Smens offers tailored experience stays focusing on outdoor persuits, organic food and relaxation. The retreat is located in a traditional Swedish countryside village, in the heart of nature, yet only 1hr 45min north of Stockholm. The house easily sleeps 10 people in 4 beautiful and large double bedrooms. The budings originate from the late 1800s and seamlessly blend original fetures with all modern appliances, as well as an outdoor wood burning hot tub with fantastic views. Welcome to Smens.

The space
The farm, as we call it, is at the outskirts of the small traditional village, Fornby. It consists of two houses, lots of different garden spaces and a farmbuilding with fields where our horses roam. The space has several sitting areas, a large kitchen diner, office/single bedroom and a further 4 generously sized(!) double bedrooms. The countryside is at the doorstep, with the forest directly north and fields with dirt tracks directly south. The farm was built in the late 1800's and while part of the main house was renovated in the 80's we are carefully bringing it back to its former glory. The bedrooms are all freshly restored, as well as the upstairs bathroom and kitchen. It is truly a magical place, even at family gatherings with 8 adults and several children the space still feels spacious thanks to the large lounges and quiet upstairs. For those less keen on stairs the third reception room downstairs doubles as a bedroom and the downstairs bathroom with shower and toilet is fully functional. We love to host children and have everything from toys, cots and highchairs- just ask. We even have a double cycle/ski buggy that can be pre booked for those wishing to explore the amazing outdoors activities!

Guest access
All of our guests are welcome to full access of our entire house and grounds. This includes the wood fired hot tub located at the end of the garden toward the horse paddock paradise.

Other things to note
Forget WiFi and television. Put down your phone. Let yourself unplug and remember back to your childhood exploring the great outdoors and listening to the sounds of nature, reading a book or playing board games with your family.

Give yourselves time to cook a big family meal (better yet let us cook it for you) and sit in the garden as the horses gallop round and the deer cross the valley. There is no time like family time.

This isnt your regular AirBnB. We want to make you feel special and give you the greatest possible experience and that is why we offer our services (for free) to answer your every question, arrange your activities, your meals AND plan your relaxation.

During your summer stay we offer the following as extras to ensure you have a great stay:

- Breakfast, lunch & dinner (in any order or preference you can think of)
- Midsummers at Smens - celebrate midsummers in the home county of this Swedish tradition
- Yoga classes in the old barn or underneath the birch trees
- Horse riding in the forest on our own beautiful horse
- Bicycle hire (baby buggy bike attachment "Thule" is free for wee ones 3 and under)
- Canoeing on unspoilt waterways
- Nordic Game Viewing (deer, elk, wild boar and birds of prey)
- Dining in the forest - we cook up a feast on produce from the forest and serve it underneath the trees by candlelight
- Crayfish parties underneath the midnight sun

Location

Horndal, Dalarna, Sweden

The small village of Fornby consists of about 30 houses, or thereabouts, and every single one retains its original charm and quintessential Swedish features. We sit right at the outskirts of the village, and love going for a morning walk around the fields and through the hamlet of buildings.

We have the forest and fields on our doorstep and other than the opportunities this presents to the active and sport minded, it also means fresh seasonal produce on tap: blueberries, cranberries, wild strawberries, raspberries, chanterelles (and other mushrooms, we can even arrange a foraging guide). There is an abundance of rhubarb, cherries and apples in the garden, help yourself and make a crumble. Or we will make one for you.

1 km away there is a small downhill ski centre with 2-3 runs and a cross country ski track. It may be small, but it is community run and hosts a really amazing program during February mid terms, with bbq’s, lantern lit evening runs, competitions and lots of fun for all children and young things from 3 and above. And for us adults of course!

The area is known for its mountain/road biking, canoeing, cross country skiing, fishing and hiking. There are many beautiful nature reserves, but the nature on our doorstep is just as beautiful and a lot more secluded, after all, few people take to nature to be among the crowds. We like to provide little maps on the best walks and rides around the farm, including picnic spots.

Within bicycle/walking distance/a short drive we have lakes where you can swim in the summer, bbq and fish all year round and go ice fishing or ice skating in winter.

Respectful restoration of old buildings is a big wave in Europe and beyond and two of Sweden’s most famous restoration shops selling all sorts of goods from traditional paint and windows to sheep skins and hand soap are only a 35 minute drive away.

During your stay
We are very passionate about travel and about everything the local region has to offer. Let us know if you want help organising any of your food requirements including: food hampers, cooked meals, crayfish parties, breakfast, picnics etc. We are also sport and outdoor enthusiasts and can help with anything sports and adventure related including: mountain biking, marking out hiking trails, boat trips, canoeing, fishing, horse riding, cross country skiing, down hill skiing, wild camping, game viewing, triathlon training, road biking etc etc!! Our two horses roam around the farm and one of the horses is available to rent for forest hacks or why not some dressage riding in the fields. Our two small boys are actively petitioning for a pony so that may soon materialise too!! We also organise horse/bike/hike trails with picnic lunches on request.

If we are around we can offer taxi service to and from train station and any local events.

Basically, if you have any requirements and ideas then let us know and we will try and make them happen!
