How you will feel about this apartment will depend on what is important to you and your tolerance for the noise of an extended family. Gamini, without any doubt, is the kindest, most helpful, and intelligent host one could ever hope for. He truly wants you to enjoy the apartment and Colombo and does everything he can to help it happen. He is simply a wonderful person. The apartment is spacious, well equipped, comfortable, and located in a beautiful part of Colombo within walking distance of stores, restaurants, and attractions. It is an easy 250 rupee tuktuk ride to go to the centre. My husband and I stayed a total of five weeks in the apartment in four and one week segments separated by a month of travel around Sri Lanka. We enjoyed the neighbourhood, Colombo as a whole, our interactions with Gamini, and the the overall comfort and facilities of the apartment. The big “however” is that the apartment is part of a larger house, and continues to be closely connected to it such that one shares the noise of daily life in the whole building. At this stage, this includes energised young children (crying, yelling, slamming doors, etc), parents and grandparents interacting with them, and the larger of the two dogs (a Rhodesian Ridgeback) barking loudly (we felt a bit intimidated even though she is described as just excited). In addition, the most inviting part of the apartment is the bedroom, with a nice seating area looking out at the lovely green garden through sliding glass doors. The “however” here is that a standard interior-type door links the apartment to the rest of the house, which makes this the noisiest part of the apartment. With kids, the noise begins early. Also, maybe it’s just our own personalities, but we sometimes felt quite uncomfortable sitting in the bedroom with the drapes open as playing kids ran by the sliding doors looking at us or other family members used the back garden to do normal things like hanging clothes or watering plants. We were physically connected to the back, but we were very conscious that it was not part of our space. There are ways to improve the sound issues, but they would involve expense and would not work perfectly. And of course a family is obviously allowed to enjoy its home as it wishes — kids are kids, and some dogs are big and bark loudly. We were at the apartment longer than most people normally stay, and other guests will have their own levels of sensitivity. We just wanted to make people aware of the wonderful elements of a stay here and those potential “howevers.”

Response from Gamini:
We will remedy the issue of noise shotly. Tranquility has different connotations: Tranquillity is the quality or state of being tranquil; that is, calm, serene, and worry-free but to an assortment of policy and planning guidance documents, where interpretation of the word is typically linked to engagement with the natural environment.

Gamini is a very caring and thoughtful host, and it is clear that he enjoys hosting people and sharing his stories. I really appreciated having the basics in the fridge, and shared fruits as there are no shops easy to find close by, it is very residential, but near enough to get to some of the interesting sights by 3-wheeler easily caught on the main road. I enjoyed staying away from the busy tourist areas. And Gamini was kind enough to let me use his bike, which you can ride comfortably in that area. It was a bit tough for my taxi driver to find the place in the dark (note the street name is no longer called Gregory's road on the street signs) but Gamini made sure to give the driver directions over the phone, and signaled with a flashlight at the end of his lane. The kitchen has all you need, but the place does need a good deep cleaning. I don't like to shine a negative light, but I think its valuable for future guests to be aware that this isn't really a separate house, yes it is private and has its own entrance, but it is part of a large family house, and the noise carries as if you are sharing the same living space. I am a night person and was looking forward to sleeping in and for some 'tranquility' but this was not possible, even with earplugs. In mornings the kitchen and loud children sounds start as early as 5am, and it is literally on the other side of the wall from your bed. Also be very careful if you are afraid of dogs. My patio door was left unlocked by accident on the first night when I was introduced to the dog (a Rhodesian ridgeback), and one night it managed to paw open the door itself and I awoke to it standing beside my bed at 3am! I do love dogs, but this gave me a real scare in the night! I had to carefully shoo it out and lock the door- it then barked like crazy waking the whole neighborhood I'm sure. This dog will bark quite aggressively at you through the patio doors when it sees you, I dont think it means harm, but something to be aware of-- Make sure your patio door always stays locked. Being embedded in the sites and sounds of a large family home was new to me coming from a life of solitude, so I feel like I got the 'real life' local experience. I need a lot of sleep, so I likely won't stay again, but if not for that I would definitely go back and stay, you couldn't find a kinder host than Gamini!

a really spacious, ground floor flat in the embassy area of Colombo, so the neighbourhood is quiet, green, and leafy. squirrels, birds, and fruit bats patrol the area. there might seem like nothing around, but really you're not too far from some great restaurants and bars. the flat is more like a home-stay, so the total opposite of the hotel experience. it's comfortable with all you might need, but there is 100% privacy too. Gamini is there to help a lot, at least with useful tips on Colombo, and fresh fruit and vegetables from his garden. this is a place to get a sense of living in Colombo that you might not get from a hotel.

Gamini' s place offers much more than you can expect for the price. He has with great precision taken care of every detail. Most importantly: airco, wifi and tv are 100% ok. Dog and children? Occasionally you hear something. But no problem at all. Recommended to all travellers.

I booked Mr Gamini's place because of its central location. The house is set in the midst of the diplomatic area and therefore the locality is safe and sound. The directions provided were to the mark and I had no issues checking in. I was given a brief tour by Mr Gamini to get acquainted with the house and surrounding. He has gone to great lengths to ensure the comfort of his guests by providing all the necessary goods ranging from snacks, cutlery to stationery. He was very responsive to messages and flexible to changes. I would definitely stay at his place if I come back to Colombo

My friend and I stayed here for 2 weeks while doing a placement at a Hospital nearby. It was a lovely, clean, well thought out apartment. The apartment was also had air-conditioning in both the living room and bedroom, both of which are much more spacious than the photos suggest. The host, Gamini, was very helpful while still giving us space to live separately. while still being respectful of our own privacy. If you are a light sleeper and want to sleep in, this may not be the place for you as he does look after his grandchildren and have a dog and both can be boisterous at times during the day. This didn't bother us in the slightest and the location was awesome! Good cafes, bars, supermarkets nearby making it really easy to cook if you want, or eat out if that's what you would prefer.

I stayed in Colombo for one month - Gamini's place was self contained, with a large bedroom, lounge room area. bathroom and well equipped kitchen. The location of the place was great for me - it was out of the city and in the suburbs, quiet and felt very safe. I was travelling on my own and Gamini was an excellent host - he gave me lots of advice, and often gave me his delicious cooking to try. I also visited Gamini's tea plantation in the hill country which was a great experience!
