About this listing

Securely located in a tropical garden behind an historic home, it served as the cook house in the early 1800's. I renovated it into a charming and unique one bedroom apartment. The cottage
has the original brick oven, exposed ceiling beams and a herringbone patterned brick floor.
Located only steps from restaurants, shops, public transportation and with a fully equipped kitchen means you'll save money not having to rent a car or having to go out to eat for every meal.
Go green!

The space

This well-known home was once owned by the infamous Mexican General Santa Anna of Texas's Alamo fame in the 1850's and by General Vilbrun Guillaume "Simon" Sam, a President of Haiti in the late 1800's. Kitchens were built away from the main house because so many houses were destroyed by kitchen fires. Our harbor town, Charlotte Amalie was destroyed six times by fires and building laws were changed as a preventative measure. Few original kitchen cottages remain intact in the Caribbean. The cottage is securely nestled in a tropical garden that has filled out beautifully to provided safe haven for many types of hummingbirds, bananaquits, tiny doves and butterflies.

Guest access

The cottage is securely nestled in the enclosed courtyard garden behind the main house. The house is located at the very bottom of a steep hill which means you won't be exhausted every time you return back to the cottage (unlike the many listings perched way up directly behind me).
Guests will have access to my private roof terrace overlooking the cruise ship harbor.

Interaction with guests

I am a very experienced Airbnb host. I have hosted over 350 successfully completed trips and currently have 170 reviews that you can read. So, if you're trying to decide between my listing and one of my friendly competitors...go with experience!
Upon check-in, I will quickly go over the map of St.Thomas to get you comfortable on where you are. I have two print-outs that I make available, one is of mine and my guests favorite nearby restaurants and how to get to them, the other is of our favorite beaches. Don't worry, I'll steer you well clear of sneaky tourist traps (and there are loads of them here:).
I am a very non-intrusive host, but if needed, I live on the top floor of the main house. Don't be afraid to use anything in the cottage and you don't have to stress about replacing anything you may have used. If you have any questions while your here, I will respond promptly to your texts and emails.

Other things to note

The kitchen is fully equipped with pots, pans, dishes, cutlery, toaster, coffee maker, frig, a cooktop and a convection oven. There will be fresh bath, hand towels and washcloths in the bathroom. Yes, there is plenty of hot water (don't laugh, not all listings on this site have a water heater:). There is a hair dryer in the bathroom and an iron and ironing board in the bedroom. The queen size pillow-top bed is new and will have four pillows and freshly laundered linens. There will be two beach towels, an umbrella, sunscreen, insect repellent and Aloe Vera for your use.
There are maps of both St. Thomas and St. John for you to use.

First, Doug was a very kind and welcoming host. He provided us with great suggestions of beaches to check out and things to do. The Old Danish Kitchen was not exactly as expected. I had planned this trip as relaxing present for my fiancée. We were able to have a good time on the trip but spent very little time at the rental. This listing is more roughing it than expected. I have roughed it before on trips but was not expecting to based on the description of the listing. It only has A/C in the bedroom and is smaller than expected. It also advertises as having wifi but that is only accessible from the roof. I will say the roof is the gem of this listing it gives amazing views and an amazing place to watch the sunset. The location is great and very walkable, however cleanliness of the alley where the entrance is is lacking. I would also say that for what is offered in this listing it is priced higher than expected. If it was cheaper I would consider it a budget friendly option to visit the island.

Jason, you stayed at "The Olde Danish Kitchen Cottage w/WiFi", they are located in two different buildings and are totally different listings.

Douglas was a great host! Right at the start, he gave me thorough explanations of the area, transportation, sights, restaurants and shops. The bungalow is centrally located for taxis, Safari vans, ferry boats, restaurants, sightseeing, and shopping in Charlotte Amalie. Part of a 19th century mansion previously owned by Mexican General Santa Anna, the bungalow faces a courtyard, lush with flora. And the entire complex has an expansive roof top, which is phenomenal and quite peaceful, especially early morning or at night. Loved it! Bob

Doug was a great host. He really made the check-in/out very convenient. The roof-top terrace view of the waterfront is amazing. I had coffee up there in the morning and a cocktail at sunset. Doug was also very helpful during the week with answering our questions promptly and being knowledgeable about the area. My wife & I went to St Thomas for an anniversary celebration. The cottage is perfect for a couple that wants a home base close to shopping, dining, and transportation.

If you would like to include a city adventure to your trip, this is a great location. St. Thomas and St. John beaches are easy to get to with shopping and food nearby. The room is very comfortable but the living area/kitchen can get a little stuffy. The roof top more than makes up for this, and is a wonderful hang out spot. Douglas gives you your privacy, but is extremely quick with responses to questions about anything. Overall this was a terrific home base for all of our island excursions.

I can't say enough good things about Doug and the Cottage. The space is exactly as described (I'd actually say it's nicer than it appears on the site - the pics don't capture how comfortable and charming it is) and Doug is a fantastic host. Terrific communication, immediate responses. Made me feel at home from the moment I arrived, lots of information about the neighborhood and the Island. As for the space, I will be recommending the Cottage to all of my friends except for the most mobility-challenged (the house is at the top of a hill and there are some stairs). Charming, breezy, quiet. There are hummingbirds in the garden. The roof terrace is as gorgeous as pictured. Perfectly situated near great places to eat, the safari stop, ferry landing, all the shops. Great stove, kitchen supplies, plenty of hot water. Oh - and regarding the mattress? Unbelievably comfortable pillow-top: haven't slept so well in ages. (No squeaks!) This space is perfect for a solo traveler or a couple. I loved it - thanks Doug!

If you're wavering on where to stay in St. Thomas, any of Douglas's properties will exceed your expectations! Douglas is the most professional host in all of St. Thomas! Not only are his spaces beautifully prepared, safe, and spotless bar none, but even small details like extra amenities and toiletries are a lovely surprise. Doug is accommodating and responsive, and his communication is top-notch: he can tell you anything and everything you need to know about the island, and also offers supremely helpful tips on how to navigate not only St. Thomas, but the rest of USVI. He is helpful, kind, and will ensure you have the most pleasant of stays in St. Thomas! Many thanks to you, Douglas, and best wishes! :)

I moved to St.Thomas from Washington,DC where I was actively involved in a very frantic and stressful real estate market. When things would get particularly hectic, I would slip away to St.Thomas for a few days to regroup and recharge. After my fifth or sixth visit here, I decided that I really liked island life and started looking at properties to buy. Before I knew it, I bought three historic buildings (all in desperate need of renovation) with twenty apartments, sold my last property in DC in 2003 and never looked back! I've since sold one of the buildings and now have just the two with twelve apartments. One of my listings that I call "The Olde Danish Kitchen Cottage w/Wi-Fi" is in a well-known five-unit building built around 1820 that I call "Casa Santa Anna" (it was owned in the 1850's by the infamous Mexican General Santa Anna of Texas's Alamo fame). The other listing called "Historic Danish Kitchen w/Wi-Fi" is in a seven unit building that is registered as a "certified historic structure" deemed important for renovation purposes by the United States Department of the Interior (it was first surveyed in 1833), that I call "Bunker Hill". Who knows, maybe one of them will charm you into making a reservation!
I don't mind sharing my ideas, experiences and favorite places on St. Thomas or anywhere in the Caribbean with my guests. If you want to take home a real island experience, you'll find it here.
Escape for a few days, or maybe a lifetime!

Douglas
