Zahra keeps the place very tidy and by reading the full house manual, there is nothing left out, everything is truthful and very detailed. Zahra is a great host as she will answer any questions necessary. In a great location, especially if you love walking around to get to the Byward market, perfect little spot!

We had a good stay at Zahra's appartment. The appartment itself was pretty spacious for the price we paid and all the necessary facilities were there. We didn't meet Zahra herself, but this wasn't any problem because of the accurate communication of her beforehand. The neighborhood itself isn't very inspirating, but downtown Ottawa and Byward Market are in walking distance. My conclusion is that this appartment is great for it's price.

Long story short, we left after one night even though we rented the unit for nine days. Here are the facts. The listing indicated "free parking on site," but after booking, the house information said parking was $10/day. We brought that up and Zahra told us that Airbnb had "made a mistake," and she then asked us to pay $5/day. The unit is near Ottawa University but was billed as "downtown." It is, however, a reasonable walking distance to several interesting sites in the city, and all the basics seemed to be provided and in order. When we arrived, Zahra was thankfully available by phone to help us straighten out the incorrect lockbox/key information we had been provided. There was construction going on across the street about which we had not been informed. The 3 Glade Plug-ins running and 3 Airwicks placed throughout the four-room unit permeated it with a very strong perfumed scent that turned out to be a migraine trigger within moments of entering. The only washroom is located in the basement down very steep, narrow, and uneven stairs with no railing. The ceiling is very low in the basement washroom - someone 6 feet tall or over might find the tub shower cramped. There was a very strong musty odor in the basement and there was a portable dehumidifier running that filled twice, and which we emptied, in the few hours we were there. It was uncomfortably warm and much more humid inside than outside the place; there were loud portable fans provided in each of the bedrooms that we found necessary to run all night which did help with the temperature, somewhat. My son injured his foot on a sharp tile floor ledge while going to empty the dehumidifier. When we informed Zahra that we would be checking out on the second day, she offered to send a handyman to install a portable AC unit, but told us it would be expensive for her to do so. Because an AC unit would not solve our other issues with the place, the most concerning of which were the steep bathroom access and unpleasant smells, we declined the offer and found a different place to stay for the remainder of our visit.

Response from Zahra:
Hi Lara, I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us. I do believe that all of these issues would have been avoided had you actually read the information provided in this listing and looked at the pictures prior to booking the unit. It became apparent that you had booked without reading anything or looking through the pictures as all of your major concerns would have been quickly met. To address each of your points: 1. Parking: When you complained that airbnb told you that parking was included, I took you for your word and offered you a 50% discount (trying to be a nice host). When this did not appear to please you I said I would eat the costs and offer you FREE parking for your stay - on me! :) (trying to be a super nice host!) You said no its fine and you would be willing to pay 50%. I am therefore surprised that you are upset about it again when you passed on my offer to waive it. This would all have been avoided if you had read the first paragraph of our listing's description. It clearly states that parking is not included and is an extra fee. Other guests in this listing have often messaged me when they book requesting to pay the parking fee and reserve a spot. It is clear you did not read the first paragraph of the listing. 2) The washroom: Again it is apparent that you did not read the first paragraph of the listing that says the washroom is in the basement. I have ALSO posted detailed pictures with descriptions explaining the basement washroom (as seen in Images 12, 13, and 14). I was therefore shocked to hear from you as soon as you checked in that "the washroom is downstairs?? I did not know this!" I am really not sure how much clearer I can make it? We have no intention of fooling or misleading our guests and have made it clear that the bathroom is in the basement. 3) Air Conditioning (AC): you also mentioned in your call you were shocked that there was no AC. Again, this should not have come as a surprise as its stated in the first paragraph that there is no AC. AC is also not listed as an amenity under the AIRBNB search. (so if you had checked off AC in your search our home would not have come up). As you mentioned, we provide fans in the rooms. However, after you complained about this, since we try our best to be good hosts and please our guests, we called our handyman to go and buy an AC and install it (despite the few hundred dollar cost). But then you stated that this would not solve your problem and you wanted to leave. This was confusing to us as it seemed this was a big deal for you. (Since we had already called our handyman before your decline, he had already purchased the AC, and we have since had it installed.) 4. The Location - I am not sure how these things are determined in your hometown, but in Ottawa, the neighbourhoods of Sandy Hill, Byward Market, and Centretown are considered to be a part of downtown. If you did not feel that Sandy Hill was a part of downtown (fair enough!) you should probably have looked for listing in whichever area you feel *is* downtown. 5. Construction - I am surprised to hear of this complaint. From your comment I am not sure if you were upset by construction noise or the fact that you weren't informed that there was construction going on at a neighbours house? All 7 units in this building have had Airbnb guests all summer, and not a single other guest has complained in the comments or directly to me that there was construction noise, or more specifically that they weren't 'informed there was construction on a house on the street"?? 6. Air Freshner - I am very sorry that the Airfreshners caused you to get migraines. However you state there were 6 (SIX?!) Airfreshners plugged in - this is simply false. We had one plugged in upstairs and one downstairs. This is due to us trying to make the home smell nicer (we use it in our own home!) and previous guests commenting that they enjoyed the fresh smell. But it did not occur to us that it could cause other guests migraines. We are sorry for this and have taken your comment to heart. We removed all of the air fresheners and plugged them in our own home ;) :) 7. Dehumidifier - the Dehumidifier is usually not 'included' in the unit. This came about again as we were trying to be nice hosts. You unfortunately visited us during a spell of high humidity in Ottawa. We noticed this first in our own basement at home (our house is 30 minutes away). Basements in Ottawa can gets stuffy and humid when the humidex goes up (a natural occurrence in Ottawa). We then thought "hey maybe the basement at our listing will get humid too". So we went out and bought a brand new dehumidifier for the unit just incase it got humid there too. (You will note there are no other comments on the humidifier prior to your stay). We thought the next guest (you) would appreciate the extra effort we had gone through to ensure the stay would be comfortable :) I'm very sorry to hear that our effort to be more accommodating has been interpreted so negatively. In conclusion, I would highly recommend to you in the future when you want to book an airbnb to actually READ listings and look through pictures before booking. It would save both yourself and your host a great deal of hassle and headaches.

I stayed at Zahra's place with my mother a couple of weeks ago. The apartment was clean and fit our needs for the 2 nights we were there. I slept in the smaller of the two bedrooms and was very comfortable. The apartment is in a quiet neighborhood, only a few minutes walk to downtown, shopping, restaurants, etc.
