Nature Lovers Home, steps away from one of the prettiest beaches on the Osa Peninsula known as Playa Platanares or Preciosa Beach. Daily visitors, monkeys, toucans, scarlet macaws, iguanas and more.

Perfect for families with children! Toys, games, puzzles and trampoline.

This home is our primary residence for half of the year. We are open to renting it to responsible families and couples during the months we are in Canada.

Located 4 miles from Puerto Jimenez.

The space

Our space is unique in that it is a fully functional home. This is not just a vacation rental, it is our second home. It is absolutely perfect for travellers with children as there are toys, games, puzzles, and a trampoline. It is a 1 minute walk from a beautiful beach that is great for boogie boarding, surfing and even fishing. At higher tide there can be bigger waves for playing in and at low tide there are small pools in the sand that a toddler can play in. It really is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Osa!

On the downside -- there is no wifi within the house. You can take a one minute walk to either of the two hotels next door, enjoy lunch, dinner or a drink and access wifi; enjoy a swim, beer or coffee while you are there. The hotel Agua Dulce charges a small fee to hang out and swim for the day. Also - due to recent storms (as of late June 2017) and electrical surges our tv and microwave have gone on the fritz. We have gone through multiple televisions and microwaves over the years and it appears that we cannot win ..either the saltwater in the air or the electrical surges won't permit that either lasts long in our home. On the positive -- you are truly going to have to disconnect to the world of devices, tv, etc. We hope that you can find peace in the nature that surrounds you and that the lack of wifi or tv will not dampen your stay at our home.

Guest access

You have access to the entire home.

Interaction with guests

I am currently in Canada but I am available to help you make reservations for tours and put you in contact with the right people. I have a maid who lives right next door who can come and clean each morning and via her phone you can contact with me with any needs or concerns you may have. When you message me about the area you will see that I have a wealth of information to share with you. I have run a business in tourism in the Osa for 13 years now. I have friends and community there who are never far away and can be there to meet and greet you and offer any advice you may need.

Other things to note

I do have two dogs and one cat. They are outdoor animals. They have been raised with children and I have many children at my house all the time. They love the attention. The maid will pass by each morning to feed them and give them water. I also have a dog walker. This is my animals home. As I explained to you this is not just a vacation rental but our home and that is why the animals go with it. We hope you understand and that you are animal lovers.

Very Pricey Based on Expectations & NOT a Kid Friendly Beach! Cleanliness *Dealt with multiple Flying cockroaches (palmetto bugs) -They have pets in the public areas of the property that are very friendly, but the food that is left out for them probably attracts these roaches. Expectations * Didn't expect coffee machine to be lacking. The appliances other than the fridge either didn't work (microwave), or stopped working mid-stay (Oven). To be fair, we were advised that the microwave didn't work based on power issues but a surge protector which was absent would have taken care of this. The washer and dryer included in the listing needed pliers to operate. The hot water was either scalding or totally cold. When we mentioned there was a problem with the hot water, they sent someone over who a) first told us no one in the area has hot water (made us feel we should feel grateful there was anything), than told us it worked fine, than tried to repair which didn't work, and led to a rust color of the water the next day. *The property has a lot of kids amenities - toys, trampoline, etc. The description notes kids being able to play on the beach " in low tide a toddler could play in the pools of sand" which is accurate, but very misleading -- anything indicating that the beach is child friendly ought to be removed. The riptides are incredibly incredibly powerful - even during low tide. The kids wanted to play there but it's so dangerous. It’s definitely a surf beach which is referenced far less in the beach description. Communication * Host very friendly, but she's in Canada and you're left with local contacts to work with. Check-In * The place is very remotely located. Very detailed directions need to be provided to all guests. It's a wonder we found it. Value * When it comes down to it, with Agua Dulce and Iguana Lodge next door (both very nice properties - the latter being ultra luxury with a breathtaking pool) with prices starting at 1/3rd and 60% of this property cost respectively (those properties include wifi, real coffee, included made to order breakfast, a pool, hot water, and I’m only guessing no flying roaches) this place was very pricey – which I think is what set our expectations so high. Location * Location is fine if you may be looking to get away - but it's not a kid friendly area.

