Situated in the heart of Alton this charming apartment from the 19th Century offers commodious living space in classical style. We have a wood burning stove, well equipped Kitchen, two living rooms and two bedrooms with a Victorian Panopticon on top! If you want to experience Jane Austen's town in the style to which she was accustomed then we can accomodate you.
Please note it is a 20 minute level walk to the nearby village of Chawton where the Jane Austen house & museum is situated.
A very spacious apartment with lots of living space and a wood burning stove - perfect for a couple and space for 4 (should you need it). Of particular note - the second bedroom can be screened off by closing double doors - leaving a bedroom and private sitting room each!
The small courtyard garden is owned by the downstairs property - we just have access to enter, and if it's sunny enjoy a coffee on the bench (!)
Interaction with guests
We are available by phone and text if needed and like to greet guests in person to say a friendly hello where possible. If we are not nearby we can leave a key and will be accessible by phone should you need us. Most people like to explore by themselves but we are happy to support and provide local info if needed.
Other things to note
We do not currently have a TV, just like Jane Austen (!)
Absolutely no smoking please
We are a no shoes household - shoes and boots can be left in the tiled entrance hallway. There are coat hooks here too - helpful for any wet or muddy gear!
This is a refurbished flat with mainly original wooden floorboards - we absolutely love them (they lend great character to this lovely Grade II listed building) but like in lots of old Victorian houses there is the occasional rough board. Please be careful of your feet, - it's for this reason we don't allow crawling infants, We often walk around barefoot though!
We are in a town centre location and live directly above an office. The courtyard outside (through which you enter the building) belongs to them. Please be mindful to consider our neighbours working downstairs between 8am - 6pm. Like in many old buildings, sound travels very effectively between the wooden floors! Having said that, normal living is totally fine. The flat feels extremely private and cosy and once you're inside feels like a detached house, so we try hard to remember it's not!
Please just use the same care for neighbours you would at home :)
We are happy for guests to use this in colder weather, logs are stored outside under the external stairs and you should find firelighters, kindling etc. by the hearth. Please keep the stove door fully closed (preferable) or fully open, leaving it ajar burns the fire rope, apparently! So says Barry our stove installer, who installed this lovely stove one frosty December, whilst wearing shorts! Just use the same care you would at home, both for fire safety, and shorts wearing :)
