About this listing

Our recently-built home has amazing views of the laguna and mountains. Patio opens right up to the canal, where you can take our canoes for a meander to the lakes. Lots of deck space and open floor plan. Friendly neighbors on local street.

The space

The house is designed to inspire and help you relax in a natural setting. Our home is situated in the safe, local community of Calle 6 just off Callejon de la Loma. It takes only 15 minutes to walk to Cabarete beach. The lagoon in front of the home is designated as a National Park. We have a canoe that is available to you for use. Moto-taxi is also a very popular way to get around the area. It costs a $1 to get to any part of Cabarete.

My husband and I are both doing non-profit work in Haiti and the house is our place to recharge and rest. We have an 3 year old daughter, so we look forward to spending quality family time here when we can. We feel very happy and safe in this neighborhood. We would love to live here full time, but unfortunately our work is keeping us away. Until we can spend more time in Cabarete, we decided to share our home with others who would love to experience living in a real Dominican neighborhood while enjoying the beauty of the region.

Our personal assistant Genesis lives close by and she will make sure that you feel welcome and have everything you might need. If you are looking for an inspiring and restful space that is peaceful yet is a part of the local community you will enjoy staying here.

Most of our personal belongings have been stowed away, but you will find everything you need in terms of kitchen and bath supplies and of course freshly made beds ready for your arrival. The farmer that we use when we are in Cabarete usually comes to the house with a full truckload of fresh fruits and vegetables every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11 am. If you wish to use his convenient services please let us know and we will let him know to include you on his route. His produce is always fresh and it comes at great prices.

This is a three story dwelling sleeping 6 maximum. It is best suited for families or two couples (three maximum) as there are no traditional bedrooms - the main level has a comfortable couch that folds out and sleeps 2 and a small full bathroom, upstairs is the master bedroom & bathroom (no doors provided, only a wooden screen) and on the third level there is a loft with a queen bed. The house is child friendly. We have a small children library/playroom downstairs.

Guest access

You will be able to take full advantage of the entire, spacious home and the following:
2 canoes
Shared pool & patio
Bicycles

Interaction with guests

We commute back and forth between Haiti & Dominican Republic. While we are in Haiti, we open our home up for rental. We are currently a family of 3...our little baby girl was born in Sosua, Dominican Republic.

Genesis, our trusted friend and helper, will be at our home to greet you when you arrive and answer any questions you might have. She speaks only Spanish but if you have specific questions you can ask me and I will make sure to answer and coordinate as necessary with her. Genesis can also provide baby sitting upon request if needed. She has been caring for our daughter when we are in Cabarete, and she is responsible and very loving.

Other things to note

This is a great house for families to enjoy time together. If you have children, we can make available to you some baby items (pack n play, beach stroller, high chair, toys/books). Usually these items are stored away, but if we know that children are coming, we will prepare them.

Plenty of open space for yoga, pilates, art, meditation. The second floor also opens out onto a deck. We love sleeping outside on the deck and gazing up at the stars.

The local kids love to swim in the lagoon in front of the house, so there is usually noise and laughter of children at play during the afternoon's hot hours.

Even though the local electricity supply varies daily, we have batteries/inverter-charger that take care of lighting and outlets at all hours of the day. You will always have electricity for lights (and laptops, cell chargers, etc) , but when the local electricity is off, our inverter-charger/batteries do not charge the hot-water or fridge/freezer. So, there is no hot water and the fridge during those hours. However, the fridge keeps cool and the freezer stays frozen for a while. The local electricity has a very regular schedule, and is usually not off for more than 6 hours. Our family has not had a problem ever with spoiled food, and we love to cook and keep the fridge stocked!

There is a washing machine for your use with the help of Genesis.

The pool is always full. It is 4-5 feet deep, and it is perfect for cooling off in the hot time of the day. The patio and pool are shared with our other apartments.

We had a great time at Sara's place. Great view from the balcony, beautiful and spacious living room, nice kitchen, and friendly neighbors. Sara's assistants were very helpful but since we didn't speak any Spanish it was a bit hard to communicate. Sara responded within couple of hours if we needed anything, which was super nice! Of note, the pool in the picture was unavailable, instead there was a communal pool shared with another house. Also, you're better off with a car to access the house from different parts of town and nearby beaches/cities. In overall, this was great value and I would highly recommend Sara's cozy sanctuary to anyone visiting DR.

We had very nice time in the beautiful and huge house of Sara and Demeter. The house is new, very good furnitured with beautiful view above river and mountains. We were warm welcomed by Genesis and Demeter. Demeter gave us nice tips for the restaurants and other activities, also he made sure that we felt us comfortable in the house and stopped noisy building activities during our stay. Sara and Demeter answered to our messages very quick and kindly. We would recommend the house and the hospitality of Sara and Demeter to every guest.

Staying at Sara and Demeter's house was an absolutely lovely and relaxing experience. When I arrived with my boyfriend and mother, Demeter was there waiting for us to show us around the house and give use the keys. Not only did he always make himself available for questions, but his trusted friend, Jean-Denis, would give us rides to town and to Las Cuevas. The house was very beautiful and clean, just as is depicted in the photos. It is located in a very humble, Dominican neighborhood right next to the beautiful laguna where you can use their canoes to explore the local caves. This was a very rich experience and if I return to Cabarete I will definitely book again with Sara and Demeter!!!

We absolutely loved our two months in Cabarete. Sarah was an amazing host. The home is exactly as beautiful as we hoped with amazing views and easy access to all that Cabarete has to offer. We loved that the home was situated in a great Dominican neighborhood, which allowed us to both explore Cabarete's tourist destinations, as well as experience quintessential Dominican life. We felt safe and our kids loved the pool and the chance to meet and play with neighbor kids. We couldn't give our experience and this home higher marks.

We were greeted at Sara and Dharma's lovely home by Genesis who provided all the information that we needed to begin our month stay. She left us with her contact number and checked on us regularly along with helping us with our laundry. The well-stocked house was even better than we had anticipated, complete with fans, cooling breezes through the screened windows, with a mosquito-netted comfortable bed. Extras, such as yoga mats, a 5 gallon water dispenser, canoes, bikes, and even some food. Anytime we had an question, large or small, their response was immediate and always helpful. It felt as if a family member was looking out for you. We enjoyed interacting with the friendly Dominican and Haitian closely-knit families in the neighborhood. Dharma even arranged a tour of his finca (farm) with Juan its supervisor. Three days a week there is a veggie truck that comes to the house. Good prices and freshly-picked food. We often walked to the beach to watch the kiteboarding and windsurfing, but our favorite activity was paddling the canoe to the two nearby lagoons, watching herons, egrets and coots inhabiting the marsh along with the sounds of the frogs serenading us at night. We would love to come back

The sanctuary was truly amazing! We immediately felt at peace there, and spent a lot of time on the front terrace, just looking out over the river and the mountains. The house was modern and exclusive, and gave a feeling of well-being and relaxation. We enjoyed paddling through the river with the canoe. Genesis, who helped us, was very kind. In sum, an amazing place to stay that we highly recommend to others!

My husband, Demeter, and I are avid travellers, yogis and creative spirits. We have a daughter, Kalina, who is now 2 years old. We spend our time between Haiti where we work in a non-profit organization & Dominican Republic. We are passionate about social justice issues, progressive education, yoga, design and art. We love this island and would love to share our home with you! We will be happy to provide you with tips to make your stay the best possible.

Demeter is from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and I'm from Philadelphia, US. Our daughter was born in Dominican Republic, but we hope that she grows up learning Spanish, Haitian Creole, French, English & Bulgarian.
