I stayed one whole month at Jean-Marie's place in St Jean on Île d'Orlean. It is one of the most enjoyable vacations I have had. You will find the amenities of high-quality, the ambiance heavenly, the view and surroundings very beautiful. The Fleuve St Laurent (river) you can gaze at for hours at a time. You wake up seeing it from the master bedroom. The level of the water changes through the day due to the tide, very curious! Large ships pass frequently though never disturbingly. This two story cottage is decorated in very fine pine wood with a large-stone fireplace, AC and central heat. The pictures are very accurate. The main living room is enclosed by glass sliding doors which can be opened to let a substantial breeze flow through. Wonderful wrap-around deck with 2 upper balconies. Very comfortable couches, large screen tv. The village of Saint Jean, 10 minutes away by foot, is very quaint with very friendly, easy-going people. For non-francophones, command of the French language is not necessary but it helps and it's fun to try. Everyone happily says 'bonJOUR' in passing! For shopping, most of which you will need daily can be purchased at the local store (Dépanneur), but for a big shopping spree ( a month stay) you will have to leave the island towards Beauport or Quebec City, but that's part of the adventure! I recommend Metro food stores. The island is very rich in heritage with the local people producing art, crafts, wine, maple syrup and agricultural products. A trip around the whole island is highly recommended with stops in the villages as you go. There are many restaurants here and there as well as some fast food places. Great restaurants in Saint Laurent and Saint Petronille! A road called Route du Mitan cuts through the middle of the island and is a wonderful exposé of the landscape. You must check this out. Walking along the river is a daily pleasure. One must be careful with the rocky terrain that covers most of the beach around the cottage. Ancient bedrock appears vertically positioned producing an artwork unto itself! A sandy beach can be reached within 15 minutes walking. At times the tide can reach the road in front of the cottage, so long walks should be taken with the tide in mind for your return. The hosts, Jean-Marie and Carole, are a most gracious couple, forever concerned about your comfort and welfare. The only bad thing about staying at this cottage is having to leave!
