Inis Méain, the middle of the three Aran Islands, is 9 square kilometres. As it is an extension of the Burren, it is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. There are two historical stone forts, Dún Chonchúir and Dún Fearbhaigh which date from the 4th centaury. Many notable poets and political figures such as John Millington Synge and Patrick Pearse, have made the journey to Inis Méain. The Church of Naomh Muire gan Smál, was built in 1939.
