The Annexe at Hawthorne Brae is a chic and unique property situated in the picturesque historic Duddingston Village, a stone's throw from the centre of Edinburgh. Walk up the communal field and step into the staggering Hollyrood Park with stunning panoramic views of the city. Feed the swans on Duddingston Loch a mere 3 minutes away, or relax and contemplate in Dr Neil's Garden (4 mins) and end the day with a wee dram of whisky at the Sheep Heid Inn, Edinburgh's oldest pub, 50 steps away.
The Annexe is a Victorian addition to a stately Georgian Villa set in beautiful grounds, in the heart of Duddingston Village, a mere ten minute drive from Waverley Station in the centre of Edinburgh. It has a cottage-like cosy feel with painted floors so you don't need to worry about an errant glass of red wine or a spilled cup of Ribena, just concentrate on relaxing. Our design brief to ourselves was "Soho House", so it has a very boutique feel. On the ground floor there is a stunning brand-new airy kitchen / diner with views of a beautiful lawn and apple tree. All mod cons including induction hob and a full sized oven, dishwasher, fridge freezer and an optional microwave for those late night / early morning bottle feeds. Alongside the kitchen is a bathroom / toilet, a large, high ceilinged double room to the front with views across Duddingston to Craigmillar Castle, to the rear a really cosy kids room with single bed. Climb a charming spiral staircase to make way to the master bedroom with a kingsize bed and cosy pitched ceilings, a lovely bath/shower/toilet and then up three steps into a unique long living room with enough room to relax, read, play games, or maybe listen to some music from the top-end hi-fi, with turntable and classic vinyl to bring back good memories.
The property sleeps 5 comfortably with a sixth person (ideally a child) using a comfy 'bed in a bag' which can be put, sleep-over style, in the single room or in the warm living room. 5 people can sit comfortably in the kitchen at one time, to seat six is a bit more 'cosy' but possible. We provide large well starched white towels for everyone in all bathrooms.
Enjoy the garden out front with a secluded little space for your own barbecue... weather permitting!
Hawthorn Brae has a carriage driveway with one spare off-street parking space for the Annexe. On street parking is available in Duddingston Village and is not metered. The entrance is to the right of the main house.
Interaction with guests
As we live in the house next door, if there is any help needed, or indeed advice on places to visit and things to do we'd be more than happy, we're real Duddingston / Edinburgh advocates!
Other things to note
The only drawback of Duddingston Village is there is no immediately local shops. The closest is a Tesco Metro which is a good 15 min walk so if you want refreshments on arrival other than the ones we supply (tea, coffee, some alcohol and other essentials) then either order ahead from Tesco online, Waitrose, Sainsbury's or Asda, or bring something with you (both Waverly train station & The Airport have a serviceable Marks & Spencer).
We strongly recommend bringing walking attire, either boots, wellies or trainers that you don't mind getting muddy.
- Please treat the home as you would your own.
- Please respect the neighbours, and do not make significant noise or play loud music after 10pm.
- No parties
- If guests lock themselves out of the property OR they do not place keys in the lockbox at checkout, a £50 fee will apply. If a guest loses a set of keys during their stay, an £80 fee will apply.
We're a family of two musicians, three kids (8,6,5), a friendly dog called Oscar, less friendly and odd looking cats Peter & Wendy and our latest addition to our menagerie three Guinea Pigs by the names LaLa, Sparkles, and Fang. We were all based in central London until we decided to make a new life for ourselves in Edinburgh, Scotland over a year ago.
Being fans of seasons we mainly tend to holiday in Scotland. Our main loves are cooking really tasty, healthy food for our loved ones, with myself having a love for fine wines. Walks are my greatest joy which is what makes the location of our home and AirBnB perfect as it backs onto one of the greatest public spaces for a capital city that you're ever likely to find.
As both hosts and guests, we're polite, discreet and not at all noisy considering our professions!
It has been a joy to create a space that is a cosy and restful one for our AirBnB guests. We're such advocates of where we live and love sharing great things to do in and around Edinburgh.
AirBnb has been a revelation to us as a family as by far the best way to enjoy travels with our young brood and all their little idiosyncrasies.
