The house has recently been updated, but the 1890s charm remains. It's quaint and cozy - not formal or stuffy. You don't see homes like this one everyday!

We will provide you with a traditional Newfoundland breakfast that may include toutons, baked beans, eggs, meat, fresh preserves, homemade bread, pancakes with fresh berries, fish-n-brewis etc. We also have a tea/coffee/snack station to help yourself to that may include fruit, bars, homemade cookies etc. that you can always help yourself to.

The space
Your yellow bedroom with two twin beds with duvets and handmade Newfoundland quilts is on the second floor with the shared bathroom on the first floor. But don't worry - we also provide bathrobes for your convenience. We will also provide some toiletries - including our very own handmade soaps scented with Canadian Fir Balsam that are gift bagged for you to take with you. Salon shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion await you in the bathroom also.

We also have an outdoor fire pit and seating for you to enjoy. Just let us know and we can start up a nice fire for you!

We want you to have a fantastic time here whether you are a people or a puppy :-) For those traveling with a dog, we will have a dog bed in your room with a basket including food/water bowls, treats, and a toy for your pet's enjoyment. They are also welcome to stay behind when you go out. While you are on vacation, please enjoy every freedom!

If there is a third person in your party (or your group of two would like separate rooms), we can provide additional accommodation in a small, second red room with 1 twin bed that will have similar features (minus a tv) but the best views in the house! It's small, but cozy, and is only available for groups of three and not being rented out to separate groups at the same time so that we can concentrate our efforts on one group at a time in our modestly-sized home. Please email for details, as there is a small nightly surcharge ($50/night) that will need to be added separately for when you want to book the additional room.

Come stay with us - we'll do our best to make you happy that you did!

Other things to note
History of this Home:

There were three Ayles brothers that came to bonavista from England - John, Samuel, and Levi. Although there is record of a James Ayles that settled in Bonavista in 1804, but it is uncertain if it is the same Ayles family or not. The Ayles brothers were boat-builders by trade, but obviously house-builders as well, and we presume fishermen.

John lived in the white house on the corner of Ayles Rd. and Long Drung.
Samuel lived in the yellow neighbouring house.

Levi and Rebecca lived in this house which was probably built just before or shortly after being married. This was around 1894-96. Levi and Rebecca had no children.

Samuel had a son named Fred who was married, but his wife died either giving birth or shortly thereafter. Their daughter's name was Jessie, now Mouland. Fred never remarried so Jessie was raised by her Father and her Grandparents who lived next door. Fred and Jessie lived in the house after Levi and Rebecca.

The house was left to Jessie when Fred died in 1988. She and her husband Hedley owned the house until 1990. It was sold to a Dr. Douglas Bilbey but we don't know how long he actually lived there. It was purchased in 1998 by the Bashford's who brought it back to its former glory, as you can tell from some of the before/after pictures in the listing. It was later sold to our family in 2016.

We are in the historic Mockbeggar area of Bonavista - the ocean is in every direction! It'll take you less than a minute to walk to the Beach and dip your toes into the frigid Atlantic!

A perfect day in our neighborhood:

After breakfast, take a morning stroll along the boardwalk around Old Day's Pond, view unique homes, or check out local artisans. Enjoy the rugged coastline at Long Beach and Moses Point. Recharge in Neil's Yard with a coffee and a crepe. Check out the Mockbeggar Plantation or step onto the Matthew, a replica commemorating over 500 years of history. Grab an ice cream at Little Dairy King or a beer at Shannon's Pub & Grill. For a fantastic dining experience, don't miss the Boreal Diner or visit the Garrick Theatre to finish off your day. Enjoy the sunset, breathe in the ocean air, and rest well! You deserve it!

There's also so much to do just outside of our immediate neighborhood - the Bonavista Peninsula has so much to offer! My wife Betty and I recently retired and moved back to Newfoundland from where we were living in Calgary to beautiful Bonavista with our small dog, Peppee. I love the great outdoors, particularly fishing. But my absolute favourite pastime is watching the best team in the world - The Chicago Blackhawks! I have been a courier most of my life and I love to drive and travel. In particular, I love this area of Newfoundland for its rugged beauty, icebergs, and lighthouse. Betty enjoys reading, puzzles, and visiting small towns and shops. But more than anything, we love spending time with our Granddaughter in St. John's, who I'm very proud to say is turning out to be quite the hockey player!

During your stay
We spend a lot of our time in the parlour in front of the wood stove. It's a small space, but you are welcome to sit with us and enjoy the fire! Feel free to enjoy the house as if it was yours!
