This place is a must! It's relaxing, cosy, accessible and all the while feeling like it's 5 star quality accommodation. Duncan is a 20min drive so perfect for groceries or similar. The area is quiet with some amazingly friendly dogs. We are from the UK and this was a perfect experience of a cosy Canadian area. You can access the trans Canada trail easily, we walked from skutz Falls to lake cowichan in a day, saw a black bear and watched the tubers. Recommend a dip in the river at little beach. All this in an easy drive from the place. We just wished we booked longer here! We miss it already, thank you!!

The River Owl Retreat is very secluded and peaceful. The house is separate from the rest of the property with a nice patio, plus an outdoor bath and a shower, if you wish to indulge. Everything was exceptionally well maintained and good quality. We had wonderful sleeps in the serene bedroom. My friend loved Christy's massage in the amazing healing hut next door. Be prepared for a long, picturesque drive along the Cowichan River to get to the retreat.

Response from Christy:
Thank you for this review, Jacqueline. We are happy to know you slept well here and enjoyed the space. The drive out here does feel so far during the first drives out here! It takes us 15 mins to get to the edge of town. Thank you for staying with us.

A beautiful oasis, we loved the outdoor bath! I would prefer an outhouse over the composting toilet though. Christy was kind and helpful.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, even better than anticipated! Our stay was brief, only one night passing through, but great! We took advantage of the outdoor bathtub and it was nice and hot and a nice outdoor experience. We would just suggest an additional shower curtain for a bit more privacy. Love having all the recycling and composting options that we practice in our home and diffusing our essential lavender oil while we were there added to the zen environment. Everything that was needed, she had. We were glad that we arrived just before dark to find our way. GPS worked almost to the driveway and our backup directions from Christy were perfectly detailed. Would love to visit again sometime and take advantage of a massage or some other service Christy offer. Loved the decor and the relaxing atmosphere! Tried some of her herbal tea, it was a lovely touch! Glad we stayed at the River Owl Retreat vs a motel!! Right up our alley, could stay way longer! A dragon fly even came by to visit on our window screen for a few hours.

Response from Christy:
Thank you for sharing your experience, Sandy. I just actually bought a shower curtain for the bathtub and am putting it up pronto! Thanks for that feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed the tea and space. We put so much love into River Owl Retreat and it feels so wonderful to know people like you are really enjoying what we are offering here. It's lovely to hear about the dragonfly medicine that showed up for you too. Thanks for staying with us!

The River Owl Retreat was an oasis during the heat wave. Arriving back there after a long day in the sun was refreshing and cool. It felt like a secluded cabin in the wilderness, but in reality is a few minutes walk to the river, and close enough to get takeout from town. Christy was welcoming as were other locals, including a friendly dog who showed us around. What a hidden gem!

Response from Christy:
Thank you for this lovely review, Jocelyn. It was a pleasure hosting you both! Thank you for staying with us.
