The Hideaway is a treat for the soul. Watch the dulker grazing and leaping through the grasslands. Enjoy the seclusion whilst safely tucked away inside a Security Estate. This old farm cottage remains true to its farm beginnings , intact with appealing features such as exposed beams, some exposed brickwork, stained cement floors and an amazing fireplace in the open plan living area . The braai area is positioned to maximize the beautiful sunset views over the natural grasslands.

The space
Positioned behind our charming brick shed in the shade of the trees, you will love the wide open views of the fields as well as our enormous garden spaces which feature in the annual Midlands Open Gardens calendar. The Cottage is a happy space which remains true to its farm beginnings with exposed beams and cement floors. It’s private and comfortable.

Guest access
Our guests are welcome to explore our 3.5 ha garden with its pool, veggie garden and forest spaces.

Other things to note
We have a few other cottages privately dotted around the garden. There is a chicken farm beyond the fields, you will hear the excitement at feeding time! On occasion, when the wind blows in a certain direction, you may hear the sound of distant traffic.

Location

Howick, South Africa

River Goose Estate was once just a small section of a huge farm that belonged to my great, great grandparents. They were amongst the first settlers to explore the Interior and they soon realized that this portion of the farm was ideal for grazing their cattle on the exceptionally nutritious grasslands., hence this section of the farm became known as the Hayfields. The cattle drank water from the Umgeni river, upstream from the famous Howick Falls. The area is registered in the Deeds Office as the Farm Allemans Drift. In the early days of Natal, many travelers headed North in the hope of finding gold. They passed through Allemans Drift and were glad to find lodgings on our farm.
Guests often remark on how central we are to so much of what is on offer in the Midlands. You might like to google Midlands Meander to read about all the experiences to be found in this area. My favorites spots close by include the Karkloof market and the Old Mushroom Farm for Sat mornings, Umgeni Valley and Midmar for gentle weekend walks, Yard 41 for creative inspiration, Piggly Wiggly for the Park Run and family time, The Treatery or the Barn Owl for vibey coffee moments. Try Blueberry Hill, Terbadore, Caversham Mill or Crystal Barn for a leisurely Sunday lunch. 89 on Copper, Ill Postino and Artisan make for fabulous Saturday evenings. Further afield, day trips to Highmoor or Cobham in the Berg are breathtaking in their beauty. A day at Umghlanga beach is also a great option. And I haven’t even mentioned the Karkloof Canopy Tour, Lions River paddling trips or the numerous trail runs and mountain bike events! We are as central as it gets with popular tourist destinations such as the Nelson Mandela Capture Site and the magnificent thundering Howick Falls just around the corner!
