Furry friends welcome

Bring your pets along for the stay.
Stay in our romantic original Shepherd’s Hut, nestled in a peaceful green valley by a babbling brook. Enjoy a perfect view of life at Cotna Eco Retreat – chickens, organic gardens and hedgerow rustlings.
A short step across the stream is your kitchen hut, fitted out with all the provisions and equipment you need for cooking, either in the hut or on the BBQ provided. The shower sheds are nearby with hot water and you have your own pretty posh compost loo.

The space
A secluded location in a private valley, an inspirational place to connect with the environment, to retreat, restore & revitalise. There are organic vegetable & fruit gardens where you can pick your own produce. We can provide delicious food hampers with free-range eggs & sourdough bread for breakfast or Italian & Indian hampers for evening meals.

We have won 'Best Contribution to Sustainable Land Management' at the Cornwall Sustainability Awards, so come and see how we maintain Cotna Eco Retreat as an abundant oasis for both wildlife and humans alike.

We are within walking distance from the sea and the peaceful local beaches, just down the road from The Lost Gardens of Heligan and Eden Project. The bus from St Austell Station brings you to the village at the end of our track where we can meet you and where there is an excellent local pub & village shop. Down through our woodland is Portmellon where you can get great coffee and food at The Shack or hire kayaks and paddle-boards.

All our visitors find Cotna a unique and beautiful place to find what you need and connect with yourselves - the hidden location, the warm & friendly welcome, the peaceful environment and the inspirational projects which make it "a hidden jewel of the Cornish countryside."

In order to comply with countryside planning policy, we operate our property as a Greener Camping Club members-only destination. The £12 membership fee is included in the accommodation price. If you are already a member the fee will be refunded to you upon arrival.

Sara Readman-Smyth Sara was a teacher, trainer and examiner of EFL / ESOL in London before she came to Cornwall. She has travelled extensively in both Europe & Asia, particularly in South India. She has always loved contact with other cultures through work and travel, and has integrated this into life at Cotna through her overseas links and interest in international cuisine. She has also brought a reflective side to life at Cotna through yoga, meditation and encouraging the use of the studio for solitary retreats. She is a Homoeopath, has trained in Ayurveda and teaches Dyslexic students at Falmouth University. Life as a smallholder has been very new to her, but she has particularly taken to the sowing and growing of seeds, as well as developing the Artisan bread-making and cooking side of things – mainly because she loves eating! Dave Readman Dave has spent his life in the West country and trained as a Plant Biochemist at Bath University. He has mainly worked in the field of conservation and ecology and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of plants! He has trained many young people over the years in countryside skills and woodland management, and more recently has been working with older volunteers on walking and cycling for health and fitness schemes. He is a homoeopath and an ardent plantsman, gardener and composter! He loves growing and eating food and being in the woods coppicing and harvesting fuel-wood. He says it’s all about moving healthily, eating well, keeping warm and dry and knowing how to get well when it goes wrong!
