Staying at Marjon's place was probably the best Part of our stay in Rio. If you are fortunate to catch her when she has some time, you will find her background on Rio, the people, the culture and the challenges to be outstanding! We learned so much from her. The best part in staying at her place is how close it is to downtown yet away from the hustle and bustle so you can actually have a relaxing time away. Just watch out for those darn monkeys, they stole my breakfast bun the second last day of our stay!

Marjon as a hostess is the best ever!! The place is exactly as she advertises and I must say is fabulous! It's a great place to have for sightseeing yet being a bit away from downtown. But we were the ones who saw those monkeys- they stole our pasta!!

Staying in Marjon's guest house was an exceptional experience. The house is even better than it appears in the photos. Having an open kitchen made us feel like we were in a tropical forest. There were monkeys swinging in the trees and small lizards as well. We always felt safe in the apartment. The bus stops right outside the gate but there is also the option to walk or take a taxi. We slept very soundly on the comfortable bed. The wifi was completely reliable too - something we learned can be uncommon in Rio. Everything about the apartment was perfect and exceeded our expectations. Meeting Marjon though was the most memorable experience. This warm and charming woman will tell you anything you need to know about the city. Marjon helped alleviate any of the fears we had about coming to the city for the first time. Her witty conversation was such an unexpected bonus. There were times that I forgot she was a stranger because it felt like we were staying in the home of a favourite aunt. Marjon and her dogs were such a welcome presence that was around when we wanted it and scarce when we didn't. I can't thank Marjon enough for the incredible experience.

Marjons house is out of a dream, nestled inside a lush forested hill, with christ looking over. The house was easy to locate, and very well connected by bus to the centre of Santa Teresa, which is a beautifully ambient neighbourhood. Marjon's very affectionate cats and dogs made us feel at home. And Marjon herself is an incredibly knowledgeable person and a warm host. Nature almost spills into this house, which is what makes it special. However as a result, maintaining the house is a challenge. There will be monkeys, birds, bugs and of course dogs and cats around. The open kitchen will tend to get dusty. While these were hardly issues for us, people who have outrageously high expectations about cleanliness should are not encouraged to stay here.

Marjon has created a corner of paradise high on the mountain of Santa Teresa. We stayed in an architect-designed tower with breathtaking views across to the Christ Redentor. The tower is beautifully decorated with traditional Brazilian tiles and simple fabrics, pictuers and artefacts to create a comfortable and charming environment in the midst of a lush tropical garden. Marjon is a lovely host, warm, welcoming and very helpful with tips for visits and eateries. A constant flow of buses from just outside takes you to and from the city centre effortlessly. Watch out for the troops of monkeys - they are delightful to watch but shameless thieves! Despite warnings from Marjon we put out our breakfast fruit on the table in the open air kitchen and within minutes the marauders had snatched it all. We learned the hard way!

Passionate journalist since 37 years. Born in Amsterdam, I lived in different parts of the world. Ten years in Italy, Bosnia (yes during the war), and Mexico.
Since 15 years in the bohemian Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Santa Teresa. Although I travel all over Latin America, this magical place is forever my home.
I just finished building this guest house at the top of my garden. A dream I had for years: to create a tasteful and cosy house, so other people can savour the place I love most in the world.
If you want I can be a source of tips for alternative places to visit and hang out, including favelas. Places I deeply love, and often frequent.
Ah yes: I have two (very sweet) dogs and a bunch of cats. (They don't come in your house. No worry.)
This year I will be at home a lot because of the World Cup, and a book I have to finish writing.
That's me, for now.
