No electricity. Enjoy Candlelit evenings, in off grid comfort - Think Little Red Riding Hoods Grandmothers cottage with 30 acres of woodland estate and lakes to play in. Hammocks, ping pong, fishing, den building.
Cook a local steak on the firepit while watching the stars. Inside light the candles and wood burner to heat radiators and hot water for the big roll top bath.
Well behaved dogs welcome (£20)
Sorry not suitable for young children due to fire risk and steep stairs.

The space

The cottage is furnished with loved pieces of furniture and antique china. It looks stunning lit up in candlelight and we have been selected as a special place to stay by Alistair Sawdays.
A cosy double bedroom upstairs, a big bathroom with roll top bath, sink and proper wc. Then a large bedroom with two single beds and modesty screen and comfortable chairs, this room can double up as a living room. Downstairs there's a dining area and sofa and a kitchen with woodburner, gas cooker, small cooler and table.
The daffodills and bluebell dell are stunning in the spring, then the rhododendrons in May in full summer everything is lush. Come and fish, spot the badgers, play ping pong and lounge in the hammocks, before toasting marshmallows in the firepit.

Guest access

30 acres of woodland, two lakes, cycle routes
Motor bikes welcome

Interaction with guests

I'm usually available but will advise you at booking if not. Happy to answer any queries and share a beer and talk about vehicles, the Sahara, Philosophize etc.

Other things to note

Although no electricity, there is a proper gas cooker, and a small gas cartridge fridge. All linen and towels provided. You might want to bring slippers as there are hard floors and wellies/walking boots for the woods.
The woodburner powers hot water and radiators but there is also a gas valour heater, plenty of extra blankets, feather duvet on the main bed (let us know if you'd prefer a synthetic one), synthetic on the singles. Wood supplied. Lots of board games, ping pong, garden Jenga, 2 fishing rods. Firepit. Please message us for any special requirements.

Beautiful, cosy and very well equipped. No electricity but lots and lots of candles and lanterns provide so everywhere was well lit. Brilliant cooking facilities with a gas cooker and a log burner that gave lots of hot water to fill the lovely freestanding bath.. Very well thought out and I can't fault a thing.. Full of lovely quirky antiques. What more could you need..

This place is something else. Utterly stunning and its surprising how quickly you get used to no electricity and "standard heating". The kids had the most amazing time collecting the wood each morning and exploring the woods finding more dens, seating area's, tree swings etc. We loved getting home after dinner or a day out and lighting all the candles settling down for a family board game. Although we came in August, it wasn't hot and sunny all the time and the chilly nights I was a bit concerned about but the engine house doesn't get cold at all - it's really quite warm. The beds are fabulous - far better than mine at home and we feel very rested after our time here. In fact we loved it so much we stayed an extra night and even then wished we had booked the whole week! Angie and Dan are fabulous hosts who go above and beyond to ensure your stay here is perfect, from getting lost and trying to find the place, recommending things to do, helping us with our autistic son and even dropping us a text to let us know of a meteor shower we should check out. Lovely people with a lovely place :)

We spent 10 days as a family with a 15 year old boy in the Engine House, all of us would have loved to stay longer! Angie and Dan have put so much thought into every detail! The Engine House was very comfortable, cosy and easy going. We loved the swing (even our visitors had a go and a good laugh going high up towards the trees!), playing ping pong under the trees (the rain didn't get through), played card and board games, spent some quiet time angling, had a nice barbeque with our visitors. The beds were very comfortable, the bath tub amazing in the candlelight, everything was functioning and very clean. Thank you Dan and Angie very much for this experience and also for sharing your time, house, your friend and your wine with us the other night. This certainly added to some very special memories! Places we liked visiting: Whitchurch, Shrewsbury, York, Chester. We hope to be able to come back one day. Monika, Guido and Henning from Germany

Lovely place, very quiet. No 'leccy is a bit of a challenge but fun for a few days.

If you're looking for time out, for a place to regroup your emothions, recharge your batteries and remind yourself of life's priorities, this is the place for you. The house and setting oozes charm and the gentle, embracing rythm of nature and simple living. Dan and Angie are fantastic hosts and we spent a hugely enjoyable and slightly wine filled evening (such great hosts!) with them. If you get a chance to see Dan's collection of exotic vehicles then do... The Engine Shed itself was really comfortable with excellent matresses and tasteful furnishings and the cooking was a delight by candlelight - as were the nightly board games. The woods were great to meander through - though walking further afield was problematic with footpaths not well used or obstructed by fields of wheat. Great pubs and food within a 10mile radius though Whitchurch itself, apart from Benjamin's Deli (excellent Italian produce) and The Bear (good beer and gammon and eggs) was a little tired. But who cares as it's much more pleasureable to stay at the Engine Shed and cook your food on the firepit. Oh, and drink the wine from Benjamin's...

Absolutely idyllic location & a welcome break from the fast pace of life. No wifi & no electricity in a beautiful place. Plenty of time for the family spent in the wilds of the woods.

Dan & Angie have a beautiful place, has been thoughtfully decorated and looks stunning in candlelight! We enjoyed the campfire, ping pong, hammocks, board games and surrounding country side - including a dip in the lake which was so pretty. Thank you for having us!
