Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty with Moors to one side and the stunning North Cornwall coast on the other it’s the perfect location to explore Cornwall and Devon. Altarnun has a Post Office with general store (run by Louise your host, fresh grocerys can be delivered at no extra cost daily), art gallery and tea rooms together with a famous church known as the Cathedral on the Moor. Doc Martin filmed the wedding episode in the village church in 2014. If you're a Doc Martin fan they film it just a 20-minute drive away in Port Isaac.
There are two local pubs, one is a 15-minute walk along a quite country road the other is more of a 30-minute walk, or both a short drive if you'd rather, both serve excellent meals, local ale
, and cider.
For those who like to walk or horse ride the wild stretches of the moor are just down the road while the north coast, famous for its long sandy beaches for surfing such as Trebarwith Strand or Polzeath, are within a short drive. If you are just looking for a lazy beach day there are glorious stretches of sand all along this spectacular coastline. Quaint north coast villages such as Boscastle with its quirky harbour and Port Isaac with its narrow little streets are just asking to be explored and the south coast is also easily accessed.
Explore Bodmin Moor including spectacular Roughtor and Cornwall’s highest peak Brown Willy.
Visit Du Maurier’s infamous Jamaica Inn. The spectacular Cornwall Coastal Path is only 12 miles away.
The nearest town is the ancient capital of Cornwall, Launceston. The town dubbed the gateway to Cornwall has old narrow streets a Norman Castle and a Steam Railway. It has the usual facilities plus a leisure centre and excellent 18-hole golf course.
