House Rules & Info for guests of County Guest House

(Until further notice I cannot take guests for a period of less than 30 days, it's a County rule, not mine. So please ignore any reference to stays of less than 30 days.) Single occupancy only please.

Some of my guests come from Airbnb, and some from other sources. I have merged the rules for all and hopefully you can figure out which ones apply to you. If not, just ask.

My house rules are meant to keep everyone safe and happy. Please read these rules very carefully and let me know if you are okay with them. Don't skim - there will be a test to see if you actually read them.

Before you move in I will be asking for a copy of your driver's licence. If you can't scan and email it to me, I can copy it here when you arrive.

What you need to bring (weekly and monthly renters):

• Flashlights (one for car, one for bedside)
• A pillow for your bed (not Airbnb)
• Your own towels and facecloths (not Airbnb)
• Shampoo, toothpaste, soap, and other personal items
• Laundry detergent
• Dish detergent
• Groceries (please shop before you get here)
• Bath robe and slippers
• A frying pan and plastic storage containers if you need them, as I do not lend mine. Most other pots and pans are available for your use.
• For The Cave (basement) only, toilet paper
• Healthy cat treats (The cats requested that, it isn't really necessary...)

Charges above rent (mostly optional):

• Internet for email and looking at websites is provided at $10 per week, but please note that unlimited internet is not available in The County. If you need to do heavy streaming activities such as downloading and watching movies, or want to use Netflix, we can top up the internet if you are willing to pay for it. (Included for Airbnb guests)
• Laundry may be done for you at $10 per load, or you may do it yourself at no charge.
• Food, personal supplies, and laundry supplies are not provided except by arrangement. For some people I have kept breakfast items on hand for a small fee.
• Coke or Ginger Ale is available at $1 per can. Canned soup is available at $4 per can.
• For approved non-smoking guests (wife, girlfriend, someone you know well) - overnight stays are $10 per night.
• The Shaw satellite TV can be connected if you pay for it. We never used our TV so don't have one any more.

Rules of the House:

