Big horizon: rustic 'chic' slab hut - all re-cyled materials - on 3-acre property on pristine Myall Lake, Myall National Park, NSW. One of only 4 private lake-waterfront properties, just 8 minutes drive to Seal Rocks, #ryanhut is a retreat...with wifi.

The hut and the wide waterfront surrounds are unsafe for small children/toddlers. PHOTOGRAPHY: Stephen Hobbs/Dungog Contemporary

The space
FIRST UP: we are following Airbnb's recommended COVID cleaning and disinfectant routines, as well as the safety of having 72 hours between all #ryanhut bookings.

At the hut you will experience the rhythm of the day: the big sky, rain on the tin roof, the shifting reflections on the lake. This private waterfront slab hut is yours to enjoy. We're committed to careful use of all energy, and have solar power. We honour the Worimi people, on whose land #ryanhut sits.

It's autumn and the days are perfect, embrace the hut-ness, the breezes, the beautiful landscape, the soft slouchy lounges ....and the beautiful wood fire. Take in the lake's limitless horizon. Kayak on the lake.

The whole slab-hut, with its contemporary kitchen, is for rent. Our Airbnb fee includes making up your king-size bed with sun-dryed cotton sheets and providing soft bathroom towels.

The coastline and beaches are pretty much as natural as they were 50 years ago, and way back further. Being in a National Park, there is restricted development. There are views for miles with no houses - or people - in sight. Incredible, given we are only 3.5 hours from Sydney itself.

And an interesting side story - one that's part of Australia's contemporary history - the slabs are the same wood, from the same forest, as used for the Sydney Opera House. Our family was contracted [way back in 1960s] to supply all the wood.

You will need a car. I recommend a trip to Seal Rocks and a walk up to the Seal Rocks light house itself so you can get a sense of the stunning coastline and raw beauty of the local landscape. The idea is to surrender ..... to having a holiday.

Guest access
The whole hut is there for you to enjoy. In summer open up the doors and windows ... and feel the breeze. In winter sit by a warm wood fire.

Other things to note
We collect our own pure rain water, and are on solar power. In the garden we have fresh herbs, seasonal, so depends on the season. We are restoring the nearby creek with indigenous plants and have planted 50 paperbark and wattle (acacia) seedlings. Our indigenous grasses are propagated locally. Fingers crossed! This is an ongoing commitment (and joy), heading towards 2030. Your rental fee is going towards that long-term restoration project + supporting and working with local community.

The access to many of Australia's most beautiful beaches - seven minutes drive to Seal Rocks and Light House beaches, a bit further on are Bluey's, Boomerang and Elizabeth beaches. The Myall Lake waterfront is literally your front door at the hut, and the water stretches to the horizon. You can jump into the hut's little boat and row into the lake or quietly walk the waterfront and take in its beauty. It is a unique setting, in any weather and season. As your host I will help you with whatever you need to make your stay special.

PLEASE NOTE: while the hut is quiet in itself, there can be traffic noise [from The Lakes Way] at busy traffic times e.g. during school and public holidays and weekend peak traffic times.

NEXT DOOR: There is also another house on the property, a beautiful wooden house owned by our cousins, who stay only occasionally. You will have complete privacy.

I’m committed to caring with great respect for the environment, and underway with regeneration work on the property’s creek, a 10-20 year project, to which your fees are directed. The hut is using solar power, and is built from recycled materials. My extended family lives between Sydney and rural Dungog - which is near our slab hut at Bungwahl/Seal Rocks. This land has been in our family since the mid 1800s. I am Founder, ARROW Collective, a philanthropy start-up, currently in partnership with Sydney Opera House seed-funding arts projects, and Co-Founder, SPARKKLE, stories about creatives and their dreams.

During your stay
We let you just take in your retreat - the privacy of the hut and its very unique waterfront location. Drop your bags and settle in to the gentle summer breezes, and in winter in front of the warm wood-fire. In summer and winter .. enjoy the hut's warm embrace and rustic-ness. We also have a small library of design and architecture books.

And, if wanting to explore the waterfront, we have a small row boat you can use, or can arrange for kayaks to be dropped off at the hut for a day or weekend, and picked up from the hut.

Your Airbnb rental fee is going towards our creek restoration project on the waterfront land.
