Ski in and out, hike, or enjoy foliage from our Swiss chalet on a quiet dirt road next to the Catamount Ski Area/Adventure Park.
Best of both worlds: Comfort of a hosted home. Privacy of being on your own floor (private bathroom, queen bed + double futon). Large deck, beautiful outdoor spaces. 10 min. from Great Barrington, 30 min. from Tanglewood. This is one of 2 guest rooms that share the walk-out lower-level, with private entrance and large family room. Breakfast included.
A rare opportunity to ski-in-ski-out in the Berkshires -- or to enjoy everything else the Berkshires offer: hiking (trails right off our property), music, dining, fall foliage drives, and antique shopping. We live on the main floor; your room is on the lower level, and you will have the use of the lower level common area as well as your room. There are two guests rooms on this level, and the other may also be rented. The rooms are physically at opposite ends of the downstairs, and each has its own ensuite bathroom, so you will have privacy and there shouldn't be any noise-bleed-through. You are also welcome to hang out on the deck, use the grill, share a story or linger over a cup of tea…. whatever floats your boat. House is built into a hill, so bedrooms are below grade (no windows, brightly lit, naturally cool in summer, cozy in winter and very quiet). The rest of the lower level is at grade with two windows and three sliding doors. Note that there is a queen bed and a double futon in this room, so two people who don't share a bed could share this room. Please let us know if you want us to lay out and make up the futon.
We invite you to join us for breakfast (8 - 10 a.m.) Please let us know about any allergies. We offer a European-style buffet (bread and pastries, fruit, cheese, meat, boiled eggs, cereal, coffee, tea, oatmeal an option). Also, for a small additional fee (payable in advance through the AirBnB system) you can arrange to have a ski-lunch here at the house if you are staying the following night. Please let us know if you'd like this in advance. We offer French onion soup, tomato soup, chicken soup, hot cocoa (plus coffee and/or tea), chili, and home-made mac and cheese. Price is $15 per person.
Interaction with guests
We'll follow your lead.
We enjoy making new friends but respect the need for privacy – and our home is ideally set up to give you the option to interact or not.
We are always willing to share our knowledge of the area. Karen knows the Catamount Ski Area cold (if you'll pardon the pun), and has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail, so if you need to know about skiing and hiking hereabouts, just ask. David is a great cook and can point you in the direction of good restaurants and live music. We are both professional musicians and music teachers: If you're so inclined, you can join us for evening music making.
Other things to note
Ski in ski out is available (when Catamount Ski Area is open and snow conditions permit) to experienced skiers who sign a liability waiver and purchase lift tickets. If you prefer, you can easily walk up our road 100 yards and step directly onto the ski area. Or you can drive 1/2 mile down to the ski area's parking lot. Which ski slopes are open and whether or not you can ski right out our door depends on natural snow conditions and Catamount grooming/snow-making. Please note that we are immediately adjacent to the ski area. So on some days in the winter, when they are making snow on our side of the mountain, you may hear loud snow gun noise in the main living area. However, you will not hear the snow guns in the bedrooms because the bedrooms are completely insulated from sound.
--Please respect check in and check out times
--Breakfast is offered between 8 and 10 a.m.
--In winter, you MUST have 4 wheel or all wheel drive vehicle, or front wheel drive with snow tires,
The Berkshires are a haven for the arts and the outdoors. Our rustic home reflects our love for both; doing Air B&B allows us to share this wonderful part of the country with others. If you love skiing, hiking, music, and books, you're in the right place!
Karen is a long-distance backpacker and Appalachian Trail thru-hiker who has hiked 18,000 miles all over the world and has written 17 books. She also teaches piano (though not while you will be visiting!).
David is the lead editor at the Guitarnoise website. He teaches guitar (also mandolin, bass, banjo, ukulele, and piano), writes instructional books, and leads creative music jams.
As a travel writer who has been all over the world, Karen thinks the most important part of traveling is getting to know the locals. Hosting Air B&B when she returns to the place she has chosen to call home is a natural fit. We are happy to share our knowledge of the Berkshires with you, swap hiking tales, share a glass of wine or a cup of coffee... or leave you in peace to enjoy your private part of our home undisturbed. Just let us know!
We will be offering Air B&B experiences as well in music, skking, and hiking.
For foreign guests: We speak a little French. Not enough to claim fluency, but enough to communicate with you.
