GWR adverts!) meet 'Swallows & Amazons'.

The area is noted for water sports - only 6 miles from the Manor is Dittisham (see photos) one of the most beautiful inland sailing areas in Britain, and home to some celebrities. You can put a boat on a mooring there as a visitor, or you can take a dinghy or canoe and launch there. Downstream, round a bend in the River Dart, is Greenway House (NT) former home of Dame Agatha Christie (accessible by a foot passenger ferryboat from the Dittisham quay) and further on still is the Britannia Royal Naval College for officer training, and the picturesque harbour town of Dartmouth, with the Steam Railway terminal opposite at Kingswear.

If you have very energetic children aged between 6 and 16, there is Woodlands Adventure Park only 4 miles away, where there are numerous activities on hand, including a challenging assault course. Most kids love it.

The Manor House has 5 Bedrooms 2 x Double rooms, 1 with en-suite, 3 x twin rooms, 1 is an annexe to the Master bedroom suitable for children. There is a family bathroom upstairs and a shower room on the ground floor. There is a good sized Farmhouse kitchen and a dining room and a cozy sitting room, both with wood-burners.

The Annexe Cottage (Lillypond Cottage) sleeps 4 - 2 in a downstairs en-suite double bedroom and 2 on a put-u-up in the upstairs sitting room. This room also has its own bathroom. The annexe also has its own kitchen with appliances.

The property has full oil fired central heating and electricity is from a dual-generator system which is very effective and easy to use, and as the unit is not in the house, it is not noisy.

The house is tastefully furnished in classical style, with some interesting features. There is a caretaker who lives and works nearby, who can call in if you have any problems at all.

We had wifi installed in 2019 and it works very well. Mobile phones sometimes struggle for reception so we have provided a very good Land Line phone for your use.

Please ask if you have any specific queries for items not listed, or anything you might like us to book for you during your stay (e.g. horse-riding).

There is plenty of parking, and we strongly recommend that at least one of the party has a car, as public transport is virtually non-existent in the area. For winter stays, if somebody has a 4x4 it will help with coping in snow! (Thankfully a very rare occurrence in South Devon!).

Where you’ll be

Halwell, England, United Kingdom

There is a fine variety of beaches (anything from a real smugglers cove at Dartmouth, "Compass Cove", to the beautiful sandy beaches of Bantham & Bigbury Bay' Goodrington Sands is also very popular. Nearby there is Agatha Christie's former home, Greenway.

Great days out for the whole family nearby would include - Buckfast Butterfly Farm, Dartington Hall Estates and Gardens, Totnes Elizabthean Museum, Penny Well farm, Paignton zoo, plus much more.... there also also lovely places to go for a bike ride!

Near Crabadon is Woodlands Park, which, with numerous adventure activities, is immensely popular with energetic children.

There are many eating places worthy of note. The Maltsters Arms at Tuckenhay was once the business of Keith Floyd ('the galloping gourmet') and still serves excellent food. There's the Ferry Boat Inn at Dittisham in a most beautiful setting right by the River Dart, serving good food - being the hub of the community, you can sometimes join in Pub Quizes, and it is a Mecca for the sailing fraternity. And talking of sailing, we can organise dinghy sailing instruction for you with a very good instructor.

We favour the Seven Stars Hotel in Totnes for excellent food, but arguably the most famous for 'haute cuisine' is the Carved Angel in Dartmouth, if you have a good budget.

For the family right near Crabadon, apart from walks in the woods, is a cycle route to Harbertonford (2 miles) where there's a shop (the road is no longer passable by car), and as mentioned elsewhere, the swimming pool.
