The Dormitory is a mixed (male and female) one , however as we move towards being a more woman-centred space then this may change. the Dorm has two cubicles or "cubbys" each accommodating one person. the wider room has four bunks which still retain some level of privacy based on how they are committed. the room can accommodate 8 persons. There are 2 shared restrooms, with showers.

The space

Cedar Ridge Lodge Inn is a home hostel, it is located approximately 10 / 15 minutes from the centre of the town and is serviced by ROUTE (shared taxi). It is off the beaten track, a little away from the town, but easily accessible. It is close to a large shopping plaza with all services. It is an art space, reading space, ‘lying-in-a-hammock chillin space. It is family run and is a space in which to be comfortable, safe and cared for. We are very experienced and knowledgeable as we all work in tourism and will ensure that all questions are answered honestly, in order to guide & support our travelers moving around the island.

Guest access

Travelers are at home on the balcony, under a tree, in the garden; in fact anywhere a space can be captured and personalized to meet the mood and moment. Guests are not encouraged to bring other guests into the space, because it is shared and everyone leaves there stuff around. It is safer and the system works for us to have the privacy and interactions positive for the home.
Guests are allowed access by the front door, someone is always on hand to let them in or an arrangement made for key collection. The house is fully alarmed and monitored by the local security company.

Interaction with guests

The house is full of information, support and helping hands: there is a housekeeper / manager - Ms. Madge, and the live in student - Lisa, from time to time there are other persons from the Rastafari Village that lend an hand in meeting the needs of guests. I am also available to give support and interactions as the needs arise. The house is affiliated to the Rastafari Indigenous village and other community projects and activities. Please ask if interested in volunteering at such a project, school or within a community or in supporting any of these educational experiences.

Other things to note

Cedar Ridge Lodge Inn is a ‘home’ hostel. It is located approximately 10 / 15 minutes from the centre of the town, the beaches, shopping and even the airport if the traffic is not too bad. The general area is serviced by a ROUTE (shared) taxi system. Cedar Ridge is the name of the road on Bogue Hill, it is off the beaten track, a little away from the town, but easily accessible.
It is close to a large shopping plaza with all services. It is an art space, a reading space, a ‘lying-in-a-hammock chillin space, most of all it’s a no-stress space.
It is family run and is a space, in which to be comfortable, safe and cared for. Our Housekeeper Ms. Madge is experienced in what she does and Lisa is knowledgeable about things to do and places to go, it is important to ask for whatever is needed. Both persons support me in guiding travellers and providing answers with honesty, clarity, accuracy and integrity for travellers moving around in this new environment.
Other things to note;
We recommend that travelers move around with a cell phone, preferably bringing an old unlocked one so that they can purchase a local SIM card to make calls for onward bookings or otherwise. We have wifi in the house so communication is easy.
We provide the following listing for travelers to bring:
•own toiletries
•favorite dried cereals
•nuts and grains
•cheese if you love it
•mosquito repellent, sun block, any medication you use or may need
•and a fold up raincoat.
These things can be expensive here and almost all our guests engage with them.
Cedar Ridge is also a part of a community of Rastafari and we often make donations to their development: Guests often ask what to bring for donations: the response is "art and craft making stuff" we also say: first-aid stuff bandages, scissors, gloves etc. or agricultural tools or organic seeds, and we also say...bring whatever you feel would be good to donate to community development - pencils, paper, crayons etc.

