Experience living in the traditional house (it's called Rumah Gadang in Minang's language) in kampong of Kotomarapak in Bukittinggi. It's a wooden house originally built in 1918, yet has modern facilities such as bathroom with hot water and wifi.

The space

Rumah Gadang Nantigo is most probably the first authentic Minangkabau traditional house with modern facilities you can get in West Sumatera.

Interaction with guests

Anytime when our guest is in a free time, we will accompany them to talk and they are free to ask anything about the house, the culture or else.

Other things to note

The room is small because we did not change anything on our vintage room. We are using traditional mattress which is a kapok mattress, covered with silk organic (tencel) sheet.

Rumah Gadang Nantigo is a really great place to stay if you want to experience village life in West Sumatra, and the design and feel of the homestay makes it one of the most interesting places I have stayed in. If you like traditional Indonesian architecture, history and culture then Arina's place is definitely worth checking out. While it is perhaps a little far from Bukittinggi city centre (approx. 5 kms) if you want to be able to walk to town, it does have the advantage of being nestled in a quiet, peaceful village that has retained much of its character. There are also angkots (local buses) that service the main road nearby, so you can take one of these into Bukittinggi for a truly authentic local experience (it helps if you know a few words of bahasa Indonesia, too). It is a really nice place to walk around at sunset, past the rice fields and traditional houses, listening to the call to prayer, and watching the sun disappear behind the mountains. Arina is a great host, too. She was very informative about West Sumatran history and culture, and even took me to some local warung (food stalls) to try some of the delicious local food.

I stayed one night on weekday so I had the entire house for my self. The check in was easy, though I come earlier. They help me to have meals and transportation to see Bukittinggi city (with fee). The surrounding was very nice, lots of greenery and the air is cool. No AC is needed at night and the mosquitoes did not bother me (they left the room after dusk).

To stay in Arina s house is a very unique experience as it is an original Minankabau house and if you want to learn anything about how they used to live and still do, this is the place to come to. Unfortunately we did not have the chance to meet Arina but her family looked after us wonderfully!

Everything is okay. The place is very clean. Too bad the night we stayed in was blackout and the wifi is non existence.

Beautiful traditional house in a quiet village. Room was very cosy and there is a spacious guest area to sit in. Arina was an extremely helpful host despite not being present at the time of my stay - she arranged a tour for me and booked transport to padang. Arina's aunt and uncle were very welcoming and the breakfasts were delicious! Would recommend for anyone who wants to escape the noise of the city while still being in close driving distance of bukkitingi

Arina is the perfect host, more like a friend and so very helpful and knowledgeable about all aspects of local culture. The house is full of character and right in a village which has many other beautiful rumah gadang. Then the home-cooked food is the best indonesian food I've had! I highly recommend to any visitor of Sumatra to spend time in Arina's house and I hope to come back one day.

I'm a simple person who wants to fill in my life with something good for me and people around me. I love my family most, like do traveling to enjoy beautiful nature around. I love sunrise more than sunset.

I like doing my traveling to get know the place I visit, its culture and food. My favorite place I visited is South Korea as I experienced living in homestay in traditional house. I do it without using travel agent so I can stay in my favorite place as long as I want.

Rumah Gadang Nantigo might not be my main house as I base in Jakarta. But, I'll try myself to be in Bukittinggi whenever my guest are visiting because I like making friends.

My motto is: Yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery, today is a gift. This makes me thankful and feel grateful for everything I have now.