• However long you stay, check in is after 3pm and check out is before 11am.
• Guests may not have visitors. No visitors of any kind without discussion with Sharon. Non-smoking spouses, girlfriends, or boyfriends may visit for an extra charge of $10 per night with permission if they clean up after themselves and do not cause any problems. I would need to know in advance of the visit.
• For visitors longer than one week, you are responsible for changing your bed and cleaning your room.
• There is no smoking anywhere on the property, not even outside. If you are a smoker of anything, please do not come here.
• If you cook, you should clean up after yourself promptly, and recycle any waste to compost or garbage. If you can't do that, please don't cook. This involves rinsing and putting your dishes in the dishwasher (if you are using the upstairs kitchen), or washing your dishes in the sink (in the basement), also washing your pots and pans. Remember to wipe down the stove. Please do not leave any open food around, we are in the country here and the outside will come inside if food is left out.
• If you are cooking, please be careful not to put any food or grease into the sink drains. When using a pan for baking meat, you must use foil to line the pan so the grease can be picked up in that foil and discarded in the garbage instead of into the sink.
• Please do not leave kitchen appliances such as slow cookers, or the washer or dryer, on while you are out. All appliances must be attended when on.
• Please use the toaster oven instead of the stove oven, it uses less hydro and is easier to clean.
• Please do not remove the food-catcher drain thing from the sink, empty it into the compost bucket so stuff doesn't get into the pipes.
• Please do not store food in your room or we will have uninvited critters. I will give you storage in the kitchen.
• Please recycle and compost properly. It is a little complicated but I will help you. I want to keep the land clean. No meat or bones in the compost bucket, just veg. materials.
• Please conserve water. Here in The County wells can run short if we are extravagant. Please stagger dishwasher, laundry, and shower water use.
• I may have other guests so please work with me on making them comfortable and working around shower schedules. There is a second toilet but only one shower upstairs (and a private one downstairs for the basement unit).
• Men, please leave the toilet seat down after use. My cats (Bengals) love to splash around in water and can't tell the difference between a toilet and a swimming pool.
• Everyone, please leave the bathroom door open after use so we don't have a long wait thinking someone is in there and to allow for air flow.
• Please be careful of hydro use. We heat and cool with hydro here and it is very expensive.
• I ask that you shut off lights when you leave a room, even for a few minutes. Be ready to put on a sweater if you feel chilly, the heat will not be overly high.
• Please do laundry and other hydro-intensive activities only between the hours of 7pm to 7am, or all day weekends (hydro low peak and cheaper). Do not leave the building if you have the washer, dryer, or stove running, turn them off first. You may not use my laundry machines for really dirty or greasy clothes. Please do not wash one or two things at a time, wait until you have a load.
• To save my house's septic system, if you pee and use toilet paper, please put the toilet paper in the wastebaskets beside the toilets.
• No fires in the fire pit or anywhere else without Sharon's permission. Fire regulations state that I must phone the fire hall each time before starting any fire to get their permission, and must personally be onsite to watch the fire. They may not give permission or there may be a burn ban, and we have to pay for any fire trucks that come because the neighbours saw smoke and called the FD.
• We have cats here. They don’t pay rent so they have to sleep with whoever is keeping a bed warm, so close your door if you don't want company. Don't let them outside or you will be sent into the woods to look for them. That upsets the coyotes and foxes. Squirrels and raccoons, and possibly the possum (Petunia) gets involved. It's a whole chain reaction.
• Please do not put any new holes in the walls. If you need to hang something and the existing holes are not enough, please see Sharon.
• No guns or other weapons in the house. No candles
• As mentioned already, please bring your own pillows, towels, facecloths, other personal items, shampoo, toothpaste, dish detergent, and laundry detergent, etc. The main bathroom is set up with towels and amenities for the guest house daily guests; weekly or monthly guests should bring their own. (not Airbnb)
• Please keep your bath towels and supplies in your room. There is a caddy to carry your shampoo etc. back and forth.
• Please bring a flashlight for your room and one for your car. The power may occasionally go down for a few minutes here in The County, and our backyard is very dark at night when the moon is not full. Rechargeable flashlights are the cheapest to run.
• VERY IMPORTANT: if the hydro goes out, DO NOT run any water or flush any toilets, or we will not have water for several days until the plumber gets here to prime the pump.
• Please pay your rent by Interac online transfer, not by cheque or cash. I do not go into town often enough to deposit cheques or cash. If you are not familiar with Interac, I can explain how to do it in about 5 seconds. (Not Airbnb)
• Please pay your rent on time. I have several bills that come out of my bank account every month, and they won't wait so I can't either.
• Be nice to the chipmunk who hangs out on my deck, he is my friend. His name is Chippy and he likes toast. Actually there are several chipmunks, all named Chippy since I can't tell them apart. The geriatric squirrel is named Chippy too.
• Please be flexible, we are rural here and sometimes unexpected things happen. Communication with others will prevent most problems. Teamwork is the key to a happy home.
• This is a scent-free environment. Please do not use perfumes etc. that put off any kind of smell or may trigger allergies..
• If you have a TV or watch videos on YouTube, etc., please use a headset so as not to disturb others. Please make sure both your TV and your satellite (if any) are OFF when you leave the house.
• Pets: I do not allow dogs here, ask if you need to know why. Cats are welcome if they are clean and not destructive, for a small extra charge for later cleaning. Indoor cats only. Birds and fish are okay, the cats agree with me on this.
• Parking seems to shrink when there is bad weather. Please assume that others will need parking and park close to the next car or close to the house.
• If you are the last person to leave the house, please check to make sure that all the lights are off and the door is locked.

The Cave (basement) dwellers only:

• If you are in the basement room where you have the baseboard heater in addition to the house heat, you must turn off the baseboard heater completely when you leave the house. Again, the cost of hydro is an issue. Same goes for lights. If you are not in the room, the lights should be off, even if you are just going upstairs to use the kitchen or to take a shower.
• If you are in the basement you are responsible for the disposal of your garbage. You can use my recycle and composting bins but other garbage requires that a tag be purchased.

If any problem with above, please let me know before you see or book your room.

Regards,

Sharon Heenan
