A peaceful room at the edge of wilderness but close to the modern conveniencies of the main house at Marjarinne, near Ivalo village.
A simple heated room with beautiful views through a glass door and small window. You'll share the toilets and showers of the main house (the bathroom symbol refers to these). The kitchen in the main house is available for cooking. There is also a lakeside sauna for bathing.
What Marjarinne offers:
-A unique experience on the edge of wilderness, with modern conveniences right at hand (the main house is the beautiful home of an artist and her daughter, with walls decorated by art inspired by the northern nature)
-silence and tranquility of nature
-a neighbor- and tourist-free zone (no tourists here -except for you and possibly a few other guests! Our closest neighbor is on the other side of the hill: a young reindeer herder and his saami fiancée)
What Marjarinne doesn't offer:
-shopping (except for art)
Marjarinne is an excellent place for example for photographers (no light pollution in the winter) or other peaceful and creative work (writing, painting etc.). The norhern sky is well visible from our upper balcony or the yard. In the summer the sun travels along the horizon above Lake Inari and casts a wonderful light on the hills and waters.
There are good hiking grounds around also and the shore of the lake Inari only at a 500 meters distance. The river Ivalo is also very close as well as the small Lake Martinjärvi where you can find our lake side sauna. There is a spring at the other side of this lake where you can go and taste wonderful arctic spring water.
If there are no guests in the sauna-suite the upstairs shower is available for you. Otherwise, you'll use the bathroom&shower downstairs.
The kitchen is in shared use as mentioned and we hope you clean after yourself and leave everything the way you found it.
As we try to respect the surrounding nature in our daily life, we have a compost in use during the warmer seasons and we hope you'll take this into account in your cooking&use of kitchen (which basically means just putting the organic waste into the correct bin).
The lake side sauna is also in shared use, but if there are occasions when you would like to have the place all for yourself, we can discuss this in detail. In general, any evening the sauna is in use it is our presumption that anyone staying or living at Marjarinne can use it (in turns of course, so everyone has their own privacy for bathing, 1hr for bathing/group). In the summer the sauna is warmed up almost every night. If you want to have the sauna for your private use or have some more extra time, this is possible for an extra fee or, alternatively, you can gather the firewood from the nature yourself and prepare the sauna yourself.
Other things to note
There might be a few other people staying at Marjarinne.
Our two dogs are quite friendly and let us know if there are reindeer walking close by. They are good company on walks around Marjarinne.
There is a Wifi available if you need internet access. The WiFi of the main house reaches to the Writer's Studio (The WiFi-key is on a paper on the studio table or in the guest-folder in the main house.)
Smoking allowed outside. We have a puppy, so please make sure you use an ashtray or smthg similar.
Toilet paper and handsoap available. Towels and bed sheets 10€.
Doing laundry (downstairs bathroom) 10€.
Possibility to cook food by a bonfire at the bonfire place near the mainhouse.
You are free to spend time also in the dining room area in the main house. The WiFi reaches to your room but does not work well all the time (if it doesn't seem to work, try using it in the main house).
How to use the common/shared spaces in the main house:
Leave everything you find in the shared spaces (kitchen and living room and dining area) as you found it. This means keeping most of your things in your room. There is usually room for your food in the kitchen cupboard and the fridge. A few books or things here and there is ok, but please respect our home and other people who also have the right to use the sofas and tables etc. in the shared spaces.
I'm away a lot and my mother, who is in charge of the AirBnB during these times, lives up on the hill in her artist's studio with her dogs and there might be a few other people staying at Marjarinne. Please take this into consideration and treat others as you'd like to be treated yourself.
We hope you have traveler's insurance to guarantee you a safe and enjoyable trip.
Please respect and follow our ecological living principles in honor of arctic nature, which means (especially in wintertime!):
-use the firewood reasonably (the fireplaces store the heat!)
-close the front doors behind you
-use hot water reasonably
-turn out the lights when not needed
-use the sauna max 1 time/day (extra use possible for extra fee)
In the summer, also remember to:
-put bio-waste in bio-bin
