About this listing

Roving rural vintage vehicular chic!
Martha, the 'Roving Studio' classic Bedford J-type truck has had an adventurous life of travels, and pauses to give you peace of authentic off-roading! - The charm of her double doors and tailgate offering up a new view on the world…
This year she's at one of her favourite Cotswold spots on the beautiful Westley Farm. Here you can ruminate in a hay field with glorious bird-soaring views along the golden valley, under the hosting care of Fireside Glamping.

The space

A cosy, quiet space with such a grand view, Martha makes a good retreat for writing, drawing, composing, musing, or simply being; a launch pad to explore Westley Farm’s 75 acres, Cotswold hills and Stroud valleys beyond. Simple living of carry water, chop wood, with comfort of a few on-board or nearby mod cons.

Martha is at the top end of a hay field that slopes down to the valley, parked nose-on to the farmyard where you can park your car. A farmyard building provides nearby toilet, washing and cooking facilities. The field is gated and has public footpath. Occasionally cows are grazing in the field. At these times, Martha's vicinity is fenced with electric fence and access is down stepped wall.

Water - a kitchen unit with a small Belfast sink is fed by a foot pump, drawing water from a container under the truck. This you can refill from the nearby mains tap. Drinking water should be collected directly from the same tap. There is an electric kettle and toaster, teas and coffee, and equipment enough to prepare your breakfast/picnic. Cook on the fire outside or in the farmyard building communal kitchen.

Wide wooden steps lead up to the tailgate and double entrance doors - a great place to soak up the views and the south to setting sun. Outside there is a table and chairs, circular fireplace and BBQ equipment in a bellybox under the truck. Also kept outside is a small cool box, and box for wellies or walking boots.

Firewood – There is some firewood included in the booking price and if you run out we can provide well-seasoned and dry firewood for a small charge. We manage the woodlands carefully for the wildlife and don’t allow guests to cut their own from the forest. We can provide unsplit wood and a small axe if you like splitting your own logs and kindling.

Electric hook-up allows for charging low-wattage devices, and powers lights and an infra-red heater for instant heating. Wifi is available in the farmyard building.

Guest access

Toilet, washing and cooking facilities are within a building just across the farmyard. The kitchen has a large dining table, fridge, gas cooker with 5 hobs and 2 ovens, microwave oven & toaster. There are coin-operated washing and drying machines here too.

Just off the farmyard and field there is a grassy gated area with flowerbeds, washing line, pergola, tables and chairs, large barbecue and a wood fired pizza oven. All of these facilities are available to Martha's guests, and to the 2 “Sheek Shacks” on the farm (which are situated further down the fields in glades and have off-grid facilities of their own).

Westley Farm has 75 acres of gorgeous land to roam, and is home to the famous Chalford donkeys.

Interaction with guests

Piers will meet you on arrival and make sure you are settled before leaving you to enjoy the calm and tranquility of your stay.

Other things to note

Set on Cotswold hills above the village of Chalford, Westley Farm has rich biodiversity, outstanding beauty and a long history of being loved and visited by many for special events and holidays to 5 self-contained holiday cottages.
Fireside Forest School, also based on the Farm, was initiated by Piers your host, to share a love and skills of outdoor living with woodland ecology. Fireside Glamping is an offshoot from this, with 2 “Sheek Shacks”hidden further away in woodland clearings through the fields. The “Sheek Shacks” and Martha share access to the communal facilities in the farmyard buildings adjoining the field where Martha is parked.

Martha has been lovingly restored over the years and recently redesigned inside by owner/artists Tara & Bart. (You’ll find more about Martha’s life & times on her bookshelf) She will appear at different locations each year.
