Great location
100% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating.
Our guesthouse is across the driveway from the main house on 1.5 acres on a quiet country road, yet only 2 miles from Old Town Auburn, 3 miles from the Auburn State Recreation Area, and 1.5 hours from Lake Tahoe. The guesthouse is approximately 375 sq ft, has its own entrance with convenient parking, a well-appointed kitchenette, a bedroom with a full size bed adjoining a private deck, and a huge bathroom with a closet. It’s perfect for a couple or single, and suitable for longer term stays.

The space
Updated 5/20/20:

As the world eases back into social mobility, we want to assure our potential guests that we remain vigilant regarding our responsibility to provide an exceptionally clean and safe place for you to stay.

Our unit is private and separate from our house, checkin and out are contact-free, and I am solely responsible for cleaning and maintaining it. Every extra measure is taken to sanitize the living space. We have also instituted, temporarily, a 2 night minimum.

I am committed to your safety and comfort no less than I would be for myself and my own family. Please don’t hesitate to contact me regarding your questions. All for one and one for all. --Gina

The Roost is a cozy private space with a cabiny feel. The entryway serves as both foyer and kitchenette, where you’ll find small versions of everything you need to cook and eat in: microwave, fridge with freezer, toaster/oven, hot plate, coffee maker. The well-stocked pantry has food staples, dishes and cooking essentials. We provide a selection of teas and freshly ground coffee; and whenever possible, fresh fruit and homemade granola with almond milk.

On one side of the entry is the bedroom; on the other is the bathroom and closet. The bedroom has a pine ceiling and floor, and opens out to a private deck complete with party lights and seating to watch the sunset. The full size bed has a handmade cherry frame and a ComfortTech Serene Foam mattress. There’s WIFI, a DVD player, and the television is Roku enabled featuring three paid streaming services: Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Netflix. There’s also a desk-size table and chairs for eating and/or working.

The bathroom is large, with two sinks, a vanity, a walk-in tiled shower, and separate toilet area. We provide nice soft towels as well as shampoo, conditioner, soap, hairdryer, etc. At the far end of the bathroom there’s a closet with a chest of drawers and extra blankets/pillows, a small iron and ironing board, a fan, and extra heater. You’ll find a couple games as well, for the occasional rainy day.

We love that both the bedroom and the bathroom get lots of natural light—there is a skylight in each. And throughout the space, you’ll find original art pieces and photography by people we know and love. The property is always “coming along” but there’s something special about it even when it’s rough. We just like being here and we hope our guests do too.

Our host philosophy is to treat everyone that comes to the Roost like a friend. We strive to provide a super-clean comfortable private space with lots of extras. We do not charge extra for cleaning and offer a discount if you stay more than one night. We take great pride in making you feel at home. The endeavor is dedicated to my mom, who would have said with the warmest smile and a brogue, “céad míle fáilte.”

Guest access
There are BBQs (charcoal and propane) as well as outdoor seating areas that you are welcome to use.

Other things to note
We love dogs and understand people that don't want to travel without theirs. We don't think our property is well-suited to host dogs because it's not fenced and there are cats that roam the property (as well as raccoons, skunks, foxes and deer). But, if you'd like to stay here with your well-behaved non-cat-chasing dog, send us a message so we can work that out. We'd also prefer that, if we agree to host you and your pup, that you not leave your dog unattended in the guesthouse. Thanks!

Location

Auburn, California, United States

Auburn is a really fun place to be. We have wineries, breweries, museums, art, shops, and it’s an outdoors-person’s paradise. The Auburn State Recreation Area has it all: trails for hiking, running, backpacking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and OHV; the American River for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, floating, rafting, fishing, and gold panning. There’s even some serious rock climbing to do here.

We are super-close to Old Town Auburn and Downtown Auburn, as well as Newcastle. Ask us for restaurant recommendations but we always love Newcastle Pizzeria in Newcastle, and recommend Monkey Cat in downtown Auburn for fine dining.

There's free parking at various locations that will get you into the Auburn State Recreation Area for running or hiking: Murphy's Gate, along the road near China Gate, and at American River Overlook Park. Parking is $10 at or near the confluence but that gets you really close to the river if you just want to hang out and cool off. We have maps in the guesthouse--ask us about any features of the park you're interested in visiting.

If you're into cooler or cold (depending on the time of year), head up I80 toward Truckee. We are only 1 hour from skiing at Boreal, and 1.5 hours to numerous runs in the North Lake Tahoe area. Or take a hike along part of the Pacific Crest Trail with spectacular views of Donner Lake--that's less than an hour drive.

My partner and I bought this crazy fixer-upper in 2015 and dreamed of making it the sort of place where our friends and families would want to visit. It's still a work in progress but we loved the guesthouse so much that we wanted to share it as much as possible. I really like preparing the place and meeting the people that come to stay. I find myself humbled and inspired by the kindness of travelers. My partner Chris has an art studio at the house and I am a freelance writer/editor. When we're not here, we are traveling to see friends and family, or getting our big city fix. My favorite thing about living in Auburn is its proximity to the American River Canyon. I run trails with the dog out there every day.
