Best of both worlds: Comfort of a hosted private home. Privacy of being on your own floor (private bathroom, separate entrance, and sitting room). Our Swiss chalet-style home is located on a quiet dirt road adjacent to the Catamount Ski Area/Adventure Park. Large deck, beautiful outdoor spaces. 10 min. from Great Barrington, 30 min. from Tanglewood, hiking trails out the back door. Guest room (queen bed and double futon) is in the lower-level walk-out.

The space

We live on the main floor; your room is on the lower level, and you will have the use of the lower level common area as well as your room and private bathroom. There are two guests rooms on this level, but they are physically at opposite ends of the downstairs, so you will have privacy and there shouldn't be any noise-bleed-through. You are also welcome to hang out on the deck, use the grill, share a story or linger over a cup of tea…. whatever floats your boat. House is built into a hill, so bedrooms are below grade (no windows, brightly lit, naturally cool in summer). The rest of the lower level is at grade with two windows and three sliding doors. Note that there is a queen bed and a double futon in this room, so two people who don't share a bed could share this room. Please let us know if you want us to lay out and make up the futon.

Interaction with guests

We'll follow your lead.
We enjoy making new friends but respect the need for privacy – and our home is ideally set up to give you the option to interact or not.
We are always willing to share our knowledge of the area. Karen has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail, so if you need to know about hiking hereabouts, just ask. David is a great cook and can point you in the direction of good restaurants and live music. We are both professional musicians and music teachers: If you're so inclined, you can join us for evening music making.

Other things to note

We invite you to join us for breakfast (8 am til 10 am). Please let us know about any allergies. We offer low-carb and vegetarian options.

Note that while Air B and B and many GPS systems insist on locating us in Great Barrington, our actual real-life physical location is 10 minutes west of Great Barrington, and three miles west of the tiny village of South Egremont, next door to Catamount Ski Area on the border of Egremont, MA and Hillsdale, NY.

Karen and David were super hosts. We really enjoyed chatting with them and their home is both beautiful (the inside and the location) and comfortable. They also supplied us with a great breakfast in the morning.

Karen was very communicative and her house was beautiful! It was close enough to downtown Great Barrington that it was an easy drive for dinner in the evening. Karen's house is secluded and beautiful - very relaxing! She is available for questions but the room is also separated enough from the main house so we didn't feel like we were intruding. She even provided breakfast in the morning. Her muffins were delicious. We will definitely be back.

Karen and David have a beautiful home quietly secluded in the woods next to Mt.Catamount. Our accommodations were exactly as described and even included a yummy breakfast. In addition to this, both of them were happy to chat over breakfast and give us some information about the Berkshires. I will definitely consider staying at their home again!

This is such a beautiful home in an amazing location, with access to trails on the doorstep, yet still convenient to local towns and amenities. The bedroom is a good size, with a private bathroom, and the bed was extremely comfortable. Karen and David were very welcoming hosts, and made me feel at home. Karen provided a great choice of breakfast food and was such a warm friendly person to chat to over coffee. I spent a very comfortable weekend there and would be happy to return!

The Berkshires are a haven for the arts and the outdoors. Our rustic home reflects our love for both; doing Air B&B allows us to share this wonderful part of the country with others. If you love skiing, hiking, music, and books, you're in the right place!

Karen is a long-distance backpacker and Appalachian Trail thru-hiker who has hiked 18,000 miles all over the world and has written 17 books. She also teaches piano (though not while you will be visiting!).

David is the lead editor at the Guitarnoise website. He teaches guitar (also mandolin, bass, banjo, ukulele, and piano), writes instructional books, and leads creative music jams.

As a travel writer who has been all over the world, Karen thinks the most important part of traveling is getting to know the locals. Hosting Air B&B when she returns to the place she has chosen to call home is a natural fit. We are happy to share our knowledge of the Berkshires with you, swap hiking tales, share a glass of wine or a cup of coffee... or leave you in peace to enjoy your private part of our home undisturbed. Just let us know!

We will be offering Air B&B experiences as well in music and hiking.

For foreign guests: We speak a little French. Not enough to claim fluency, but enough to communicate with you.
