Where you’ll be

Bixter, Scotland, United Kingdom

The Shetland Islands are ideal for walking, fishing, birdwatching and wildlife. Aith is the main hub for the West Mainland, the location of some of the prettiest scenery in Shetland, such as the spectacular cliffs at Westerwick and the fine sandy beach at Reawick. Nearby Michaelswood is a wonderful wooded area which delights young and old alike. It is a novelty in this treeless landscape and one of Shetland’s most child friendly attractions, especially with the recently added dinosaur trail! The Aith Marina in the heart of the village has boats available to charter for fishing and sightseeing. Britain’s most northerly RNLI lifeboat is stationed at Aith Pier. The Aith Lifeboat Gala Day in June is a fun day out for all the family followed by the regatta in July which includes sailing and rowing races. The waterfall at the Burn of Lunklett is just a 5 minute drive north of Aith. A short path leads up the burn to the waterfall. After that you can treat yourself to some home bakes from the Cake Fridge Tearoom, a local café (or the eponymous 24/7 fridge full of cakes outside!). The West Mainland Leisure Centre is only a few hundred metres away from the house and has a swimming pool, climbing wall, fitness suite and health suite. The local village hall runs a social club and bar at weekends, often with live music.

My husband Peter and I live in Voe, Shetland. We love meeting new people and introducing them to Shetland through our house in Aith. We are a retired architect and teacher. We enjoy travelling ourselves both in the UK and abroad and recently spent time in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. We also enjoy music, films and walking.
