The Double Dutch Guesthouse is a quiet, cosy & comfortable home set in the serenely beautiful Okains Bay. We are a 20-acre small sheep farm only a 15-20 minute walk, 5 minute bike ride, or 2 minute drive from Okains Bay Beach - often described as the 'Best Beach on the Banks Peninsula'. We are surrounded by lush volcanic hillsides...every angle is postcard worthy. The Guesthouse is the perfect place to get away from the hustle & bustle of the city, or a start or finish to your NZ adventure!

The space

The Guesthouse is a 3-bedroom home with an open floor-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area and washing facilities. It is situated at the entrance of a 20-acre sheep farm with easy access for multiple vehicles amongst beautiful lavender bushes and fruit trees. The owners live in the 1890s Colonial Cottage just 20 metres from the Guesthouse and are just a phone call away if you have any questions or concerns. Pots, pans, tea towels, and a stove/oven and microwave are provided in the kitchen and all bed-linen and bath towels are provided free of charge. The landline in the guest house is available for local calls and to contact the owner's cottage free of charge. The guesthouse would be suitable for couples, families, or respectful groups of friends. The main room is a king + single bed with full ensuite bathroom, and the queen bed and triple single bed rooms share a separate full bathroom. *PLEASE NOTE: The guesthouse is located on a working farm. If you are bringing children they need to be supervised on the property. Also, we charge the same additional amount ($25/day) for all humans regardless of age, and have an 8 person total maximum occupancy. If you are planning on bringing a child younger than two please mark them down as a child, not an infant, when you are booking with us. Thank you for understanding, we find that each additional person, no matter how small, creates an additional strain on our systems and property, as well as more cleaning for us. Have a great stay :) *

Guest access

Laundry room within the house is available in the afternoons and evenings for $3/wash and $3/dry. Full kitchen amenities and wrap-around veranda accessible to all rooms with hill-side and pastoral views. Veggie garden and herbs on reasonable request. Fresh free-range eggs for sale in the kitchen. Farm tours also available on request.

Interaction with guests

We (Reagan & Will) are often involved with farm activities including work with the sheep flock, chooks and veggie garden. If you don't see us around the guesthouse or cottage, we have a long-range phone that we can be reached on during your stay. We provide fresh free-range eggs daily from our chooks for a nominal fee and access to the veggie garden for herbs for your meals. We offer farm tours, feeding of apples to our 'apple eater' sheep, and helping with feeding of the bottle-fed lambs in season. We are also outdoor enthusiasts and can offer advice and maps of popular (and less known) hikes/tramps, local activities around Banks Peninsula such as swimming with dolphins and catamaran cruises, and many other activities to keep you as busy as you'd like to be on your holiday.

Other things to note

Our property is on the Opara riverfront and the birdlife is abundant, including fantails (piwakawaka), wood pigeons (kereru), bellbirds (korimako), NZ kingfisher (kotare), pukeko, white-faced heron, spur-winged plovers, pied (torea) and black oystercatchers, pied stilt (poaka), California quail, Australasian harrier (kahu), many types of ducks including the paradise shellduck (putangitangi)...the list goes on and on.

We advise you to visit a supermarket in Christchurch or Akaroa to buy fresh ingredients as we are a self-catering guesthouse. The small store in Okains Bay can provide you with basic supplies, such as milk, sugar etc. but has limited opening hours.

Coming from Christchurch there is a New World supermarket in Halswell, just a few kilometers out of Christchurch on SH 75. Akaroa has a Four Square supermarket. Coming from Mount Cook/Lake Tekapo there are supermarkets in Geraldine and Ashburton.

The Okains Bay Store is open on Friday nights from 5-7 pm for fish and chips.

The moment I stepped foot on their farm I fell in love. It is truly a special place – a home away from home. I definitely recommend it to every single person: make the opportunity to spend some on this farm. It is good for the soul. There is a multitude of activities to immerse yourself in from hiking along the headlands, paddle boarding in Oakins Bay, fishing, surfing in the adjacent bays, playing with their friendly animals, relaxing and reading a book in the meadow, yoga at sunrise on the beach….. the list is infinite. Their location is only a short and incredibly beautiful 1.5 hour drive from CHCH, perfect distance for a weekend getaway, but feels like you’re a million miles away from civilisation when you witness the stars at night. The accommodation is lovely, so homely with absolutely everything you would ever need. Will and Reagan are the most perfect hosts, such kind and polite people and make you feel right at home. I will definitely return with friends and family.

We really enjoyed or stay at the house. Everything was just perfect we made ourselves at home as soon as we entered the house. Will is a very nice person and made sure everytime if everything is alright. He is always open for a chat which made us feel very welcome. The beach is nearby and beautiful, if there is bad weather there is not much to do but there are a couple of board games, card games and books around so you don't get bored.

The guesthouse is in a beautiful setting and very comfortable. Will & Reagan were great hosts and I really enjoyed meeting their newest addition to the farm - a puppy. The space was well-equipped and we would return with the family!

The best kept secret of Banks Peninsula, or maybe even New Zealand. The house is surrounded by hills and the farm and is modern, warm, spacious, clean and well equipped. Everything was perfect and we loved the view from our bedroom. Such a perfect place to relax and unwind. We appreciated the lovely welcoming touches...fresh flowers, freshly baked sour dough, access to herbs in the veggie garden and delicious free range eggs. Reagan and Will are the perfect hosts, friendly and welcoming but the same time we had plenty of privacy. They gave us a farm tour and we even got to feed apples to friendly sheep. The drive to Okains bay is very picturesque and Okains bay has stunning beach, great hikes and amazing night sky for star gazing. We would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great off the beaten track place to visit in New Zealand. It’s definitely worth the drive from Christchurch. A must stay. We will be back!

We are a young couple with a german shepherd living on our 20-acre sheep farm in Okains Bay. We would love the opportunity to share our little slice of heaven with people looking to see a truly beautiful and unique part of New Zealand. When we're not working on the farm, we enjoy traveling, skiing, standup paddleboarding, surfing and, of course, tramping. See you soon!
