Strathcona is the oldest neighbourhood in Vancouver and fast becoming the trendiest place to live. A central city spot, you’ll be spoilt for choice with cute cafes, shopping, restaurants, grocery stores and a park with a playground and off-leash area for dogs.
You’re five minutes walk from downtown Vancouver, the artistic Commercial Drive and Main Street areas. Chinatown is a stone’s throw away, where you‘ll discover a wide range of eating and shopping options.
Fancy a bit of shopping? You’re in the right place.
These popular shopping areas are all walking distance:
- Chinatown (your neighbour!)
- Main Street (4 blocks away)
- Gastown (6 blocks away)
- Commercial Drive (10 blocks away)
A few of our favourite haunts are just a block or two away:
- The Snail (best coffee, sandwiches and groceries but no fresh food)
- Bennies (Cool Italian style grocery store with deli and fresh food)
- Union Market (Coffee and grocery store with lots of organic and home-made products...Portuguese owners...try their tart!)
- La Casa Gelato (homemade ice cream store with 218 flavours to choose from)
Skytrain station: Science World (8 minutes walk away)
Bus: A range of bus stops just a block away.
Parking: Lots of free parking around the house (all day!)
- MacLean Park (water park, swings) is the one you can see from our house!
- Strathcona Park (tennis court, baseball field, playground) is two blocks away.
No smoking, pets or big parties.
From Jul 17 - 19, 2015 the minimum stay is 2 nights.
Cam was an incredible host. He took the time to give us his recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed and even lent us his bikes to ride around the city one day (which ended up being a great way to see Vancouver).
Being tall I had to be mindful of the slanted ceilings, but we loved the unique space. Everything was very clean and the beds were comfy. We were glad to find something other than a condo in one of the city's many new high rise buildings. The neighborhood is safe and walking distance to Chinatown, Gastown and lots of public transportation in the downtown area. This is very close to Phnom Penh, a Vietnamese/Cambodian restaurant that will blow your mind!
Overall I highly recommend this place, Cam as a host and Vancouver for a vacation!
Cam and family were super friendly and helpful and I loved the space. This is the perfect location for a visit to Vancouver -- a great residential neighbourhood about as close as you can get to downtown. The apartment is cosy and modern, very comfortable and impeccably clean. The bed was so comfortable, with super crisp sheets. I would definitely stay here again.
Cam is an excellent host, a great communicator, and an all-around good host.
The neighborhood (Strathcona) is a beautiful and peaceful part of Vancouver, within walking distance of plenty of great stuff.
The apartment is a small top floor with sloped ceilings everywhere, and it is a bit of a tight space. But Cam has done an impressive job of turning it into a beautiful and livable apartment. The two bedrooms are arranged in a railroad-style layout, so that the rear room has to be entered through the front one. Both are quite small, and the rear bedroom has a very low ceiling and a low door, so that you have to crouch a bit to get in. But both rooms are also very comfortable and well-lit, the beds are very comfortable, and the whole setup is very functional.
Likewise, the bathroom is unorthodox: because of the ceiling slope, the showerhead sticks out from above the bathroom door, which has its own shower curtain to protect it from the water. And so the whole bathroom becomes a shower stall.
Our group consisted of four close friends (two of us shared one of the beds, one took another bed, and the fourth slept on the convertible sofa), and so we were a bit skeptical about whether we would all fit comfortably in the space at first, but by the end of the weekend we were taking turns giving speeches about how comfortable and cool the space was, and how well it worked for us. This included the bathroom: Cam's design is ingenious, and it was very functional.
One of my favorite touches was that the door doesn't require a key. The lock takes a numerical keypad. This is really convenient, because it meant that we could split up without coordinating about who would be home when with which keys. I wish all AirBnBs had this feature.
I started the first 3 days if my long trip at Cam's upstairs suite. Everything was clean, in a quite neighborhood and he was very accommodating. I don't know what else to say but my 2 friends and I had pleasant stay and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't need to be in the busy city.
Cam seems like the type of person that is truly passionate and thoughtful in regards to his role as an Airbnb host. He's genuine in his desire for you to make the most of your time in Vancouver and provides excellent recommendations that were echoed in many of the blogs we read. I visited Vancouver with a girlfriend for a lovely ladies' vacation and we both fell in love with the neighborhood: Strathcona. Honestly, after clocking 30+ miles in three days just walking all over the city, we both still would opt for this neighborhood to stay/live in.
The apartment itself provides creature comforts including glassware, pots/pans, shampoo/conditioner, soap and tons of extra bedding. The odd angles of the apartment (the attic of their main house) make for a whimsical and charming type of Hobbit house (no Giant Orcs would fit here). The Wifi is really reliable and I'd recommend packing DVDs or your Roku to watch with the flatscreen TV if you need some downtime after hoofin it all over the city (they do provide basic cable). As Cam told us, the neighborhood is one of the oldest neighborhoods in vancouver, which magnifies the charm of the streets and, unfortunately, the voices within the home, but only in the morning during breakfast.
All in all, this apartment is a relaxing, charming, safe and very cozy home away from home.

About the Host, Cam
Bonjour, Hello, I’m Cam.
A passionate traveller and entrepreneur, I’m originally from France and now living in Vancouver, Canada with my wife and two beautiful daughters.
I enjoy meeting new people and exploring new cultures. I’ve been to Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Spain, Italy, Greece, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Finland, UK, Holland, Switzerland, Caraibian, Hong Kong, Australia, USA, Mexico…and there’s more on the bucket list.
I’m happiest when I’m outside; swimming, running, hiking, wakeboarding and snowboarding. I’m also a big fan of design and architecture.
I was one of the earliest members of AirBnB (2009) and the first person to rent a house-boat ☺
