In the woods near Bayfield

Our yurt offers a sweet retreat in the woods about 10 miles outside of Bayfield. We are located on a small working organic farm with vegetable gardens, apple trees, and rustic accommodations. We are close to great outdoor recreation near Lake Superior and are about 6 miles from Meyers Beach in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Our property is located on 40 acres and is very remote. We are on the edge of thousands of acres of county land. The perfect escape!
The space
A Few Notes:
Electricity: We are an off-the-grid solar electric farm, so we have a limited amount of electricity. We suggest bringing a headlamp or flashlight as well as there is only one light in the yurt. In addition to the light, there is an iPod dock/radio. After November 1st, the fridge is turned off, but you can still store your food in it and the outlets are turned off. The electric outlets don’t work in the winter. Plan accordingly.
Bathrooms: We have an outhouse with a composting toilet, so expect to venture out of the yurt to use the restroom. There is no shower onsite. Please plan ahead if you are hoping to find public showers, we can't guarantee their hours or availability due to the pandemic.
Communication: We have a phone in the yurt for local calls and for emergencies. There is no WIFI or cell phone service. If you are looking to unplug, this is the perfect place for you!
Heat: The yurt is heated by a wood stove and WOOD IS PROVIDED FOR INDOOR FIRES. We prefer you buy some locally for use in the outdoor fire ring. There is wood for sale at most gas stations locally. During the winter, know that it can take several hours to warm the space and be prepared to feed the fire overnight. We suggest bringing slippers to keep your feet warm during colder months.
Pets: No Pets allowed! Period...
Smoking: No Smoking INSIDE the yurt. Feel free to smoke outside, but dispose of your butts safely.
Bedding: We have one full size futon in the loft and another full size futon on the main floor. BEDDING IS NOT PROVIDED. Please plan accordingly.
Capacity: We have beds for 4 people, and that is the recommended amount of folks to stay in the yurt. If you have a larger group, we may be able to make accommodations. Please inquire and we will do our best to help!
Cooking: We provide a few basics: a set of dishes, silverware, pots/pans. We have a 4 burner propane stove. There is NO oven. We have a fridge for storing food, but it is turned OFF in the winter. You may still keep food in there during your stay. Please make sure your food is secure in the fridge
or in a cooler inside the yurt. There are black bears around and we don't want them to eat your dinner. No candles or open flames in the yurt.
Bugs: This is not a resort or hotel, we don’t spray for bugs. We promote biodiversity on the farm and with that comes mosquitoes, ticks and wasps. We cannot guarantee you won’t encounter these during your stay. If this is a concern for you, our rentals might not be the right fit..
Water: We provide a 5 gallon jug of water, during the summer months, but during the winter, (November-Early May) you need to bring your own. The nearest artesian well is in Cornucopia, WI. Otherwise, you can bring water before you come.
Garbage: We are a leave no trace operation. Please pack in and pack out your goods.
Kids: Here's the deal-kids are welcome, with caution. The yurt is not child proof. We are open to the idea, but it may be more work for you as the parent!
I know we live in the woods, but please respect our wishes.. No firearms. No fireworks. No hunting.
Camping: Is allowed. Please inquire within about the best places to put your tent.
COVID 19- We are taking extra precautions with cleaning and sanititizing in between guests. Your health and safety is very important to us. If you are experiencing any symptoms, we ask that you re-schedule your trip to the farm and we will offer a refund. We ask that you try to bring everything you need with you, as not all local businesses have re-openend. Many restaurants are doing take out only. If you do need to shop locally, please follow CDC recommendations for social distancing and wearing masks. Thanks for your support in keeping our community safe and healthy.

Other things to note
Winter travel: The road leading to the yurt is plowed, but may require four wheel drive or snow tires to access for winter use. Plan to have everything you need with you when you arrive, as the nearest stores are 10 miles away in either direction. Plan for a walk-approx 500 feet from the end of the driveway to the yurt. Snowshoes or skis may be helpful depending on the amount of snow, but this is not a requirement. The driveway itself is not plowed and so you will need to sled your gear a distance or plan to carry in your gear if there is no snow. For winter travel, packing light is encouraged. Note: staying in the yurt during the winter months is lovely, but can be a tremendous amount of work by the time you haul in your gear and get the fire raging. I wouldn't suggest it if you are new to the world of outdoor adventures.. but if you are up for the challenge it can be a lovely retreat!
Spring time renting: Expect muddy conditions! Please bring your mud boots. Watch out for ticks! They come out in the spring and early summer and precautions are always a good thing. Whether you prefer deet or something more natural, its good to have a plan! We suggest daily tick checks!
Summer time: The yurt gets crazy hot mid day, we do have a small fan, but you may want to plan to be at the beach during the day and return in the evenings. Speaking of bugs, mosquitoes are fierce, depending on the conditions.. So, wear some layers or bring a head net if you plan to roam the property at peak season!

Neighbourhood highlights
We are located near lots of natural beauty.. the most beautiful beaches Lake Superior has to offer, great hiking, biking, paddling and fishing. If you are more of a city girl, we are close to great restaurants and shopping in Bayfield. Either way, the yurt is perfect balance for the person on a budget, who wants to explore a unique setting and have a bed to sleep in!

I am a hospice nurse in the area, but we also own and operate a small diversified organic vegetable farm nestled on 40 acres near Bayfield, WI. The farm was part of an old homestead and has hundreds of wild apple trees that my husband takes great joy in turning into cider. We are dreaming of starting a community cider house and putting these apples to good use. We are passionate about local food and and want to share our farm with you. We have 2 boys and are busy with keeping them out of trouble. We love to be outdoors and have explored all the amazing hikes, swimming spots and magical forest nooks our community has to offer!