Response from Cara:
Ben, Thank you again for your feedback. We will most certainly make improvements on the justifiable complaints. In response to a few points, -We make coffee Costa Rican style at our home with a chorreador. My staff explained to Ben and his family how to use it. That being said I will happily invest in a normal coffee maker for those guests who are not interested in experiencing coffee the Costa Rican way. -The beach does have fluctuating tides as explained in the home profile. In my opinion it is most definitely just fine for small children. My own children have grown up on that beach as have many others. When the tide is high the waves are bigger and it is not suitable for small children. It then offers hours of fun for boogie boarding and surfing for bigger kids and adults. I would hate for other families to miss out on the beauty of our area thinking that their children could not play on the beach. I will post additional photos shortly to portray the beach at all times. All appliances are currently working. My maid lives directly next door and is available for washing and drying clothes for all my guests. I most definitely agree that the Osa Peninsula is remotely located, that is why most people consciously choose to vacation there. If that is where you want to go then my actual home is NOT remotely located at all. My home is only 4 miles from the town of Puerto Jimenez. People ride bikes, run and walk there daily from the town of Puerto Jimenez. The majority of rental houses and eco lodges in the Osa (often up to $500.00 per night) are located 1 to 2 hours from the town of Puerto Jimenez. The Osa Peninsula is definitely not for everyone; you must be willing to experience rugged beauty, prime rainforest, and a few insects (which I can guarantee you will find no matter where you stay in the rainforest). I have lived in the Osa for 15 years now and I am very aware of the pricing of rental homes, lodges and resorts. I purposely have my price extremely low. What I am earning from the rentals is going directly to paying the wages of those (a maid, gardener and dog walker) maintaining the home while we are away. In fact, $150.00 per night is a steal of a deal for a very large home with 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, complete kitchen, office, 2 living spaces, toys, trampoline and close access to everything. Again we are very sorry our home did not meet your personal expectations and we will most definitely improve upon the complaints that are valid.

We stayed one week at Cara's place in July and we had an AMAZING time! It was perfect for our family of 5 (kids are 4-6-8 year old) but could have accomodate more people no problem. The house is gorgeous (just like the pictures). We loved the mix of open areas and other that are screened (around sunset it can be useful, a few mosquitos). It's by far the most comfortable bed we slept in during our trip, nice hot shower, toys for kids, etc. So many little details that made us love this house. Close to the beach (2 minutes walk). The beach is beautiful, huge, almost to ourselves and so much fun at low tide with kids. The only downside for us is that other than that those 2-3 hours a day of low tide we could not swim in, the current is too strong (riptide, undertow) and big waves. During high tide we enjoyed the pool of the hotel (small fee) or played on the beach. Cara was very helpful and accommodating before and during the trip and everybody that she put us in touch with was also very nice and going out of their way to help us and make sure we had a good trip (like making us taste magic fruit, so cool). We saw scarlet macaw daily at the beach or flying over our head. Saw a few monkeys near the house, heard howler monkey (very cool) and saw all kind of lizards. The kids enjoyed playing with the cat and the dogs (they are big but very nice with kids). I'm usually scared of big dog and I was not of them, they don't jump on people which I really appreciated (I'm sure that a dog lover would I fall in love with them, for me not minding them is already a huge accomplishment). We didn't rent a car, only use a taxi every 2-3 days and it was fine. We did a few expeditions around that were also incredible (Matapalo, saw the 4 kinds of monkeys in a few hours, and Douphin tour, a must!)

Hello my name is Cara. I live half the year in Canada and half in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica. My husband and I own and operate a sportfishing business here in Costa Rica. I have two children and am a homeschooling mother due to our nomadic lifestyle as a family. We love to travel, meet new people, my son surfs everywhere he can, my husband fishes everywhere he can, and my daughter and I love photography and shopping.
We are very easy going people. We are self sufficient, clean and respectful.
