This Place is a bohemian gem. Marjon has her own style and touch but managed to bring the Rio vibe in her home, colorful vibrant, this place is not for the nitpickers, who like their things correct and in a certain order, this is a place for the free spirited. There are 2 lovely dogs and a pack of cats to welcome you, they come by the house if you want to or leave you alone if you don't . Marjon is great, she has all the tips and tricks you want to know, and knows Rio as if she was a native. Don't hestitate to ask her anything, she will immediately try and help. Overall we had a great stay and felt welcomed

We were lucky enough to stay in this fantastic bohemian, well designed apartment. Amazing location, stunning views of Rio and the statue of Christ. Peaceful and quiet, a romantic location for a couple to stay. Wonderful to be visited on the balcony by monkeys and tucans. A perfect location for us – short and easy travel to centre by bus or taxis. Great to be able to get away from it all at the end of the day - to the beautiful and still hills above Rio. Marjon is a great host, friendly, extremely knowledgeable with great advice on what & how to do it in Rio.

Marjon was a fantastic host! She made extra efforts to make sure our stay was great. The house is really cool and could appreciate its character, highly recommend if you like unique architecture. The view and property are nice to enjoy at anytime. Just a short bus ride and you are anywhere in Rio! A++

We had a wonderful stay at Marjon's house in Rio. Her friend let us in and showed us round, which was perfect. It was our honeymoon, and Marjon had decorated the bedroom with white flowers, which was so pretty. It is hard to describe the view, because the words are all so overused, but it is a breathtaking view of a very different part of Rio. We loved the stay, and would definitely come again.

The view from Marjon's place was fantastic! We were able to sit on the balcony and look over the jungle up to Christ the Redeemer. Marion also very kindly waited until 2am for us to arrive after our flight was significantly delayed. Marjon's place is located a 10minute bus ride from the centre of San Telmo. We utilised Uber on recommendation from Marjon as taxis don't like to go up the hill. We managed to learn the bus through a bit of trial and error. There are no restaurants or shops in walking distance. In the apartment description it was mentioned that basic breakfast items would be supplied for the first morning. Unfortunately this didn't happen. As we couldn't find Marjon the morning following arrival to ask directions we left the apartment having not eaten for 20hours and got very lost. We were disappointed at the level of cleanliness. There was a significant amount of dirt in the apartment including a strong smell of cat and cat hair in the bed. We were also bitten by insects in the bed and had dermatological issues. During a Uber trip we had to pass through a police block. The police were looking for a person and approached the car with guns in hand. Our Uber driver explained the police presence in the neighbourhood was due to shootings on our first night. We heard further incidences the following nights. Needless to say we were not to keen on going out late at night.

Passionate journalist since 37 years. Born in Amsterdam, I lived in different parts of the world. Ten years in Italy, Bosnia (yes during the war), and Mexico.
Since 15 years in the bohemian Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Santa Teresa. Although I travel all over Latin America, this magical place is forever my home.
I just finished building this guest house at the top of my garden. A dream I had for years: to create a tasteful and cosy house, so other people can savour the place I love most in the world.
If you want I can be a source of tips for alternative places to visit and hang out, including favelas. Places I deeply love, and often frequent.
Ah yes: I have two (very sweet) dogs and a bunch of cats. (They don't come in your house. No worry.)
This year I will be at home a lot because of the World Cup, and a book I have to finish writing.
That's me, for now.
