A historic 1690 Queen Anne / Georgian manor house, lovingly restored by two generations of Danish / Irish artists. Berkeley Forest House (named for the pioneering psychologist and philosopher George Berkeley) is one the oldest houses in Ireland and one of the wonders of airbnb! Sleeps ten. 20 mins to Wexford beaches and 40 mins from Hook Lighthouse.
There is an enchanting inner courtyard perfect for Al fresco dining, heavenly 60 acres of parkland to walk in, and a beautiful walled garden.
Upon arrival, you pass through the gates and woodlands and enter a magical heaven - set on a beautiful slightly raised site looking over undulating fields towards Mount Leinster and in the midst of 25 acres of parkland grazed with Jacob sheep and shaded with 200 year old beech trees, Berkeley Forest House is a haven of both serenity and relaxation.
The house is splendidly furnished with carefully considered vintage and period pieces, art works and delicately arranged displays.
There are five bedrooms.
The Peacock Room has a king size double bed (6 ft wide).
The Owl Room double bed is 4.5 ft wide and a small Queen Bed.
The Tulip Room double bed is 5 ft wide.
The Green Room double bed is 4.5 ft wide.
The Blue Room has twin single beds.
If you are fed up with homogenised hotels and want to experience life in a historic home filled with antiquities and art, then you will never want to leave.
Berkeley Forest House is highly unusual as an Irish period house because it has a strong Scandinavian flavor - painted floors, hand stenciled wallpaper and bed coverings - all designed by the artist owners who live and work here, in a separate house nearby.
There is masses of hot water, plenty of hot water bottles, electric blankets on the beds, and a vintage oil-fired Aga pumping out heat in the kitchen.
And we provide unlimited logs for roaring fires!
Outside there is a magical courtyard perfect for alfresco dining or relaxing with a bottle of wine after touring the wonders of the south east.
The long driveway and park lands are perfect for early morning or post dinner strolls and will leave you both relaxed and refreshed.
If you are looking for a pure luxury environment, this is not the house for you.
BUT, if you want charm, authenticity, a once in a lifetime experience in a magical alternate universe - then you will LOVE this house.
Please note these important caveats before you rush in and book:
This is an old, old house - one of the oldest houses in Ireland. It was built circa 1690.
Berkeley Forest House does have central heating in most of the rooms. Heat is also provided in traditional form by roaring open fires in all the reception rooms.
However it can be a little chilly in winter so we do suggest you bring warm woollies with you!
We hope the photos give you some sense of the remarkable nature of the house. It offers a truly beguiling experience.
The whole house is yours with the exception of the locked costume museum. You won't notice it. And if you want a peek, the owners live nearby (but not in the house) and will be happy to show you.
There are four double bedrooms, one twin bedroom, three bathrooms and two self-contained WCs, a wonderful dining room that seats 14, a beautiful drawing room, a magnificent staircase and a relaxed telly room.
Interaction with guests
John is the manager of the house, and always on email or phone.
The owners are on site and very friendly, happy to help with any queries.
Other things to note
Internet is available but download is limited, not suitable for gaming/ movie downloads.
The kitchen is very serviceable, with a full-size Aga stove and another electric hob / oven, but it is fairly modest in size given the splendor of the rest of the house.
