Situated in the heart of Alton this charming apartment from the 19th Century offers commodious living space in a classical style. Perfect for a long weekend or week's retreat, we have a wood burning stove, well equipped Kitchen, two Living Rooms & two Bedrooms, (a master and a double) with a Victorian Panopticon on top! Perfect for two couples, friends traveling together, single guests. If you want to experience Jane Austen's town in the style to which she was accustomed, we can accomodate you!

The space

Please note it is a 20 minute level walk to the nearby village of Chawton where the Jane Austen house & museum is situated.

A very spacious apartment with lots of living space and a wood burning stove - perfect for a couple and space for 4 (should you need it). Of particular note - the second bedroom can be screened off by closing double doors - leaving a bedroom and private sitting room each!

Guest access

The small courtyard garden is owned by the downstairs property - we have access to enter, and, if it's sunny, often enjoy a coffee on the bench (!)

Interaction with guests

We are available by phone and text if needed and like to greet guests in person to say a friendly hello where possible. If we are not nearby (or you'd like to check in flexibly) we can leave a key and will be accessible by phone should you need us. Most people love to explore by themselves - but we are very happy to support and provide local info when needed.

Other things to note

We do not currently have a TV, just like Jane Austen (!)

We are a no shoes household - shoes and boots can be left in the tiled entrance hallway. There are coat hooks here too - helpful for any wet or muddy gear!

This is a refurbished flat with mainly original wooden floorboards - we absolutely love them (they lend great character to this lovely Grade II listed building) but like in lots of old Victorian houses there is the occasional rough board. Please be careful of your feet, - it's for this reason we don't allow crawling infants, We often walk around barefoot though!

We are in a town centre location and live directly above an office. The courtyard outside (through which you enter the building) belongs to them. Please be mindful to consider our neighbours working downstairs between 8am - 6pm. Like in many old buildings, sound travels very effectively between the wooden floors! Having said that, normal living is totally fine. The flat feels extremely private and cosy and once you're inside feels like a detached house, so we try hard to remember it's not!
Please just use the same care for neighbours you would at home :)

Log burner
We are happy for guests to use this in colder weather, logs are stored outside under the external stairs and you should find firelighters, kindling etc. by the hearth. Please keep the stove door fully closed (preferable) or fully open, leaving it ajar burns the fire rope, apparently! So says Barry our stove installer, who installed this lovely stove one frosty December, whilst wearing shorts! Just use the same care you would at home, both for fire safety, and shorts wearing :)

The flat is gorgeous and much more spacious than I anticipated. Well done situated for nice pubs, walks, bus & train station. Andrew and Christina were responsive and very thoughtful.

This apartment is a design delight. It is large, very comfortable and well appointed. My hosts were very helpful when I was booking, on arrival and during my stay. They made me feel very welcome - I was a lone traveller - and left me more than expected for breakfast (with additional goodies). Everything was good quality. The location was perfect for walking to Jane Austen's house and there is an excellent Indian restaurant/takeaway over the road. I loved staying in such a beautiful apartment and would certainly go again if in the area.

Beautiful and elegant space, very restful and lovely little touches, including leaving us some breakfast things. The cupola was great, as was the cozy log fire. The hosts were very friendly, and told us of a lovely pub which we walked to along a country road and had a great meal. Only thing to note is that it is in the town and as expected, the street can be a bit noisy in the evening. The interior of the apartment far outweighs this and I would definitely stay again.

We had a lovely stay in Alton. The flat was spacious and beautifully decorated, and Andrew and his girlfriend went out of their way to be helpful and welcoming (even providing welcome groceries that took into account our dietary requirements). It was very handily located in the town centre and only a half-hour walk from Jane Austen's house. Highly recommended!

I was relocating to the area with work and was looking for some accommodation that could help me get settled in a new area. This apartment was just what I wanted! Its a very stylist, clean and spacious and you cant ask for a better host/hostess (Andrew and Chrissie are amazing and made me feel very welcome...) The apartment has everything you can ask for, its a little gem and I would recommend it to anyone... It has so much character (traditional Victorian feel), it has a beautiful bathroom with a lovely warm shower and fluffy towels, lovely comfortable bed and a fully operational kitchen. There is also many snugs / relaxing areas within the apartment, where you can read a book/work from home! I'm so happy I found this apartment, as its made my move a lot easier!

This is possibly the nicest airbnb I've stayed in! Didn't actually meet Andrew but he was very responsive and helpful in our communication. Flat is absolutely fabulous, decor is amazing, beds are comfy and it's close to shops, pubs and restaurants. Flat was immaculately clean and a basket of essentials was left for us which was a lovely touch. Would 100% stay here again!
