Whare Kohuroa ( also known as, ‘the wee hoose’ ) is a secret hideaway nestled amongst native trees filled with birdsong, it's a stone's throw from the Kohuroa stream.
As the name suggests, the ‘wee hoose’ is a separate small hut or ‘bothie’ by my home, that is a self-contained Bedroom with en-suite Bathroom.
Tea and coffee making are provided. *NB - Breakfast can be arranged on request at additional cost.

Where you’ll be

Leigh, Auckland, New Zealand

Matheson Bay is located between Matakana and Leigh on the beautiful Eastern Coastline, about one and a half hours drive North of Auckland.
There is a private path adjoining a walkway that meanders along the Kohuroa stream, reserve, waterfall and swimming hole, about 500 metres walk to the iconic, pristine and safe swimming beach at Matheson Bay.
A settlement of historical and geological significance, ‘Mathies’ or ‘the Bay’ as it is known locally, is only a couple of minutes drive to Leigh village with its famous Sawmill Café / Bar / Music gig venue. Local Café + Fish&Chips at Leigh Eats, the Leigh Pub and of course the corner Dairy and Gas Station, as well as a unique local Perfumery.
There are many activities and interests to be pursued close-by.
Alongside the beach and bush walks, there is fishing at Leigh Wharf, Goat Island Marine Reserve - kayaking, diving, snorkelling and the glass bottom boat.
For those seeking a less active, more relaxing time, there are wonderful vineyards to visit in the area.
Ten minutes away in Matakana Village, there is a state of the art Cinema and the famous Saturday Farmer’s and bric a brac markets. The Village has a variety of shops, boutiques, galleries, café’s and restaurants. There are breweries nearby and a variety of Art and Craft practitioners in the area who offer open studios and workshops. The world class Vivian Gallery is also nearby.
…and if you simply want to relax and have a quiet retreat away from the city, it is the perfect spot. There truly is something for everyone.

I am an artist / designer, with a specialisation in glass - from glassblowing to larger architectural projects. Growing up in Scotland, I then travelled and worked my way around the world , spending several years living in Japan and Australia to name a couple of places ,finally setting in New Zealand where I have lived in Auckland with my family for over 20 years. I have recently relocated to the beautiful beach community of Matheson Bay / Leigh, where coastal bush walks and swimming in the Bay are now part of my every day life. I have my glass studio alongside a local pottery in Matakana where there is much to do and see. Alongside my creative work, I love reading and cooking and gathering with friends and family to share a glass of local wine. Watching movies at the spectacular cinema in Matakana and quiz night at the pub. . It’s a great place to be.
