Location

Shaftesbury, United Kingdom

Shaftesbury is a charming market town perched on the highest hill in Dorset. Filled with lovely little shops, a weekend antiques market, a couple of delis, some old fashioned pubs, and some excellent little restaurants. The 12th Century abbey, with its February Snowdrop festival, is worth a visit and for Tess of the d'Urbevilles enthusiasts the Thomas Hardy Trail that leads from the centre of Shaftesbury to his cottage (past the front door of Lawn Cottage).

The cottage sits in the Blackmore Vale, one of the prettiest parts of Dorset, and is filled with wonderful, peaceful walks - including a good walk from the backdoor up to the top of Duncliffe Hill where you can see for miles around.

Not far away are several beautiful National Trust sites including: the flowery expanse of Fontmell and Melbury Downs and the Iron Age fort at Hambledon Hill. For something a little more cultured, the Palladian splendour of Stourhead is just eight miles away.
