Other things to note
Blaencwm lies at the head the Rhondda Fawr valley about half way between Treochy and Hirwaun. Two collieries were opened here during the Industrial Revolution, the Dunraven Colliery in 1865 and the Glenrhondda Colliery in 1911. Both closed by 1966 and the sites and surrounding hills have since been landscaped, leaving little trace of their industrial past. There is a local group lobbying to re-open the Blaencwm to Blaengwynfi railway tunnel (see Rhondda Tunnel Society), which will be the second longest pedestrian / cycling tunnel in the world. See 'BBC Wales, Nature and Outdoors, Walking', for an example of a typical scenic, circular walk