Cedar Ridge is a location and it is also an experience. Be prepared to meet people from all corners of the world. Arlene is a fountain of information. My sense is that she knows the island intimately and can make recommendations about where to go (depending on what your goals are), where to stay (when not at her place) and how to get there. During my stay I witnessed Arlene interacting with people from all over the word. She did so in a cheerful, courteous and patient manner. She appears to truly enjoy sharing her home with others. Her residence is a unique blend of outdoor and indoor space. Artists will feel welcome at Cedar Ridge because Arlene's home is filled with art. Being an artist myself, I loved that aspect. As a single female traveler I was confident in making a choice to stay at Cedar Ridge. The house is located on a spectacularly high hill, that overlooks Montego Bay and affords travelers an unparalleled view of the harbour. The bay itself is ever-changing and I enjoyed photographing it often. Quite visually inspiring. Location is somewhat off the beaten path. Some people might find this a draw back. Personally, it was refreshing to be away from the hustle and bustle. Line taxis are the easiest way to get around and a taxi can also be ordered specifically for people wishing to go into town. There is usually others who are willing to split the cost. Downtown amenities are about 10 minutes drive. There is also a plaza within walking distance (if your legs are strong and healthy). Fortunately, it is, in part, a downhill jaunt. I did it and I am, let us say... not a "spring chicken". Longer excursions can be undertaken from Cedar Ridge. People who arrive at the same time often bond and then travel outward and onward together. What can I say. Paridice. I will be back.....i, i. Greetings to everyone at Cedar Ridge

Response from Arlene:
What can I say about this guest Suzanne, it was a perfect match to have her stay with us. She made herself comfortable and useful and just relaxed into life in Jamaica. She was not afraid to explore the country or the people, she traveled freely on her own and also with new friends made at the hostel. We look forward to having Suzanne come back and to be a part of the Cedar Ridge family. One Love and many thanks for a perfect match!

I was welcomed at the gate by Julian who showed me a room and got quickly back to the show he was watching on his computer. I eventually found the washroom where there were instructions not to shower due to a severe water shortage, suggested I shower at the beach. Really wanted a shower after a long travel day. The place is at least a twenty minute drive from the Mo Bay hip strip and I would not feel safe in the neighbourhood after dark, and I usually feel safe anywhere. The place gets locked up very tight at night with no way to get out without a main door key, would be a death trap if there was a fire. I strongly suggest you install a front door lock that guests could open. In the morning I had to wake Lisa, who lives there, to be on my way at 8:30 am. It does have a beautiful back porch overlooking the city and the room was clean and the fan worked.

Response from Arlene:
Hello Len, Gosh, I am reading your comments and I am deeply concerned. You arrived late at night and left early in the morning which really does not give you enough information to assess us, yet, you wrote an assessment to which I must respond in order to give balance and reality to what you have stated. Cedar Ridge is a home family hostel, and guests arriving late at night will be showed their room and left pretty much to acclimatize until morning. You left early in the morning so were not able to really sit with us to be orientated on what to do and where to go in Jamaica which is our speciality. The young man who opened the door to you is not a worker but a guest who was waiting up for you. The journey to the hostel from town - is actually fifteen minutes, but at night it may have felt longer and it was your first visit. We pride ourselves on keeping our guests safe by information and the systems in the house. We have lived here for over twenty years and operated the hostel for four of those years and during that time we have never had to worry about our systems for exiting and entering the hostel. WE always have people around at the hostel and your movements at any time would not have gone unnoticed. Finally, we are experience drought conditions islandwide and so there are notices about water usage, but at the time of your arrival we had water and the pressure was excellent! On behalf of the Cedar Ridge team we apologize for your disappointment in meeting your expectations, we understand. However, we have to note our comments on the unfair, hasty and contextual subjective assessment of our facility and service.

Cedar Ridge is a family home converted into a hostel, (everyone grown up and moved away so now we have space!). The house nevertheless, if always full of young people passing through and sharing their lives, experiences and perspectives with guests - its usually quiet, but never a dull moment.
My son started the hostel as a way to assist with expenses for the house. We have a lot of fun with guests as we have lots of information about touring the island, lots of networks to connect folks to and there are almost always events to recommend. You host, Arlene is Jamaican with lots of international experiences, the community is a quiet cul de sac with only a few houses on a hillside not far out of town. The culture is Rastafari, Vegan and artsy, we look forward to sharing.
ADDITIONALLY...
We are bringing on stream cottages at the Rastafari Indigenous Village, they are not up officially as yet but we are managing three of them for a trial period. So if you are specifically interested in natural, outdoorsey, rustic and completely ITAL. Please ask
