All about Mike’s place

Garden level 2 bedroom suite with its own private entrance. The suite has a bright, newly updated kitchen and a cozy den. Located in the heart of Kitsilano with free street parking. A friendly and inviting neighbourhood, perfect for visiting UBC, or as a home base for a holiday. Lots of parks nearby and a walk to Kits beach. Bus stop steps away - bus to UBC in 25 mins, drive in 15 mins. Downtown in 22 minutes, a 30 min drive to the airport. My suite is on the ground level of a heritage house.

The space
The suite has a newly renovated kitchen that’s the brightest room, with windows to the front garden. My bedroom is the largest of the two, with a queen bed and I’ve cleared some space in the closet and drawers for guests. My second bedroom is handy for visitors; it also has a queen bed but the room is smaller and the ceiling is a bit lower so it’s pretty cozy as you can see in the photo. The den has comfy couches and a TV, great for watching sports.

My space is in the heritage house I grew up in so I’m used to the idiosyncrasies of living in a place built in 1912 and renovated over the years. When our house was built, it was in a row of homes built for railway employees - compared to some countries it might not be considered old but in Vancouver is was one of the early ones.

I love the location, being able to walk to the beach in a few minutes, everything I need is within six blocks so I walk a lot. There’s a bus stop a few steps up the street that takes you downtown. I used to go to UBC and to get there, it’s a 10 or 15 minute drive or I just jumped on a bus on Broadway or West 4th, buses on both go to UBC. A cab to the airport is a flat rate of $28.

This is my home so you’ll find food in the cupboards and in the fridge. I try to make sure I have basics like salt, pepper, sugar - feel free to check the cupboards if there’s something you need. You’re also welcome to help yourself to coffee and tea to get you started.
A Safeway grocery story is about five minutes up the street, it’s on West Broadway just around the corner from Macdonald St. There’s a Starbucks in the Safeway, another one across the street at the corner of West Broadway and Stephens and lots of other coffee shops, greengrocers, bars, cafes and restaurants along West Broadway. If you turn right when you leave my place and go down to West 4th, you’ll find interesting restaurants like the Naam, Vancouver’s iconic vegetarian restaurant that’s been around since 1968.

Kitsilano has been known as little Greece because it was a favoured destination in the city for Greek immigrants; it has some great Greek restaurants and an annual Greek Festival in June.

Kitsilano is a popular part of the city for everyone from students, because of its proximity to UBC, to families and retirees. It’s bordered on the north by English Bay, so there are lots of beaches, from famous Kitsilano Beach with its saltwater pool, beach volleyball and beachfront restaurant, to smaller beaches that come and go with the tide like the one at the foot of our street, where mostly the locals gather for sunsets and walking their dogs. Every summer, there’s a Celebration of Lights fireworks show in English Bay. This summer it takes place on three nights over a week starting July 28, then August 1 and August 4. Granville Island Market is 10 minutes by car or you can take a leisurely walk to Kits Beach and along the seawall to get there.

My place is right by several bike routes, including ones to Stanley Park and downtown. You can also bike along Point Grey on dedicated bike lanes all the way to Spanish Banks beach and if you’re up to cycling the hill, keep going to UBC for a circle tour.

I’m usually reachable by phone or message if you have any questions and for times when I’m away fishing or sailing and off the grid, one of my family is around to help.

I hope you enjoy staying in my place.

Where you’ll be

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Vancouver constantly tops or comes close to the top of the rankings as one of the best places to live in the world and one of the best places to visit. And Kitsilano is a gem of a neighborhood in this city. Beautiful English Bay borders one side, the University of BC is a bus ride away and downtown is within easy reach. I never have to get in the car to get anything - everything from Safeway to sushi is a few minutes walk. West 4th and Broadway Avenues are the main streets through the area and we're easy walking distance to both.
