Enchanting Wood Cutter's Cottage, located in its own private four acre ancient woodland surrounded by National Trust land; with distant sea views and a half mile walk to the coast. The woodland has an abundance of wildlife, badgers, deer, glow-worms, nuthatches, peregrines, a dormouse and a variety of very interesting flora and fauna. Guests can walk the coastal path and climb to the summit of Golden Cap with spectacular views all along the Jurassic Coast.
A paleontologists dream!

The space

The cottage is situated in a secluded natural mature garden surrounded by our own private woodland. In spring, we have spectacular bluebells, daffodils, wild garlic and primroses with rhododendrons later in the year. There’s ample outdoor seating and a BBQ area.

The cottage has log burning stoves and storage heating. The decor is traditional and cosy, the bathroom and kitchen are well-equipped and functional. No TV but Wi-Fi is available.

We have a family of badgers who come most evenings to be fed. These can be seen on YouTube by searching Filcombe Badgers.

Guests can hike along the coastal path and reach the summit of Golden Cap (191 metres high and the highest point on the South coast). There are spectacular views all along the Jurassic Coast (a designated SSSI and a UNESCO World Heritage Site). There is access to St Gabriel’s beach by challenging steps rebuilt each year by the National Trust for the adventurous! There are various sandy beaches and places of interest to suit a variety of tastes. A walk around the area surrounding Filcombe Cottage is featured in the TV series, Julia’s Walks.

Guest access

The cottage is accessed via its own private track, which crosses one field (occasionally shared with livestock).

The bathroom is located downstairs. The two bedrooms are upstairs the staircase is relatively steep and narrow but has a handrail.

Lovely secluded cottage. Stayed for 4 nights with my wife and young son. We were able to have a fire each evening and saw a single badger on 3 of the 4 nights. Walking to the coastal path and Golden Cap was lovely and direct from the woodland at the back of the cottage. No TV was a bonus as we just played scrabble instead although the wi-fi has a decent speed. Susan the owner is very good at communicating and had no issues when we'd locked the keys inside when we left. Will be staying again. :)

Wonderful peaceful setting. Photographs don't do it justice. Off the beaten track, but nearby towns easily accessible. Quirky old fashioned house - accept it for what it is - full of character and charm with cosy real fires and no tv! Will be back! Badgers visited every night.

The cottage is tucked away in a little wooded area. We saw deer, buzzards and of course the resident badger! It is perfectly secluded and private. However it is only a short walk to the coastal path and beautiful sea views. I was hoping to have the opportunity to do some walking and painting and the area is perfect for both. There is even a ruined chapel nearby that I really enjoyed painting. The walk up Golden Cap is worth it too for views both ways along the coast. It is the perfect base for a relaxing holiday.

A beautiful, comfortable cottage in a very peaceful setting. You feel fat from everyone but actually Bridport is less than 10 minutes away. Many walks straight from the house and woods for the kids to play in. It was perfect.

Hello Rosie I am so glad you enjoyed your stay at Filcombe with your children. I spent my own childhood there too. There is a little typo in your review that makes it look as if you ate too much on your holiday!! Which is allowed of course. I hope you do return one day. With Best Wishes from the badgers and Susan

A most peaceful and beautiful cottage set in an idylic location. Very private with bags of old world charm (and resident badgers), and a warm and very welcoming host. 11 out of 10!

This is a truly magical location and beautiful house with good quality outside furniture. We walked from the cottage to Golden Cap and there are numerous walks without having to get in the car. We did have bad weather but lit the wood burner and played games in the sitting room. The kitchen is well-equipped though the fridge is a little on the small side. Our granddaughters, aged 7 and 13, loved the swing, but they didn't see the badger, we put food out every night and saw it ourselves on the penultimate evening. Susan was very helpful before our trip and easy to contact.

We couldn't believe our luck when we arrived at Filcombe Cottage, it is a little paradise in the heart of breathtaking woodland and with a view of the sea. Our children (ages 10, 9 and 7) adored the garden and the swing, and the amazing fossil hunting on Charmouth beach, and at the end of long days beach combing we were very happy by the woodburner playing games and relaxing in a very cosy, old world sitting room (blissfully no TV). We felt a bit like the Waltons, it all felt very wholesome. There is a very good farm shop at the top of the road which is a bit pricey but delicious produce, and a Morrisons in nearby Bridport, which is lucky as the fridge is not huge so not worth turning up with a week's worth of food, just need to pop to the shops. We saw the badgers but not the glow worms. The kitchen was very well equipped and plenty of extra bedding in the cupboards for chilly nights, not that we had any of those. The house was warm even though it rained a lot, and there's a very generous supply of logs. There are lots of interesting books about the area and plenty of games to play. We ate out twice - once at the Clock in Seatown which was well priced, good portions for our built up hunger and perfectly tasty, nice and simple place with what seemed like local customers. Would recommend it. We also ate at Lyme Bay Pizza, which again was good for us with kids. We feel rejuvenated, it was a very happy, harmonious, properly family holiday. Thank you to Susan for sharing what must be a very special place to her, it was easy to look after and love.
