Crabbing/Hunting Paradise-well behaved pets welcome! Have front & center seats to the crab stage! Every afternoon "I Got Your Crabs" boats pull in to unload their catch of the day; a real crabOlicious delight to witness! This cozy cottage has a full kitchen with tile flooring, 2 bedrooms with yellow pine hardwoods & large additional living space with original hardwoods & queen pullout couch! Take a walk, bike ride, conveniently unload your boat, or just hang at the nearby swimming hole!

The space
COVID-19 Friendly - Separate Entrance, Routine cleaning & Sanitized Space! Our little shell Shack has a lot of family meaning to the Stuart family. It was very much a steppingstone for anyone that used it through the years. The Shell Shack was purchased in 1977 by Meme and pop pop Chilton....A hard-working family with a well-known radiator business from Suffolk Virginia! Along with their three children, they purchased the “Shell shack” to use as their weekend destination to get away from the city. They choose Bells Island North Carolina for the destination due to a popular Campground that still exists and is still used very regularly every weekend throughout the summer! Being located right on the Intercoastal waterway brings lots of water activity - boating, water-skiing, jet skiing, and lots of nearby island beaches navigable by boat. One highlight is the 20 min boat trip across the sound to Corova, “The four wheel area of the OBX!” Many families are just passing through the area on their way to the Outer Banks and enjoying some sound life for a few days, some family’s are regular weekend tenets from nearby areas such as Hertford, Gates County, Suffolk, Chesapeake or Virginia Beach. Most just trying to escape to a simpler way of life!
Currituck Waters have been well known in the past for their bass fishing, crabbing, and waterfowl hunting. Bells island is a 25 minute boat trip to the Outer Banks beaches, a 10 minute boat ride to Coinjock Marina to fuel up your boat, grab a quick meal or nice cocktail while sitting on the deck admiring the active Intercoastal Waterway!
You may notice most of the Stuart family are neighbors to the shell shack! During the crabbing season you will see their trucks and boats coming and going from the docks across the street with their fresh catches of seafood daily. The family spent most of the days on the commercial fishing boat with their owners but you may see them sometimes greeting the new neighbors around the neighborhood. They and their K9's are friendly, wanting to say hello to the new neighbors of the shell shack!!

NOTE: Since you are staying with one of the top crabbers in the area - the property may have crabbing supplies on the lot. Also, since we are located on an island with sandy terrain - drainage is often an issue. There may be water in driveway after high-winds and heavy rains. A pair of rubber boots are provided in home for you use if need be.

Bells Island is one of two populated "island" communities that are found in the Currituck Sound. Small but easy to access and explore, the island is a good side-trip for visitors who want to uncover every corner of Currituck County.

About the Area
Bells Island is located in the town of Currituck and is easy to access from US 168 via Bells Island Road. It takes just 7-8 minutes and 3.5 miles of driving to cover the length of the island from the Currituck mainland, making it an easy off-the-beaten path destination.

The island was originally home to a remote community that was sustained by individual farming, hunting and fishing. Today, while hunting and fishing are still recreational past-times, the community is popular with Chesapeake area communities and other full-time residents.

There are about 75-100 residences on Bells Island, but no grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants or other amenities. (This is not a huge inconvenience considering that the center of Currituck is literally about 3-4 miles away.) Many of the properties are soundfront or Canalfront, with easy access to the Currituck Sound.

Bells Island Campground - enjoy all campground amenities complimentary when staying at the Shell Shack!
The big (and only) attraction on the island is the Bells Island campground. Located at the very southern tip of the island, the campground is a popular destination for Currituck County visitors who want to be close to the water in a secluded, and relatively quiet community.

Here's a quick overview of Bells Island Campground highlights, features and facts:

The campground is situated on approximately 22 acres of land that is adjacent to the Currituck Sound.
Bells Island is one of the oldest campgrounds in Currituck County and first opened to visitors in 1963.
The campground is located 5 minutes away from the Knotts Island ferry, and is a 20 minute boat ride away from the beach community of Corolla. It's also a 45 minute drive away from the Outer Banks beaches.
Area restaurants within a 10-minute drive include the Pass the Salt Cafe, McDonalds, Currituck BBQ Company, and the roadside Morris Farm Market for fresh produce.
Bells Island Campground features 39 full hook-up RV sites, 24 RV sites with water and electricity, and a separated collection of 26 tent areas.
Campground amenities at Bells Island include a dump station, restrooms, and shower facilities for campers.
Community amenities include tennis courts, horseshoe pits, basketball and volleyball areas, and a boat ramp and fishing pier.
Popular activities in the campground include fishing, crabbing, boating, swimming, sailing, and jet skiing.
Pets are allowed but must be leased at all times.
