The Shepherd's Rest is one of a kind: a shepherd's hut, traditional in design, but incorporating all the comforts you need for a peaceful night's lochside bed and breakfast at any time of year. En suite, double glazing, underfloor heating and an enormous room service breakfast hamper.
The Shepherd's Rest is designed for couples and single travellers. The double bed is enclosed on three sides by the hut's walls and comes with plenty of cushions for creating a comfy space to recline during the evening. There is a digital radio complete with an iPod dock and aux-in socket, so you can choose from a wide range of radio stations or else bring your own music. Our Wifi is free to use with some important restrictions due to our very remote location - see the house rules section for details.
Board games, vintage books, tea and coffee, slippers, a hair dryer and towels are all neatly stowed in the hut for your use. There are organic toiletries in the en suite shower room and some tasty Tunnocks teacakes next to the kettle.
A folding table and stools are readily accessible for when we bring you your hot room service breakfast hamper each morning. You fold up the table and make your bed, we drop off an enormous hamper, then you start your day with cereals, porridge, toast, pastries, yoghurt and our freshly made hot filled breakfast rolls with your choice of fillings.
The enclosed nature of the bed means it is not suitable for guests who are taller than about 190cm (6' 3").
You have access to the hut, a large, locked storage chest immediately outside, and a patio table and chairs which are shared with other guests. One car parking space is available for guests staying in the Shepherd's Rest.
Our house is a family home so its gardens are not available for guest use, however you are located in a forest clearing and the vast, natural beauty of east Loch Lomond is before you, so you have no shortage of places to roam or leafy oak trees to sit beneath during your stay. The shore is about 300 metres from the hut.
Interaction with guests
One of us will always be present to welcome you to the Shepherd's Rest and to check you out at the end of your stay. You will also always see one of us during breakfast service.
We are often out during the day but we are always home overnight when there are guests in the hut. When we're home we're always happy to give advice and suggestions for days out, places to explore and where to eat, except late in the evening once our own children are tucked up in bed.
Other things to note
The nearest shop and cash machine are at Balmaha, 4 miles south. There are restaurants at Balmaha and also at Rowardennan, which is 3 miles north.
-WiFi internet connection: some important conditions of use-
We have Wifi, but it is very slow. If you're coming from a town or city it will be much, much slower than you are used to. This means that while we are happy to share it with you, we must insist you do so respectfully. To ensure you know what you can do with our wifi and what you can't, here are the rules:
1. You don't try to visit any media streaming service like Netflix or YouTube or similar.
2. You don't try to upload lots of data to a cloud backup service or social media. This includes photo albums. If your device automatically backs up to iCloud or a similar service, please switch that function off during your stay.
3. You don't rely on it for any business purpose, including video conferencing and time-sensitive email. Aside from the fact that you're meant to be on holiday, we simply can't give you a warranty that our internet service will always be working and available.
4. You respect the fact that there are parental controls on our wifi that prevent access to certain categories of web content. We will not switch this off for any reason. Sometimes, laptops provided by your employer may have their internet settings configured so as not to be compatible with parental controls. You are responsible for working that out with your IT support desk.
We reserve the right to disconnect any user who isn't using our wifi in a respectful manner. Thankfully we only very rarely have to actually do this and we're sure as a seasoned Airbnb traveller you won't be next!
You will find the wifi network name and password in the guest information folder in the hut.
The hut, and our house, form part of a small residential area, the "Forestry Cottages". We ask all our guests to respect the right of our neighbours, and our own children, to peace and quiet and we don't allow guests to entertain guests of their own in the hut during their stay.
