This property is situated on the banks of the Saugeen River in the town of Durham. Guests will have full use of the 1 1/2 story bungalow, landscaped lot and private beach area. A short stroll up the street takes you to McGowan's Falls and access to the Durham Conservation Area, with its public beaches and hiking trails. The Durham Art Gallery is a stone's throw away, as are public tennis and basketball courts.

The space

The house is quite bright and well-maintained. The kitchen, three bedrooms, bathroom and dining/living room are all located on the main floor. Downstairs, guests will find a games room, a family room and a second bathroom. Access to the garage is restricted.

The kitchen contains a fridge, stove and dishwasher and is stocked with the usual cookware including plates, cutlery and (perhaps most importantly) a coffee maker. There is usually a bottle or two of wine kicking around. There is also a gas barbecue right outside the kitchen door.

The yard and deck areas are very private and the many mature trees on the property offer visitors lots of shade.

Guest access

Guests will have full run of the property, other than the garage/shop area.

A paddle boat, a canoe (* editor's note: our canoe is showing its age and is under repair at the moment..) and a kayak are all available at no charge. If you're lucky enough, you may catch your breakfast in the river. There is a fire pit in the backyard with 1-2 days' of supplied wood and directions for more.

While you will want to be relaxing by the river, the house does have free wifi, air conditioning and a full compliment of satellite tv channels.

Interaction with guests

We are airbnb'ers ourselves and know the value of good communication. Your hosts can be reached by cell, text or email and we will endeavour to respond to any questions or concerns immediately. Other than that, our job is to stay out of your hair and to let you enjoy the property.

Other things to note

Durham is a quiet and friendly community, nestled on the Saugeen River and within easy striking distance of the Beaver Valley, Sauble Beach and the Bruce Trail.

It is a great destination in which to slow down, reflect and unwind. Durham, as well as many of the neighbouring towns and villages, boasts a thriving arts and crafts scene, and there are many galleries and shops for you to explore.

Our family had a great time at Dan's home. It was well stocked with everything you need and more. We especially liked that we were allowed to bring our two small dogs. Highly recommended.

Once again I find myself writing a perfect review for Carrie and Dan's place. This is a repeat visit for me; this time with my 2 sisters (last time we had our family of 5 and 2 dogs!). The place is perfectly situated on the very placid Saugeen river amongst beautiful surroundings/scenery. Per usual, communication with Dan was awesome and check in/out a breeze. Dan & Carrie provide more than everything you need for a vacation stay at their place. Everything is perfectly clean (including the beach and water) and comfortable even in 40 degree weather :-) They also provide wood for the firepit and the use of their paddleboat and kayaks. Perfect hosts and place to stay. We will be back again and again in various family combinations since the place is big enough for all of us!

Lovely view of the water and a great location for sightseeing in the area as it is easy driving distance to Kincardine, Owen Sound, Collingwood etc. Very warm welcome from Dan and the house had everything we needed in the way of supplies.

Carrie & Dan are fantastic hosts! The place is even better than the pictures and offers so many activities that we couldn't do them all in one weekend. Carrie & Dan put in a great effort to make us feel welcome and comfortable and were always a phone call away if we needed anything. The house was very clean and had everything we needed to make cooking easy and our sleeps comfortable, we just needed to bring the food and drinks. We were pleasantly surprised that there was a BBQ as it was not mentioned in their ad. The property is big and the back yard is stunning, half of our group played Bocci ball (provided by them) while the other half was throwing around a football and we still had room for other activities. The house offers everything that you see in the pictures and then some. The river was always calm and felt more like a lake due to its size. The water was very clean and it was easy to take the canoe up to the picturesque dam or to go swimming. We were fortunate to have great weather so we spent most of the day outside but the living room faces the water and you always have a stunning view even if you are inside. The Town is so charming and the people are very nice, I recommend taking a walk. Overall we were very pleased with everything and would definitely visit again. Thanks again Carrie & Dan, you were amazing!

Heron’s Perch deserves every one of the five star reviews that it has received. We had a terrific stay and would go back in a heartbeat! We highly recommend this beautiful home and the super responsive hosts. This warm and welcoming home has everything you could ask for – and much more. It is located in an idyllic setting on the serene and picturesque Saugeen river. The home is lovingly furnished with a beautiful view of the river from the living room, deck and backyard. It has lots of activities/games to keep you busy - not that you’ll have much time! A short walk takes you to McGowan falls and the nearby conservation area. Stand on the bridge above the falls and treat yourself to an absolutely stunning view of the Saugeen River or enjoy roasting marshmallows in the fire pit at nights There’s lots to do in the area – tubing, tennis, nature walks. The home is also a perfect base from which to visit the lovely towns and beaches of Port Elgin and Southampton. My husband and I visited with our two daughters (15 and 21) and our Golden Retriever and we all absolutely loved it. Dan was a great host. He responded promptly to all queries, greeted us upon arrival and was available for any questions that we had. Thanks again for a wonderful stay. We look forward to visiting again!

It has been a great experience right from the day of booking the property until we checked out. Both Carrie and Dan have been very responsive to all our queries before and during the trip. Carrie was kind enough to show us around this beautiful home and was just a msg away for anything we needed. Extremely kind and helpful. The house itself is located by a beautiful lake, with one of the most scenic views ever. Grand furnishing and with all amenities better than any hotel could provide. We enjoyed every bit of our stay there. The house is big enough to accommodate 6 adults. We had two toddlers as well and they had had great fun. restaurants, convenience stores, lcbo are all at walkable distance. Great spot for a family vacation. Just sit back and enjoy this serene environment! Certainly one of the best and value for your money! Thanks Carrie and Dan!
