Our camp is off road, off grid, literally on the edge of the BWCA. 2 cabins, sauna, pavilion, fire pit, beach and dock on Fall Lake outside Ely. 20 minutes from town, but 3 million acres of wilderness out the door. Fish, canoe, swim, explore woods and lakes. Spend your whole time here or use as basecamp for backcountry trips. See deer and eagles, listen to loons, and spot a moose, bear, or hear a wolf howl in the distance. Propane lanterns, cookstoves and refrigeration, hand pump clear spring water from our pristine well. Life on the edge.

House Rules

This is a rustic set of cabins with off grid, with gas lanterns, stove and refrigeration, wood stove heat, off road, access is by water across from the Fall Lake campground. I have a cabin manual to familiarize guests with the operation of everything. There is no road behind you for 100 miles! Town is 20 minutes away by boat and car.
Note: because of the off road nature of the camp, we cannot provide linens or towels. Bring your own sheets pillows, blankets or sleeping bags, and towels. See cabin manual for full operational information.
Wood Wisdom
IMPORTANT! The wood stacked and split in the woodsheds is for use in the woodstoves and sauna only. For outdoor cooking or campfires, use the wood under tarps or in piles near the fire circle, or gather your own dry wood from the forest. Make sure your wood is firm and dry, not green or punky or it will be smoky and give off less heat to boot.

My friends and I had a lot of fun during our weekend at Joe's cabin. He was a good host, quickly responded to any troubles we had, and had great advice as to what to do in the area. We were so happy using the gas grill that was under a covered roof when it rained during mealtimes, and for the plethora of supplies provided. We enjoyed hanging out on the dock, swimming in front of the cabins, exploring Joe's recommendations on Fall Lake via canoe, and looking up at the stars from our campfire! Our ONLY problems occurred via sleeping arrangements. The two double beds/bunkbed in the main cabin CAN fit 2 people each, but it was a tight squeeze! Would only recommend planning to share it if you are ready to cuddle :-) Additionally, there were some mice that kept the main cabin sleepers up at night, however Joe quickly responded and led us to some traps and it was better on our second night. Overall, we loved our rugged trip in Ely!

This is a gem..we traveled as a group of 4 friends to hike, fish & Joe's cabin couldn't have been better, perfect blend of rustic backcountry but all the thing you could need and more all on private lake front cabin with a view. Joe was a fantastic host and we could not have had a better stay!!! We plan to visit annually. It is rustic and off grid we loved this, but make sure to plan accordingly & enjoy

We found ourselves lucky to spend our weekend up at Joe's property on beautiful Fall Lake. The property was very well kept and clean and Joe provided many of the necessities (tools and equipment) we needed that helped keep our packing to a minimum. Book these rugged deep woods cabins if you are looking for an adventure to remember!

We are organizational consultants and entrepreneurs raising twin teens! We love the outdoors, everything from hiking, swimming and skiing to making maple syrup in late winter and and hard cider in early fall. We built our home here in the Happy Valley to raise a family and foster community.
We think you will feel the inspiration and love that went into creating this unique homestead for rest and renewal.
