Squirrel cottage is a cosy cottage full of charm and character ..perfect for two.

Located in the small village of Thornthwaite at the foot of Whinlatter Forest Park it is 3 miles from the popular Lake District market town of Keswick.

It has spectacular mountain views across open fields and provides a peaceful place in which to relax with walking and cycling from the door.

The cottage has a log burner, underfloor heating, a fully equipped kitchen and a four poster bed.

Dogs are very welcome.

The space
The cottage is a self-contained annex to my own family home.

It sits back from the minor road that runs through the village and has its own private entrance.

Downstairs is an open plan living space with a kitchen and dining area

Upstairs is the bedroom and en-suite bathroom

At the front of the cottage is a small east facing patio that catches the morning sun. If you have a dog with you please note that this is not entirely dog secure.

Guest access
There is ample space for your vehicle in the off road gravelled parking area beside the cottage

A secure shed is available for the storage of bicycles. This is located to one side of the car park.

Other things to note
Dog owners

It is lovely to welcome guest dogs of all shapes and sizes. If you are bringing a dog please let me know when you book.

There is a charge of £20 for each dog (maximum 2) which is not included in the booking costs.

After I have accepted your booking I will send a separate request for this additional charge (1 dog = £20 and 2 dogs = £40).

If you are paying in two instalments using the ‘Pay Less Upfront’ feature you will receive this request from me after your final payment. In either case you will need to accept it to allow Airbnb to transfer the additional amount.

What to bring

To help you plan your stay, the following information may be helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

•A large bath towel and a hand towel are provided for each guest.

•Kitchen essentials include tea towels, dish cloths, washing up liquid, washing machine tablets, dishwasher tablets, tin foil, cling film, kitchen roll, tea, coffee and sugar ..all plenty to keep you going for a short break.

•For cooking, in addition to the oven, hob and microwave there is also a Crock-Pot slow cooker.

•For coffee making there is a cafetière and a Bialetti stove top express coffee maker.

•A basket of logs is provided for the log burner. Further supplies can be purchased from both garages in Keswick.

•There is no tumble drier but the cottage has an electric heated clothes airer.

Grocery deliveries

If you are short of travelling space or would prefer not to shop for provisions immediately you arrive then you might like to consider arranging a grocery delivery.

The 3 main supermarkets deliver in this area and I am very happy to receive your delivery and to make sure that all chilled items are put away in the fridge or freezer ...just turn up and your delivery will be waiting for you!

There is no charge for this service. All you need to do is let me know the time slot. Any time between 10:30 and 13:30 is most ideal.

Minimum stay varies

From Nov until the end of Mar the minimum stay is 2 nights. You can take your pick of check in and check out days.

From Apr until the end of Oct the minimum stay is 7 nights. Check in and check out are on a Saturday. At short notice I will open up the calendar for minimum stays of 2 nights if the cottage is not booked.

Location

Thornthwaite, England, United Kingdom

The quiet semi-rural location here allows you to relax and enjoy a slower pace of life without being isolated.

Whinlatter Forest Park stretches across the hillside above the village offering panoramic views and miles of fantastic walks and mountain bike trails all of which can be started from the door. It is a lovely 40 min walk up to the Whinlatter visitor centre where there is a terraced cafe.

Thornthwaite itself has a Gallery with a tea room and Bassenthwaite lakeshore is a 20 min walk.

The nearest pubs serving food (3 to choose from) are in the neighbouring village of Braithwaite (1 mile) where there is also a village shop and a cafe.

Keswick (3 miles) and Derwentwater take about 5 min by car (just over 10 min by bus).

I have been running our family owned holiday cottages in Thornthwaite near to Keswick in the Lake District since 2012. It is wonderful to be able to welcome both new and also our many returning guests to this beautiful and very special part of the Lake District. I spend as much of my free time as I can enjoying the amazing outdoors we have here and I especially love Fell walking. I volunteer regularly for the National Trust as part of the ‘Fix the Fells' team helping to repair and maintain upland footpaths across the Lake District mountains. p.s. I also love to bake and if you stay you’ll get to sample one of my freshly baked lemon drizzle cakes!
