Traditional cottage listed by English Heritage for architectural interest (original flooring, large sash windows), situated down a quiet alley (no traffic or street noise). The cottage is in Summertown, one of the most desirable residential areas, with artisan bakeries, restaurants and super markets etc. It is a 10 minute walk to the city centre. Comfortable and clean, but not new! Packed with a local family's antiques, art and books.
We have tried to keep the cottage simple and traditional, so it is full of nice period details and will appeal to guests who prefer old-world charm to modern luxury. NB this is not a modern hotel set-up, we have everything we feel we need in the house; all the appliances work but some can be a little temperamental (but we can talk you through any questions). The presentation is not slick/ professional, instead the house has been tastefully modernised without harming the character; it is exceptionally elegant with unique art works and antiques. What the cottage may lack in finesse it makes up for in originality.
Check in times: although we aim to be flexible about check-in times we might need to charge extra if you are arriving late at night (to cover the cost of hiring a baby sitter for the co-host so they can let you in)!
Upstairs sleeps four: one double bedroom with 1 x (fairly high) double bed (an original four-poster) and one single bedroom with a modern single bed that converts into two singles (via a pull-out bed stored underneath). Please note that the single bedroom is small and when the pull out bed is up there is very little space in there for anything else; something to consider if you would like to make an extended stay. We would not recommend two people sleeping in there for a long time unless they are very accommodating!
Downstairs is the living/ dining room. The living room has a sofa, television (and Wifi) and bookshelves while the dining room has an extendable dining room table and chairs.
The kitchen is well equipped with cutlery, dinnerware, basic pots and pans, microwave, gas cooker (with electric oven) fairly new dish washer and washing machine.
To the rear there is an enclosed (slightly scruffy) cottage garden which guests are welcome to use and there is also a small unused wild garden to the front where the rubbish and recycling are stored.
Guests have full access to come and go as they please during their stay.
Interaction with guests
A member of the family will be close by and can be contacted if needed urgently. Someone may drop by to mow the lawn but we can discuss that in person.
- Be careful with the upstairs windows, they open fully and could present a danger to small children.
- Do not light fires in the fireplaces please (there are flammable objects blocking the chimneys to prevent draughts).
- No stiletto heels on the wooden floors please! They damage the original (irreplaceable) floor boards.
- For cups/ drinks on antique furniture, please use coasters to save our (costly) antique polish.
- Sitting on the arms of the antique sofa is not allowed (children); it could break.
- Please comply with local rubbish/ recycling rules.
- No more than 4 guests to stay in the house.
-The cottage is an end-terrace so please do try not to be too loud/ disturb the neighbour; thank you!
