Enjoy this unique renovated School House as a safe space to isolate for a couple, family or group, during these uncertain times. Independent and remote, the School House is located in the beautiful Beaver Valley, near the Blue Mountains. With reliable, consistent high speed internet, and a close drive to groceries and towns with essential needs, the School House is an ideal location to stay safe, and healthy.

The space
This is a rustic, simple, clean country home with a mix of private bedrooms and open common spaces. With generous outdoor space for walking, and exploring, this is a wonderful location to take a break from your own home, and get outside to explore the Bruce Trail, and Beaver Valley views. With five bedrooms, two full bathrooms, spacious open great room, and an outside fire pit, this may be just the change you need to rejuvenate and re-energize. Open the sliding doors onto the raised porch deck to BBQ your dinner, and enjoy the Valley sunrise.

Socialize and play games with your family, or group of friends in the main living area, which is upstairs on the main floor. Use the fully stocked kitchen to prepare your meals, and eat together in the dining area overlooking the east side of Beaver Valley.

There are 5 bedrooms to divide up your group: 2 upstairs, and 3 on the ground floor, as well as bunk beds in the common areas if needed. Both bathrooms have been renovated.

Please note along with the Spring water provided in the kitchen dispenser, the well water is clean, clear and safe to drink, and enjoy. We have installed a UV black light, and peroxide filtration system that effectively removes the natural sulphur odour from the well.

Guest access
Guests have full access to all the features of the house including BBQ, dishwasher, washer & dryer, and wireless internet.

Other things to note
We have been hosting through Airbnb for many years in Guelph. The School House is next door to my Dad's farm, so we were excited to re-connect the properties. Our vision is to keep adding elements that resonate with the original feel and charm of the space as a School House, for learning, discovery, exploration. This is such an incredible property with so much potential to evolve, and develop over time. We are excited that we have installed a new geothermal heating and cooling system, and a new septic system. Our next projects are to remove the natural sulphur odour from the hot water tank, to install a good, gravel parking area at the front entrance, and a real wood fireplace in the living room!

We'd love feedback on how you would like to use the space, so we can continue to build it to serve guests in the best way possible.

Location

Kimberley, Ontario, Canada

The School House is located in the Beaver Valley in Southern Ontario in the heart of Grey County at the southern tip of Georgian Bay. Grey County is a lovely mix of meandering country roads, gorgeous views, and windswept sandy beaches of Georgian Bay. There are plenty of places to walk, hike, mountain bike, ski, snowshoe, eat, and relax. The valley is well known for cycling & hiking in the summer, and skiing & snowboarding in the winter. Beaver Valley Ski Club operates as a private ski club just south of the town of Kimberley. And Blue Mountain is a public ski hill about 30 minutes away.

The Beaver River flows north through the valley, emptying into Georgian Bay in the town of Thornbury. There are lots of flourishing apple orchards in the area. A short hike up the hill from the School House leads to the Bruce Trail, which follows the perimeter of the valley passing several natural landmarks like Old Baldy, the Duncan Crevice Caves, and Eugenia Falls. The Niagara Escarpment is designated by UNESCO as a World Biosphere of outstanding natural beauty. The main towns in the area are Flesherton at the south end, Kimberley, Thornbury, Meaford and Collingwood.

The Beaver Valley is one of Ontario's most spectacular natural features. The area provides four seasons of recreation in unspoiled countryside just a short drive from Toronto. Famous for its cliffs and meadows providing gorgeous scenery for artists and photographers; canoeing, kayaking, boating, and fishing are popular on the Beaver River and Eugenia Lake. There are also miles of hiking along the Bruce Trail, and cross-country skiing (Kolapore); down-hill skiing, quiet cycling trails including the Georgian Trail, quaint villages, spectacular waterfalls, caves, and gorges; little-known Provincial Parks or Conservation areas, artisan and antique stores and community events.

We are Mike and Mary-Kate. We care about creating an amazing, supportive community of people around us, local food, sustainable living, environmental design, and having a whole bunch of fun. We live in downtown Guelph, Ontario and are at the beginning stages of transforming our house and yard into an urban farm. We have three kids, Rowan (12), Sikhona (9), and River (8), 2 border collies (Dash & Sophie), 2 ferrets (Bingo & Buddy), and a corn snake (Tiny). We have started the processing of transitioning our property to a "post peak oil" way of being. We have renovated our old stone house and have roughed in solar panels, solar hot water, and grey water. We are excited to try to determine how to grow and produce as much food as possible from our incredible property right in downtown Guelph. We have creative ideas, and are loving every moment of living in possibility. We own a 6-plex apartment building across the road from our house, and we’ve just acquired the house next door. Our aim is to create spaces to host interesting, creative, inspired people who we will share our lives with. Around us, several friends have purchased houses and a community with intention has started to emerge as we are able to garden together, share child care, and help each other in a number of ways. We have also converted the next door house into a co-living space to meet mixed needs by hosting volunteers, short and long term guests. We have enjoyed a steady stream of really awesome travellers who have joined us over the past few years to help us in a number of ways, and become part of the community.
